She didn't want either of them pushing Moto. He would need time. She would need time.

"I will try." He promised.

"How long will Moto take to wake after you release him from whatever you did?" She asked as she walked to the table.

"Not long." He followed her. Once at the table, he waved his hand, and the food disappeared.

"Hey," she turned on him.

He smiled, "I sent the food to the table in the cave. You wanted to take some to Moto, didn't you?"

She smiled, "yes." She nodded in his direction. "Thank you."

He gave her a half bow. "Let's see about waking Moto."

She started up the path. He followed in silence. On the way back to the cave, she put thoughts of her conversation with Shimani out of her mind. She built a shield in her mind as best she could, not that she knew what she was doing. She just imagined a wall in her mind and imagined placing the conversation behind it. She didn't want Moto to catch even a glimpse of what she learned, not about herself or about her memories or about her intentions, none of it. Once in the cave she knelt beside Moto and nodded towards Shimani. He placed his hand on Moto's forehead. She watched as he closed his eyes and a look of concentration took hold in his facial features. She felt power surround them, and then before she knew it, the power was gone and Shimani stood at the entrance. She shook her head and blinked; her attention focused on Shimani.

He inclined his head towards her. "Be well, Kaily." Before she could answer he disappeared.

Her attention was drawn to Moto as he took a deep breath and exhaled. "Good afternoon, sleepy head."

Moto sat up. "Afternoon? Are you kidding me?"

She laughed and shook her head. "Afraid not."

"Why didn't you wake me?"

She looked to the back of the cave and back to Moto. "I don't know what happened back there, but I figured the least I could do was let you sleep for as long as you could." She kept the knowledge behind her shield that letting him rest had nothing to do with what happened to cause the partial collapse of the cave and destruction to the training room.

Moto glanced to the back of the cave at the destruction, and then back at Kaily.

Her heart caught in her throat seeing the pain reflected in his eyes. She climbed onto his lap and caressed the side of his cheek. "I don't want to know, Moto. Today, I want to forget about everything, my night terrors, whatever happened back there," she waved a dismissive hand in the direction of the destruction. "I want to forget about everything. Today, I want to swim and make love to you as much as possible or as many times as you are capable of loving me."

He pressed her back against the pallet and covered his body with hers. "Is that a challenge I hear, little one."

She shrugged. "Is it?"

"Sounds like one." He undid the buttons on her jeans. "You have far too many clothes on for me to make good on the challenge you have issued."

She laughed and wiggled to help him remove her offending jeans. She sat up at his urging and helped him remove her sweater. "If you need strength, there's food over there," she pointed to the table.

Later, Moto replied as he claimed her mouth. Exactly how many times are you challenging me to, little one?

She smiled against his mouth. All...day...long, she replied stretching and emphasizing each word. How many would that be?

Challenge accepted.

That was the last coherent thought she allowed herself for the remainder of the day and a good portion of the night too. She gave herself over to Moto in a way she had not yet done. She knew that tomorrow she would break his heart, and hers. Today she would take every experience she could have in such a short period of time. She would savor each moment, each caress, each kiss, every movement and nuance of Moto. She would savor it all. She knew it would have to last her a lifetime, for there would never be anyone else for her. Moto was her one and only true love, and always would be.

My Path to creating

Inhabitants at the Center of the Universe Series

I first “penned” this story in 2001. It started out with a single question I wanted to answer and tried to discover in the telling of the story that came to me at the time. Over the years I fell into the trap of write, rewrite, write, rewrite, etc. I sent out the various versions to publishers/agents in the traditional publishing world. The responses grew better over time, but still no one stepped forward to invest in an upcoming author.

To be honest, I had difficulties getting the story that lived inside me to the pages in front of me. There was always something missing. I could see and feel the characters, the story and the direction that I was being drawn towards, but I couldn’t quite get it out. The story stopped at a place that I couldn’t see past. It didn’t feel like the ending, but no matter
