“I love the pulsating energy of the city,” he said, leaning forward, “but I also love the quiet and tranquility of Parry Sound.” His eyes probed hers. “Do you think you can handle being a country and a city girl? I want to make some new memories with you and Andy in Toronto.”
Ronnie swallowed a lump in her throat. She sensed that Red was referring to the time she and Andy had spent here in hospital. When they had passed over the downtown core, Ronnie had felt a momentary sadness, peering down at the cluster of hospitals that included SickKids. And then she was overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude for everyone there who had helped her little boy…like guardian angels.
“I think I can handle it,” she said breathlessly. Parry Sound was only a couple of hours away from Toronto.
“Good. No, great!” He squeezed her hands and brought them up to kiss them. “We’ll enjoy the best of both worlds…” He glanced at Andy, who was still scrunched up against the window.
Suddenly Red looked at Ronnie’s left hand and frowned.
“What’s the matter?” Ronnie stared down at her hand.
Without letting go of her hand, Red unbuckled his seat belt, slid off his seat and knelt on one knee. He reached in the back pocket of his jeans and pulled out a small black velvet box. “Something’s missing on your hand, that’s the matter…” he said huskily.
Ronnie’s heart stopped for a moment and then began pulsing at the sight of the large marquise-shaped diamond nestled inside. She blinked up at Red and back down at the platinum ring that he now held in his fingers.
“You are the jewel in my life, Ronnie.”
Her head snapped back up and she realized that Andy had turned to look at them with interest.
“This ring doesn’t compare in value to you, Ronnie,” he said, his eyes bright. “I offer it to you with my promise to love you and your little squirt over there for the rest of my days. To cherish our family, and to always be there for you both. And for any little carrottop or rabbit that might join us in the future… Veronica Forrester, will you—”
“Yes! I will, Red Brannigan II!” She took a deep breath as he slid the ring on her finger, and thought her heart would burst when Andy started clapping.
“I’ll take that as a sign of approval,” Red laughed, before kissing her soundly. He gazed at her hand. “I hope you like it.”
“It’s beautiful,” she told him. “I want to pick out a special ring for you, too, Red, but for now—” she shrugged and gave him a teasing smile “—all I can offer you is a plate of peanut butter cookies when we get back to the cottage.”
“Mmm… Deal!” He stood up and turned to Andy, raising his hand, and Ronnie’s heart swelled as the two loves of her life gave each other a high five.
