“You sure?” I glanced at her bloody breast. “Looks painful.”
“I promise you it looks worse than it feels. I’ll be fine. You rest, my king.”
“Suit yourself,” I said and closed my eyes. I was bone tired and my body was screaming for sleep. Less than a second later and I was nodding off.
Until a terrifying dragon head reared up, jaws wide and glowing with the coming fire of my demise.
—LEAVE ZALAXIA IMMEDIATELY OR DIE!—
I jolted awake with a restrained grunt.
No way I was sleeping now. If ever.
I stared straight ahead, pinning my eyes on the far compartment wall.
Theia said softly, “Permission to touch your Royal Person?”
“Huh?”
“May I hold your hand, my king?”
“Sure. I guess,” I sighed.
Theia wrapped her fingers around mine and squeezed gently without letting go. Then she leaned her head against my shoulder and let out a contented sigh.
I said, “Let me retract my power armor so you can lean against something softer.”
“I don’t mind this,” she said.
I retracted my armor ratcheting into my ring anyway, leaving me in my cloth uniform. “Better?” I asked.
“Much,” Theia said and relaxed her head against me. She closed her eyes and her face truly softened for the first time since I’d met her.
To my surprise, she was even more radiantly beautiful than I had ever realized.
Or I was falling in love with her.
Or both.
Too bad I’d never see her again after tomorrow.
—: Chapter 120 :—
An eerie witch-light limned the horizon.
It was too early to call it dawn, too dim, too dark, too gloomy.
Suited my mood.
The transports touched down on the outpost landing deck amid the crackle of plasma engines. The turbines whined down as the exit ramp whirred open and clunked on the deck. Inside the transport, every naked Shock Knight slowly unstrapped from their jump seats and stood up.
All that effort and injury, and I hadn’t found Violet.
What a fucking waste.
I sighed in quiet despair.
After everything that happened, I could say with confidence, we should have stayed home. Me in particular. It pained me to admit it, but as long as the safety of every woman at the outpost was my responsibility — it would be for at least another day, but not much longer than that — I had to weigh the needs of everyone against the needs of any given individual like Violet. It wasn’t fair to risk their lives for hers alone. It was a terrible choice to make, but someone had to make it.
That was leadership for you.
What a miserable night this had been. I had dodged a bullet. No, several. And not just the ones aimed at me. I had dodged 52 other bullets aimed at Theia, Syx, and the other Shock Knights. None of their lives would have been at risk if I hadn’t dragged them out looking for Violet, a woman who was either dead or didn’t need me looking after her.
Glancing around the transport, it seemed like every woman was half-covered in blood. Entirely my fault. At least they weren’t dead. That was my only consolation. Man, it had been very stupid and selfish of me to drag them out looking for Violet. I should have gone alone. Or not at all.
I heaved a disgusted sigh.
“We’re here,” Captain Theia said merrily, squeezing my hand one last time before unfastening her harness and standing. She sounded so merry, you’d think we’d just arrived at Disneyland after a long drive and now it was time to go frolicking through the happiest place on Earth, laughing all the way to Tomorrowland where we’d ride Space Mountain and Star Tours and eat cotton candy and popcorn until the park closed.
I just sat there, not looking at Theia’s beautiful nudity, instead dwelling alternately on my impending doom —LEAVE ZALAXIA IMMEDIATELY OR DIE!— or escaping to the safety of Earth where I’d never set foot in Tomorrowland or ride Space Mountain ever again. I’d done the real thing too many times already, and it wasn’t pretty. Those Disney Imagineers had no idea. No freaking idea.
“Are you sure something isn’t wrong, my king?” Theia asked. “You’ve been… very distant since we boarded the transport.”
“Huh? No.” I’d be even more distant once I got to Earth, or ended up dead in a ditch here on Zalaxia. Sighing, I stood up without looking at her.
Okay, I looked.
Even with her injuries, Theia’s body was flawless. Despite my dismal mood, it was impossible for me to not get aroused by her breasts, flat stomach, naked hips, thigh gap…
I tore my eyes away reluctantly.
Outside on the deck was a welcoming party led by Colonel Sadys. Behind her stood hundreds of guardswomen in power armor or tight-fitting V-cut uniforms. Their excited mutterings and the hopeful smiles on their gorgeous faces said they were ecstatic to see me.
I wished I could say the same, but I felt like an imposter. I wasn’t the hero they wanted. I felt like the loser they didn’t need and wouldn’t want if the knew the truth. But I had to admit, seeing a bunch of babes beaming at you did a lot for your self-esteem.
With a reluctant smile that was slightly forced, I walked down the ramp.
Only then did I realize that Captain Theia and the other Shock Knights had been waiting dutifully for me to go first. One thing about being in charge and having everyone defer to you at every turn: it quickly became something you took for granted. Just shy of five days here, and it was a given that my Shock Knights followed me everywhere I went. Never led. Always followed.
I stopped on the deck in front of Colonel Sadys.
“My king!” Sadys gasped after a brief bow. An ingratiating smile splashed across her face. “We’re so happy you made it back safely!” She wrung her hands together nervously and hopefully in front of her impressive V-cut cleavage. Her heaving breasts were straining inside the triangle formed by her red
