âSo be on your best behavior,â Carlita joked.
There was a small noise coming from the hall. Wentworth, another of Toriâs staff, appeared in the doorway. âThe rooms are ready, Mrs. Montgomery.â
âPerfect. Thank you, Wentworth.â Tori turned her attention to her houseguests. âWentworth and Byron will help retrieve your bags and show you to your rooms.â
âWhat about the car?â Ricco asked. âWeâre parked out front.â
âWentworth will show you to the garage.â Tori shot Carlita a quick look. âAlthough no one will enter the property without first getting through the gate, I would assume you want to keep the car out of sight.â
âYes. Please.â Carlita smiled gratefully. âI was hoping they could park it somewhereâŠsecure.â
âIâm ready to put my feet up and rest.â Brittney tottered to the doorway. âAll of this moving around is exhausting.â
Ricco followed Brittney from the room while Luigi lingered behind.
âYes, Luigi?â Carlita asked.
âI was just gonna sayâŠIâm sorry about the broad comment. I didnât mean anything by it.â
âBroad comment?â Tori asked.
âI was askinâ your guy what you did for a living to afford a swanky place like this.â
âI see. WellâŠperhaps in some circles I am a âbroad.â No offense taken.â
âThanks.â Luigi followed the others into the hall, and Carlita waited until they were gone. âIâm gonna apologize for their actions ahead of time. Theyâre a littleâŠshall we sayâŠrough around the edges?â
âI suspected as much.â Tori motioned to a pair of overstuffed chairs in front of the fireplace. âI know you told me you needed to keep these three out of sight, and it has something to do with that horrid Savannah Six memberâs death. Did they kill him? Because I would think the city would award them some sort of medal of honor for ridding the city of the vermin.â
âThey didnât, but they are suspects. They were caught on Annie Dowtonâs surveillance cameras the night the guy died. The police are searching for them.â
âAnd theyâre not completely innocent upstanding citizens,â Tori guessed.
âThey have rap sheets,â Carlita said bluntly. âThey didnât take Rutger out, but easily could have based on their career paths.â
Tori answered with an equally blunt statement. âTheyâre family from up north.â
Carlita nodded. âSent down here with my daughter-in-law because of a family situation in Atlantic City. She isnât safe there. She isnât safe in New York, and now it doesnât look like sheâs safe in Savannah.â
âSheâs perfectly safe here.â Tori reached out and patted Carlitaâs hand. âAnd so are the other two. In fact, they might liven the place up.â
âTheyâre guaranteed to do that. I donât know how I can ever thank you for allowing them to stay,â Carlita said. âI owe you one.â
âPerhaps I could stop by to enjoy another fabulous meal at Ravelloâs.â
âAbsolutely. Which reminds me, Iâm hosting a fall bash. I invited Pete, along with some of the other locals and friends, to a party at the restaurant the Saturday after Halloween.â
âInvitation accepted. I need to get out more.â
âByron, Wentworth and Mrs. OâBrien are invited, as well.â
âThank you.â Tori changed the subject, and they chatted about Pirate Ventures, their partnership with Pete. âHow is Pete these days?â
âHeâs doinâ good. We had breakfast a coupla days ago before all heck broke outâŠdead bodies, police stakeouts, the Black Stallion Clubâs owner being thrown out of the trolleyâs emergency exit.â
Tori interrupted. âI thought they closed that dreadful place.â
âIt reopened under Phil Duceâs management.â
âDuce.â Tori tapped her chin. âAnother family member.â
âYeah, and theyâre still up to their old tricks. In fact, before Luigi and Ricco ended up on the run, they found out there was some sort of trouble brewing between the Savannah Six and local area business owners.â
âTrouble?â
âI think it involves whoever took Davis Rutger out. Either Rutgerâs own crew or an area business associate, possibly even Duceâs doing. Things are coming to a head. The only problem is I donât know where or when. From what the guys said, itâs happening soon. Vito Castellini has them on the hunt down here, too. They finally admitted it last night. Theyâre doing some sniffing around about some backdoor deals, illegal gambling opportunitiesâŠwho knows what else.â
âAnd youâre sure they didnât take this Davis Rutger man out?â Tori asked.
âAlmost positive. First of all, they just arrived in town.â
Tori interrupted. âSo maybe they did do it. Maybe this Vito person sent them down for a hit.â
âTrue.â Carlita shifted as she considered Toriâs suggestion. âI guess they could have, and now seeing as thereâs a possible connection between some of the business owners down here and the Savannah Five. Still, they swear they didnât whack him.â
âSince youâre my only âmafiaâ connection, I only know what I watch on television. I thought most mafia hits filled someone full of lead.â
âThey are, and Rutger was strangled.â
âPerhaps the killer or killers were concerned about the sound of gunshots.â
âIâm pretty sure they have silencers so that would have been a non-issue.â Carlita ran a ragged hand through her hair. âI guess thereâs a chance they took Rutger out. The motive would be Vito sent them down here for a hit and opportunity would be luring him to the vacant lot.â
âI see.â Tori leaned back in her chair. âEven if your houseguests did take Rutger out, Iâm confident they wouldnât see me or anyone in my household as a target.â
âAnd you wouldnât be, but youâre my friend. I hate to put you in a potentially dangerous situation,â Carlita fretted.
âMy dear, I have been surrounded by questionable associates for most of my life. Luigi and Ricco are not after me.â Tori pointed to the antique weaponry on the wall. âAlthough I may have to make sure one of my antiques doesnât grow legs and walk
