âLast chance,â he told the old man. âAnything else I need to do?â
âJust one: Wake up!â Odin shouted at him and dug his fingers into Gunnarâs eye. He raised his bloodstained hand to the sky, and the eyeball heâd plucked out of the bodyguardâs head transformed into a blazing spear. The old man hurled the gory weapon down the Vegas Strip. âĂĂ°inn ĂĄ yĂ°r alla!â
The echoes of the words rebounded from the faces of the Stripâs casinos, and Gunnar heard the translation ringing in his thoughts.
Odin owns you all!
Chapter 5
A ROARING CRASH OF thunder and an icy blast of wind jolted Gunnar awake. He sat straight up in bed and flung the covers off his legs before he heard a surprised squawk and realized he wasnât alone in the bedroom. He ripped open the nightstand drawer, looking for the pistol he knew should be there. It wasnât, and his pulse raced as he tried to put together the pieces of the puzzle. It was hard to think past the ache in his right eye. It felt like someone had poured a cup of hot coffee right into the socket.
âEasy, tiger,â Ray said from beneath the blanket heâd tossed over her head. She clawed her way out of the bedclothes and sat up next to him. âGood afternoon, sunshine. Sleep well?â
Gunnar blinked to brush the sleep away and pressed the balls of his hands into his eyes until he saw stars. Heâd expected to feel like hammered shit when he woke up, but the aches and pains had abandoned his arms and legs, and he didnât have any trouble breathing. His eye still hurt, but even that pain had faded from blinding agony to annoying ache. âShit,â he said, âitâs already afternoon?â
âAfraid so.â Ray drew a line down the center of his naked chest with one manicured nail. âMimi freaked out when you wouldnât wake up, even after she buzzed an alarm that shook Bridget and me out of bed. We both felt okay, and Mimi didnât see us freaking out on the cameras, so she unlocked our doors.â
âShe was supposed to wake me up first,â Gunnar said.
âWhy?â Ray asked. âBecause youâre the only one who gets to make decisions about what we do?â
Gunnar propped himself up on his elbows. âIf something happened during the nightââ
âLike if Bridget or I got sick?â Ray crossed her arms and scowled at Gunnar. âI know more about this virus than you do. I couldââ
âOkay, okay,â the bodyguard groaned. âIâm sorry. Youâre right.â
The anger in Rayâs eyes didnât completely die, but Gunnar was relieved to see it had at least dimmed. Theyâd need a serious talk about their shared past before sheâd bury the hatchet for good.
Maybe theyâd have that chat after they returned to civilization.
âYou better be sorry,â Ray said with a faint smile. âAnd she did try to drag your sorry butt out of bed, but you wouldnât budge. Not even when she sounded the alarm. Thatâs why she sent me in.â
âGreat,â Gunnar groaned. âWhat time is it?â
Ray pointed at the old-school alarm clock on the nightstand next to Gunnar. âThat thing says itâs two oâclock. We missed lunch, and Iâm so hungry I could eat you. And there have been a few changes.â
Gunnar didnât like the sound of that. He propped himself up on one elbow and took a long look into Rayâs eyes.
There was a black dot in the middle of her forehead.
No, not a dot.
A hole.
Ray brushed her fingertips across the new addition to her features and shrugged. âIt doesnât hurt. Didnât even know it was there until Bridget pointed it out.â
âWhat is that?â Gunnar asked.
âMagic,â Ray said. âI had a really messed-up dream last night.â
She grinned and slipped the tip of her index finger into her forehead. It vanished up to the first knuckle before she pulled it back out.
âGross,â the bodyguard groaned. âPlease donât do that again.â
âWhatâs wrong?â Ray asked, feigning innocence. âYou donât like it when I put things in my hole?â
âDo it if it feels good, I guess. Maybe Iâll take a stab at it later.â Gunnar grinned and rested his hand on her hip. His smile faltered a bit as the implications sank in. âI had a dream, too. Which I guess wasnât really a dream at all.â
âYouâve got that right,â she said, her voice soft. âBridget and Mimi and I were all visited by the same hot blond chick. She made us pick whether we wanted to bat for the home team or the invaders. We all made the same decision. Now weâve got völva superpowers.â
âI always thought your vulva was pretty super,â Gunnar said, his hand sliding toward the inside of her hip.
âNo, völva.â Ray sat up straight and threw her shoulders back. âIt means Iâm a special Viking witch.â
âDid the hole in your head tell you that?â Gunnar asked.
âGoogle it,â she said. âMaybe youâll learn something.â
âHard pass,â Gunnar said. âIâd never hear the end of it if Mimi caught me using her swanky underground wi-fi to google âvölva.â
âFunny guy,â Ray said, her voice smoky. âBetter watch it, or Iâll turn you into a toad. The good news is that I think the worst of the Valhalla Virus should be over.â
Gunnar scooped Ray up in one arm and rolled her over onto his chest. He went in for a kiss, then froze with their lips an inch apart. âAre we still contagious?â
âI donât think so,â Ray said. The last angry sparks in her eyes were replaced by the smoldering fires of lust. âWhatever was gonna happen already happened. According to the research I stole, if youâre still alive when the fever breaks, then youâre out of the woods. Let me check your temperature.â
Her hand slid down Gunnarâs stomach, then lower. She cradled his balls, her fingers lightly squeezing. She kissed him, her mouth
