“In that case, we can start our training tomorrow,” said Youseg. “I will go over what I know about the power I exhibited in the hotel room earlier, the ability to latch onto objects and move them at will from a distance. I’m sure you’re curious. The industria seed we house here is quite strong, and it will unlock the power for you. It will, as always, be your responsibility to cycle it in a way that makes it useful. Considering what you’re going up against, it may be the difference between life and death. So we can do that. We can go over the strategy, you can relax some, knowing that you are safe here, and then you can go back to your country and do what it is you need to do. You are welcome to return here after,” Youseg told them. “You should consider this place home. After all, I built it for you.”
“Why would you do all this?” Yuri asked.
“Because I’m an old fool who trusts his visions, and the world is ready for a change. If the politics of your country can be modified to some degree, it will change the politics of mine, and it will eventually put us on a course to a better understanding with yours,” he told Soraya, “with Jokamatchi. I miss your country; I wish more of my countrymen were able to visit it and experience the culture. I also wish we could compile all the information we have on the ancients and various understandings of industria. Jokamatchi truly is a remarkable place. In any event, there is a way for all of this to work, and a way for it to go horribly wrong. Let’s try to avoid the latter.”
It was easy to fall asleep that night. Even with the turmoil Micah felt was creeping in from the corners all around him, he had a semblance of a plan, and the next day would bring more training, more strategizing, something else for him to focus on. Lying between Yuri and Bunni, Micah was awoken early in the morning by noise in the room Liza was staying in, which happened to be next door. He slowly got out of bed, leaving the ninjas to their sleep as he made his way to the door, Micah in a pair of sleep pants and nothing else.
After a soft knock, he let himself into Liza’s room to find the window open, the temperature of the room much colder than where he had just come from. There was a paint can open, and Liza stood in front of one of the walls, which was now wet with a light lavender color, the nun in her athletic gear, a splotch of light purple paint across her arm, and another across her stomach, her hair pulled back in two tight blonde ponytails.
Liza smiled at Micah as he approached.
“Already renovating?” he asked her.
“Once we handle whatever it is we handle in Neo-Hokkaido, it seems we will be staying here.”
“I can’t deny that.”
“I figured I would spruce up the room a little bit, at least this wall, which gets light from the skylight,” she said, nodding toward the high ceiling. Liza’s space was rather large, similar to Micah’s room, with its own private bathroom. There was a door connecting it to his room, which was currently shut, Micah realizing he could have simply made his way through the door had he wanted rather than circle around.
“Want some help?”
“I’m sort of finished,” she told him. “Can’t you tell?”
Micah examined the wall. Just to be playful, he went for one of the paintbrushes sticking out of the can and rather than slather it across the wall, he ran the brush down Liza’s arm.
“Oops…”
“Hey!” Liza retaliated by sending her brush across his chest, leaving a large lavender mark.
“I’m only trying to help out,” he told her as he streaked paint across her arm again, Micah moving closer to Liza, his eyes settling on her lips.
“I guess you’re right,” she said as she began to unzip the front of her training bra. “I could use a little help. And don’t worry, before you ask, this is the same kind of paint we use inside the monasteries back home. It’s non-toxic. And it washes off skin pretty easily.”
“Non-toxic, huh?” Micah smelled the paint, which wasn’t as strong as some of the paints they used back in his neighborhood in Thunderhama. “I wished it smelled better, something like grapes would be nice.”
“Is that right? Is it because it’s purple? Do all colors need to smell like the fruit they correspond to?” Liza asked as she revealed her breasts to him, her nipples slightly hard, likely due to the cool breeze moving into the room. “Well? Are you going to paint me?”
“Are we doing this?” Micah asked.
“Um, you’re the one that started it.”
You’ve got me dead to rights there, he thought as he placed the tip of his paintbrush against her left breast and then circle what was left of the paint around her nipple, Liza laughing quietly at the way it felt.
“Are you sure you can handle this?” Micah asked as he bent down to get more paint.
“Try me.”
He painted a lavender circle around her other nipple and then connected the two with a line, forming a peak that ran just past her clavicle.
“What are you working on there?” Liza asked as she tried to look down at it.
“That’s a good question, but like any artist, I prefer not to have to explain my work while I’m in the process of
