and he couldn’t blame her. Not having all the pieces of the puzzle made the image unclear. But he knew, and it was enough. He was halfway to the bathroom when he heard her slip into the room.

“Stop running away from me.”

He wasn’t exactly running, he was regrouping. At least, that’s what he told himself. She was so close he’d be unable to keep her out of the bathroom, so he decided to go for a barrier instead. He turned the knobs in his standalone shower to the side of the tub and let the water heat up before he risked stepping in. The shower was too fucking hot, but he didn’t care. Burning in Hell would be so much fucking worse. The scalding water should stop her for getting in with him. He could at least keep them separated by the glass and steam.

Maybe if he couldn’t see her, he’d be able to breathe and compose himself.

“Adon– Shit! You’re gonna burn me.”

He spun around, and there she was, naked and attempting to get in the shower with him. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“I’m showering with my mate. What’s it look like I’m doing?” she argued, hands on her hips. Her hair was wild around her shoulders, and her chest heaved, making her breasts sway in a way that made him want to cup their weight in his hands.

But he couldn’t allow himself to touch her.

“Fabiana,” Adonis pleaded, closing his eyes, “not right now.”

Please, not right now.

He’d never begged for anything in his life, not even when Antonio put a gun in his hand and told him to pull the trigger or he’d end Yanna’s life. He’d reacted by grabbing the gun and doing as commanded before his father could change his mind.

Adonis had never owned a dog again.

“This is precisely the moment. Move over,” Fabiana demanded.

She was going to be the fucking death of him, and it wasn’t the first time the thought had crossed his mind. Wolves spent their entire lives waiting for the one made only for them, and Adonis was no different. But in this moment, right now, he was ashamed his mate was shackled to him because he’d bound them in a way that was irrevocable.

And she would not stop trying to get into the fucking shower with him.

“I swear to the Goddess, I will put you over my shoulder.”

“Knee!” she yelled. “You mean put me over your knee!”

He froze. “What?”

“You don’t put someone over your shoulder to spank them, you put them over your knee. Now,” she continued, poking his chest to drive home every word, “move your ass over and turn down the heat.”

When he didn’t move fast enough, she stomped her foot, her hands balling into fists at her sides. “Now, Adonis. You will wash this shit off of me and then you’ll talk. No excuses.”

He didn’t respond. What could he say to a demand like that from his mate? He adjusted the heat to a more manageable level and moved over so she could join him under the spray. She turned to face him and stared into his eyes. Before he could speak, she wrapped her arms around his neck and plastered her mouth to his.

What the hell is with this woman? She was going to take them both down.

He gripped her close to keep her from falling and then gave in to her kiss until she ripped away.

“Wash me.”

He complied, wide-eyed and a tad amused at this small slip of a woman refusing to let him separate them more than necessary to clean off the blood.

“I can’t reach everywhere.”

“Try harder,” she fumed.

He spun them together and braced her back against the wall as he reached for the soap. She glared at him until he got them both lathered and dunked under the spray again before she lifted one eyebrow.

“You didn’t do a good-enough job down there.”

“‘Down there’? It’s got a name, pequeña. Let me hear you say it.”

“You’re not going to distract me.”

Of course not, but it was worth a shot. Fabiana was like a dog with a bone and nothing he did was going to change her mind. Adonis pulled away as much as he could with her legs wrapped around his waist, making sure she was pristine “down there.”

“Better?”

“Yes. Now we can go to the room.”

He chuckled, unable to hold on to the darkness with her clinging to him as she was. It was silly, really, trying to dry off in that position, so he gave up and just carried her to the bed. Finally, she released him and knelt on the mattress in front of him.

They were not having this conversation. It would be better for them to go to bed and act like this never happened. Tomorrow, he’d have his armor back and would be able to face her. Tonight, he just wanted to close his eyes and forget it all.

Cupping her hands to his cheeks, she forced him to look at her. “You. Are. Not. Your. Father.”

“Fabia–”

“Pequeña,” she interrupted. It sounded all right, considering her knowledge of Italian, but her accent was just a bit off.

He smiled. “Pequeña.”

The way her nose scrunched was adorable. “It sounds better when you do it.”

“It’s trick of the tongue.” His shoulders relaxed as he chuckled.

“Better?”

He nodded, knowing what she was asking.

“Now, don’t kill your brother. He was only trying to help. You know so much of my past and you don’t hold it against me.”

“You haven’t had to do the things I’ve done.”

“You’re right, I haven’t. But you’re a product of that environment, Adonis, nothing more.”

He snorted. “It’s why I run a cartel now. I am that environment.”

“You’re talking to the daughter of a Made Man, Adonis. I come from
