way even though she wanted to run right to the meeting and burst through the door. She needed him, her mate, her heart.

Goddess, don’t let me lose him. Not after I’ve finally found him and can tell him I love him.

She should have said it the night he told her. Should have fought against the sleep holding her down and made sure she whispered it. Or any of the other nights since then.

But she thought she had time, another special moment to give him the words.

The stairs echoed as she climbed them, the sound ringing in her head.

Adonis.

Gone.

Dead.

No!

When she reached the landing, she moved faster. This floor was only for their rooms and meeting hall. All the guards were downstairs since it was daytime. Now that the coast was clear, she could run.

“So you got confirmation?”

She stilled, her heart finally beating right. Just hearing his voice settled everything for her. He was okay, she had time.

“The suits worked perfectly. My mark didn’t even know I was there,” Yanni boasted.

Suits?

“How close were you able to get?”

“I was in the same room with him, Adonis, watching from the shadows as the puta clicked away at his computer. Imagine, a shifter unaware someone was in the room with him, especially another shifter.”

What were they talking about?

“Then we know we can use them on other missions. Make sure your men are ready, Russel. Those going to pick up the shipment should be the ones in suits to make sure they aren’t seen or traceable. Might be the time to take a hit at Danello’s holdings. He wouldn’t be able to link it to us.”

Fabiana stumbled backward, holding her hand to her mouth. She hadn’t worn her suit often around the compound lately, but she had it on today so she could test the evergreen scent attachment for Russel’s man. That one had been the most difficult signature to loop in, and she wondered if she had to code it closer to hers.

None of the men inside knew she was there.

Just like the man Yanni had been sent to kill.

She doubled over, her breath leaving her body.

Adonis knew she had always feared her suits would be used for the wrong reason, for being a toy for some sick bastard who decided to break the world and take what they wanted.

And right now, that sick bastard was her mate.

Fabiana couldn’t breathe.

Well, it seemed she had her answer. Adonis wasn’t at the battle and she was alone because he was with his pack, making deals and leaving everyone else to fend for themselves.

I’m done.

What he had done, even if he regretted now, was give her confidence. She stood taller, knew who she was, and wouldn’t let herself be taken advantage of again. She’d burn this shit down around his ears before it came to that.

Fabiana spun on her heal.

No, he wouldn’t be using her suits. She’d pack away what she had for the Alphas and the rest … would be gone.

It was easier this time, the mask she wore as her heart broke. She slipped back into the woman her father had taught her to be. Head held high, she smiled and teased, swayed her hips, and joked with the men as she passed them. They were none the wiser.

By the time she made it to the lab, her tears only pooled on the inside, filling the space where her heart should be and drowning her. They didn’t see it. No one did.

“Hey, Billie, thanks for keeping an eye on things while I took some time to eat,” she said in greeting, remembering her excuse.

“Sure. It wasn’t much anyway. Most of the team decided to head out for lunch too. You didn’t see them?”

Fabiana shook her head, her lie rolling too easily off the tongue. “No. I grabbed what I could and headed to the Temple. I was worried if I stayed in the house I’d just bring it back here and end up eating nothing.”

“Good idea.”

“I’m going to go ahead and shut down for the day.”

“Are you okay?”

She had to pull her mask on tighter, smile brighter. “Yes, Mother. I don’t want my mate hollering at me for working too much. The last suit is coded, and I’ve got everything I need for the Alphas. Once they are put into development, they should be smooth going.”

“The machine nearly makes them itself,” Billie agreed. “I don’t even know how much I’m really helping you.”

“More than you know, Billie.” Fabiana pulled the woman close and hugged her. “Without your plan for the pattern, the machine wouldn’t be able to keep up. You worked with very little sleep to create one for every Alpha. I’ll just get things set up and we can continue tomorrow, deal?”

Billie watched her with searching eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m tired, and a bit afraid.” It wasn’t a lie. “The longer we don’t hear from Skuld, the more she has time to prepare. I want to do everything I can before the war is here.”

Billie rubbed her back. “Oh, love. I understand. Okay, I’ll clear out, but you better be out of here in an hour or I’ll drag you out myself.”

Fabiana lifted three fingers into the air. “Promise.”

Billie moved through the lab, passing on the information regarding shutting down the rest of the day. Her head nanotech was the only one who grumbled the most, and Fabiana wanted to throw something at him to hurry it along. She understood though. If it were any other day, people couldn’t pry her away from her beakers and microscope, but she just needed them all gone. STAT.

Billie took matters into her own hands, however, and grabbed the man by his ear before marching him out the door.

Fabiana laughed,
