Afana looked at the mutated man. It sickened him to know that he looked like that.
An advisor walked into the lab where Afana and Advisor Robert were working. “Afana, it appears there has been an outbreak on Level Four.”
Afana quickly left the lab. “Where?” Afana asked, and the advisor pointed through the glass floor to show him.
Bodies were piling up by the exit of Level Four, where a group of men were fighting. Afana stared down, trying to get a better look to see if they were infected. Fights often broke out in the bunkers, but Afana usually left the men to deal with it. If a general were there, he’d break it up sometimes.
Afana looked past the men on Level Four to Level Five, where there was another fight. Their movements weren’t normal. Men were leaping for one another, taking bites. The disease was loose on Level Five.
“Send the generals down to clean up Level Five,” Afana ordered.
The infected on Level Five kept pounding on the floor, trying to get to Terrier and the others on Level Six.
Natalie ran over to Samantha. She’d been sneaking peeks through the door to see if they’d found the girls, and to her relief, they’d found one.
Shane winked at her. “Hey, Natalie. Looking fine as always.”
Terrier swung at Shane, hitting him on the jaw for his comment and as belated revenge for the attempted attack on Natalie. Shane stumbled and lost his grip on his machete. It slammed to the floor, and Peter picked up the machete before Shane could.
“I don’t need the weapon against you anyway,” Shane sneered. He wiped the blood from his face, revealing an evil smile. “When I’m done with you, I’m going after Natalie.” Shane ran at Terrier, hitting him head-first in the guts and briefly knocking the wind out of him. Terrier had fought in worse states than this, though, and he wouldn’t let Shane win.
The two went at it like wild animals that had spent their lives hating one another, because that’s what they were. They traded punches as the others watched. There was no way they were getting in the middle of those, either of whom could have ripped anyone else there in two.
“This is not happening on my Level!” Mama Lou snapped. She had her hands on her hips and was shaking her head. “This place is screwed up enough. We don’t need this! Shane, get off him! Terrier, get off him!” she ordered, but neither of them listened. “Natalie, take Samantha to the kids’ room.”
She looked at the other men, who weren’t helping. “Martin or Murray, your gun please,” Mama Lou asked, holding her hand out in front of her. Martin had spent his adult life on Level Six, and he knew that Mama Lou ruled it. Martin looked at Peter, who stood by her side and towered over him.
Then Martin looked at his dad, who nodded. Martin handed her the gun.
“What are you doing? She’s a woman!” George shrilled.
“She’s more of a man than you’ll ever be,” Peter told George.
Mama Lou fired above Terrier’s and Shane’s heads, and they both froze like she’d shot them. “Get up, now,” she ordered through gritted teeth.
The two got to their feet, pushing each other one last time.
“You two can sort your shit out once lockdown has been lifted. Do you understand?” Mama Lou pointed the gun at Shane. “You have some nerve coming down here after you assaulted Natalie! She is pregnant. How sick are you?” she asked Shane.
His eyes bulged, but Mama Lou didn’t even blink.
“Sick?” Shane repeated.
“Yes, sick. And weak,” Mama Lou responded, stepping closer to Shane. “I will have none of that down here. If you try anything else, I will kill you myself.”
Shane laughed.
Wrong answer.
Peter punched him in the face and Terrier punched him in the gut at the same time. Shane doubled over in pain.
Mama Lou held up the gun. “Martin, I’m going to keep this for a while,” “Okay,” Martin agreed reluctantly.
“Martin, get your gun back,” George demanded, but Martin shook off his request. George turned to Mama Lou. “I’m the highest-ranking person here, and you will give Martin his gun back!”
No one paid attention to George.
“Do you know who I am? I’m Advisor George!” George yelled.
“You’re a little man who needs to learn a thing or two about respect,” Mama Lou told him imperiously.
George gaped and sputtered, “Did you hear her? Did you? I’m going to tell Afana on you.”
Mama Lou smiled at George. “Peter, Terrier, our guest would like to leave. Please open the door for him.”
The men headed toward the door, and Peter pulled out the wrench.
“What’s the code?” Mama Lou asked General Murray. He rolled off the list of numbers and Terrier typed them in, and from the look on George’s face they were correct. Numbers they needed to remember.
“Don’t open the door,” George pleaded. Terrier let his hand hover over the keypad.
“I’m the boss down here. You understand, little man?” Mama Lou demanded.
George didn’t respond.
“Answer the lady’s question!” Peter snapped.
“I understand,” George conceded.
Mama Lou pointed her finger and pulled it back to herself, the international sign for “Get over here! Kari is still missing, so pull yourselves together. We need to find her.”
There were a few screams behind them as they headed out, and the gang turned back to see Vicky hitting the Mad with a shovel. They bounced off one another like bowling pins.
“I can’t believe you talked her into it,” Ryder marveled. “What did she want Massimo to give her?”
Carter had a mischievous grin on his face.
“Carter, what did you promise?” Leandro pushed.
“I wouldn’t say what, I’d say who. I offered you, Fluffy.” Carter cracked up.
“What?” Ryder laughed.
Everyone was laughing except Leandro. He shot Ryder a look.
She tried to hold in her laughter. “Sorry, but it’s funny!” Ryder was happy that the tension from earlier was broken.
“I don’t think
