sheā€™d first married him, Lila always thought he was mostly just a well-groomed accessory to her lifeā€”the handsome and sweet onetime high school quarterback turned pro who adored her. She always thought of him more like a lap dogā€”cute and loyal and one hundred percent hers. But since heā€™d finally grown a backbone and left her, she realized she actually did care about him, which for Lila was like the brink of love.

She needed him.

And since heā€™d moved out, all she could think about was how to get him back.

For one thing, he was the only one who loved her as much as she loved herself, and that was saying a lot. Would anybody else ever be able to match Kenā€™s devotion? She seriously doubted it.

Sure, back in high school heā€™d dated both the Wakefield twins, but that was only fooling around. When he fell in love, he fell for her. Hard.

How else to explain that when she tried to divorce him three years ago, he simply refused to leave? Okay, maybe not refused, but he hung around until she gave up talking to the lawyers. And then there were the looks he sometimes gave her, the ones that told her she was the goal line and he was coming across it, no matter what. Nobody else made her feel so worthā€¦winning.

ā€œI donā€™t think Ken is gone for good,ā€ Jessica said. ā€œHe loves you.ā€

ā€œHe has a funny way of showing it,ā€ Lila said. Like not answering any of her e-mails or texts or a dozen voice mails. ā€œHeā€™s never ignored me for this long before.ā€

ā€œMaybe he needs a little more time to cool off,ā€ Jessica suggested.

Lila knew Ken was angry with her. Sheā€™d said some awful things about him for the True Housewives show, but none of them was real. It was all pretend. Just like Paris Hilton and all her reality shows. Didnā€™t she say she was just exaggerating everything for good ratings? Well, so was Lila.

ā€œMaybe if you quit the showā€¦ā€ Jessica suggested, even as her phone dinged again, drawing her attention.

ā€œQuit? What! Never!ā€ Lila couldnā€™t even conceive of the idea of quitting True Housewives of Sweet Valley. She was the showā€™s starring bitch and she happened to be good at it. Lila hadnā€™t done anything with her life so far except drop out of college, marry Ken, and spend her days dumping piles of money on Rodeo Drive. True Housewives was the closest that Lila had ever come to a lifeā€™s calling. She had great instincts for camera angles and drama, and her perfect little body looked fantastic on camera. If she gave that up, then who would she be? An NFL starā€™s wife. That was bad enough. Now she would be his ex-wife. You canā€™t be more nobody than that.

ā€œIā€™m just saying, maybe that would help soften things with Ken,ā€ Jessica said, her attention again on her phoneā€™s lighted screen.

ā€œAre you asking me to give something up?ā€ Lila asked. ā€œUm, excuse me, have we met?ā€ She threw open her arms, which were heavy with diamonds and platinum. ā€œWhen was the last time I had to cut back on anything?ā€

Jessica had to laugh. The thing about Lila was, she might be spoiled, but she was the first to admit it. You could say a lot of things about Lila, but that she was boring certainly wasnā€™t one of them, Jessica thought. ā€œSorry, I forgot.ā€

Lila pushed her dark hair from her forehead.

ā€œAnd anyway, Iā€™m not going to quit. Besides, thereā€™s a problem: the producers want him on next weekā€™s show.ā€

ā€œYou really think heā€™s going to do that?ā€ Jessicaā€™s phone dinged again, drawing her attention.

ā€œHe has to,ā€ Lila said. ā€œThey said get him on the show orā€¦else. I donā€™t know what the ā€˜elseā€™ is, and I donā€™t want to find out, either. If I could just get him to talk to me, just once, I know I could straighten this out.ā€

Jessica shook her head in sympathy and was about to speak when her phone vibrated again.

ā€œHe has to come on the show,ā€ Lila continued. Of course, technically, he hadnā€™t signed any sell-your-soul reality show contracts.

ā€œUm-hm,ā€ Jessica mumbled, eyes cast down on her phone, hardly listening, as she tapped out a response.

ā€œJessica, would you stop with the messaging already!ā€ Lila grabbed the phone out of Jessicaā€™s hand. ā€œScrew Bruce!ā€

ā€œHey!ā€ Jessica lunged for her phone but missed.

ā€œI have your attention now,ā€ Lila declared as she held the phone aloft. ā€œNo sudden moves or I will smash this thing.ā€

ā€œNo, no!ā€ Jessica cried, hands up in surrender as she eyed her iPhone nervously. ā€œLook, Lila, Iā€™m sorry. Itā€™s just you guys have been separated before. Itā€™s not like itā€™s never happened before.ā€

ā€œItā€™s never happened this way before.ā€ Lila waved the phone.

ā€œOkay, Iā€™m sorry. Iā€™ll listen. I know what itā€™s like to have your husband leave.ā€ Jessicaā€™s voice sounded full of sympathy now that Lila had a hostageā€”her iPhone. ā€œTrust me, I know.ā€

Lila hesitated. It was true that Jessica knew what it was like since Todd had moved out. Never before had Jessica lost something so dear that she hadnā€™t intended to lose.

ā€œAt least Ken hasnā€™t slept with a cheap plagiaristic criminal,ā€ Jessica said bitterly. Well, Lila had successfully gotten her to change the subject of conversation away from Bruce Patman. Unfortunately, not entirely in the direction Lila would have liked.

ā€œYou mean Sarah Miller?ā€ Lila asked. Jessicaā€™s phone was heavy in her hand. She stopped dangling it over the edge of the couch.

ā€œYou know?ā€

ā€œCaroline Pearce, remember? Everyone knows.ā€ Lila shrugged. Even though Ken wasnā€™t speaking to her, Lila was totally sure he hadnā€™t slept with anyone else, certainly not her main Housewife competition, Ashley Morgan. Not yet, anyway. Even the thought of him kissing her made Lilaā€™s blood boil with jealousy. ā€œIs he in love with her?ā€

Jessica looked sharply at Lila. ā€œI donā€™t think so. He texted me, actually.ā€

ā€œAnd told you what?ā€

ā€œGive me my phone back and Iā€™ll show you.ā€ Jessica opened her palm, and Lila plunked her phone in it.

Jessica pulled up Toddā€™s
