you’re going to stay alive down here, you’ll have to follow these rules: Stay away from the women. Stay out of the women’s sleeping areas. Stay out of the children’s room. You can sleep down Tunnel Three. Is everyone clear?”

“Crystal,” Shane smarmed.

Mama Lou, Peter, and Terrier checked the rooms and the tunnels. A few of the pole-wielding women joined them to make sure there hadn’t been an outbreak and that there weren’t any more jerks trying to attack anyone.

If there had been, they’d be more scared of the women than him, Terrier thought to himself. He was glad he was on the same side as them.

Murray, Martin, Shane, and George gathered in the main area of Level Six. George looked around and headed toward one of the tunnels.

“Where are you going?” General Murray asked.

George looked at Murray like he was stupid. “To fix the camera. Some of us value our jobs and stopping the madness from spreading!”

“What is it with him?” Shane asked Martin. “Damn, you look like shit,” he added as he moved away from Martin.

Martin’s skin had turned grey-white, and he looked like he was about to throw up. Sweat poured down his face. “Is George stressing you out?”

Martin nodded weakly. “Yes.”.

“Martin, are you all right?” his dad asked. He really did look terrible.

“Yeah. Don’t worry about me, I’m just hot. Isn’t it hot down here?” Martin asked.

The general felt his son’s head, which was weird since he was a grown man, but he didn’t care. Martin wasn’t hot, he was actually the opposite. He was as cold as ice.

“Are you coming or not? Sooner we get those cameras fixed, the quicker we can get out of here,” George pressed. He was right, and hopefully, he’d be able to get help for his son.

“Can you walk?” Murray asked Martin, since he was leaning on the stair rail to hold himself up.

“Yes.”

“Shane, are you coming?” Murray asked. He might need his help.

Shane looked around. Some of the women were still looking at him like they wanted to kill him. He pretended he wasn’t a bit scared and blew them a kiss. “Sure, why not?”

The men headed down the tunnel, and George got to work.

“Will you hurry the fuck up?” Shane bitched. He was holding George up to the camera because there wasn’t anything for him to stand on.

Martin sat down on the floor and rested his head on his knees. He wasn’t doing very well at all.

“If you keep still, I can hurry the fuck up,’ as you so eloquently put it,” George told Shane. It didn’t matter how big or small you were George would treat you like a jerk.

Shane leaned left and then right as if he were going to drop him. “Shane!” he snapped, but Shane just laughed in response. His laughter stopped when he saw glowing red eyes at the end of the tunnel.

“Get off me! Get off me!” he yelled, and flung George to the floor.

“Jesus, Shane. Was there any need for that?” Murray asked as he went to George’s aid.

Shane pointed down the tunnel. “Can you see them? Tell me you can see them!”

“See what?” The general couldn’t see anything.

Shane squeezed his eyes together, and the glowing red eyes were gone. “Fuck this shit,” Shane swore, walking away.

“What did you see?” Murray yelled after him. He looked back down the tunnel but still saw nothing there. Whatever Shane had seen had made him turn as white as Martin.

“We need to get the fuck out of here.”

“General Murray?” George squeaked. “It’s Martin!”

General Murray turned to face his son, whose eyes were glowing red. No! Not Martin. Murray’s heart broke in two when he saw his son’s face.

“We’ve got to get help,” George yelled as he ran down the tunnel toward the center of Level Six. “Martin is infected, Martin is infected,” he screamed.

“He’s not infected, he’s still my son,” the general yelled after the advisor.

When Martin rose awkwardly to his feet, Murray spotted a bite wound on his arm. One of the Mad had bitten him when he went back for George.

George was the one who should have been bitten, not Martin! Not my son. General Murray stepped away from his son and reached for his gun, but it wasn’t there. Emotions flooded him. He’d panicked, and then was glad. He didn’t want to die at the hands of his son, and he also didn’t want to have to shoot him.

General Murray kept moving away from Martin. Awkwardly turning his head, Martin stared at his dad for a moment, then his eyes locked on him.

General Murray backed away swiftly. “No Martin. Please,” he begged, but it did no good. His son ran toward him, and Murray was forced to sprint out of his reach.

Angry screams came from the end of the tunnel by the exit to the main section from the women with the poles. They’d come for his son.

General Murray held back his emotions as the women approached him, ready to attack. They looked at him, then ran past him toward Martin.

He had no choice but to walk away, a broken man.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

The gang got to Byrant the Gunslinger’s house. Leandro had told the gang that he was the best shooter he’d ever seen, and others in the group agreed. Carter, on the other hand, disagreed, because they’d not seen Carter shoot.

As always, Carter was acting like a dick.

“Here’s your chance, Carter,” Leandro teased as they saw Byrant at the side of his house target-shooting. Leandro winked at Carter.

“Have you got something in your eye, or are you trying to hit on me?” Carter grinned as he bent down and picked up a branch from the ground. He threw it into the sky, and it landed with a thud. “Fetch, Fluffy.” Carter laughed.

Dick move. Leandro was in Carter’s face before anyone had realized the shit that was about to go down. “Stop calling me Fluffy, you…you prick!” Leandro was flushed. He looked like he’d not had many arguments before.

“But that’s your name,
