and Horace was surprised at all the new shops and even a bakery and a mercantile. It was not the same place he remembered. The village had become a small town. It made him sad in a way because the place he remembered now only lived in his memory. Late that afternoon, they walked back to the house and he could smell his mother’s gingerbread from half a mile away. That made him feel better, that was still the same.
When they arrived at the house, Aunt Matt and Bob were sitting on the ground out by the barn. She was trying to teach him how to play cards and was not having much luck. Bob looked at Horace and said, “She cheats.” Aunt Matt rolled her eyes and said, “Right. You would if you knew how, dummy.” Horace laughed and walked over to Guiensenbach and rubbed her neck. She had plenty of hay and a nice warm barn so she was fine. He went on in the house and had coffee with his mother and father, They had a nice supper and talked about all the places and things he had seen on his travels. He told them about the girl with the long black hair and how she danced. Horace still wondered if she ever thought of him.
The next few weeks came and went and then one day Horace asked Aunt Matt and Bob if they would like to go fishing. They packed a lunch, Horace fixed three fishing poles and they set out for the pond where Aunt Matt and Horace first met. It was an early autumn day and the sun was shining brightly. They sat on the grass at the edge of the pond and just looked at the water for a while. After a bit Horace said, “Aunt Matt, I need to talk to you about something that’s bothering me.” “Sure”, she said. “What’s the matter?“
Horace was silent for a moment and said, “We’ve traveled thousands of miles together exploring to the West and I liked being an adventurer. I enjoyed meeting new friends like Evangeline, Abbasonn and Blanco, and I liked learning how to ride a unicycle, how to navigate by the stars. Please understand that I love my father and I would never do anything to hurt or offend him, but I am not sure I want to work in a broom factory, at least not right now.”
Aunt Matt smiled and said, “Do you remember what Abbasonn told you about destiny and karma? Each of us have our own destiny to fulfill.” Horace said, “What does that mean?” She said, “What that means is, what will be, will be, and we are just along for the ride.” Horace was silent for a few minutes and then said, “Aunt Matt, have you ever wondered what lies to the East of here?”
