would prove to be avery long paper trail in Audrey’s honor.

Thirteen calls to thirteen differentout-of-state numbers.

Regular calls to eight different women, whomay or may not be working as her girls.

Random calls to a vast array of upscalehotels, mostly located in Florida.

Calls to men. Each man was called twice. After the first call, one of the eight women was called before theman was called again. And that was the last call to the man in theentire phone log. Working hypothesis: Call the trick to determineinterest and time, contact girl for schedule, and then return acall to the trick to confirm.

Voice mailbox calls seemed to taper off byJuly, 2008. By November, many calls were made to a new number, which Google showed belonging to a rented house in New SmyrnaBeach.

Of all my findings, the last seemedconfusing. Eager to share my thoughts with the only person I could,I called Bob Thompson.

“Hi, Paul. What’s up?” heasked in a hoarse voice as he cleared his voice. I had forgotten itwas still early for many people.

“Hi, Bob. I’m sorry tobother you so early, but I was hoping to run some things by youthat you may or may not find interesting.”

“Go ahead,” he replied, making no attempt to suppress his yawn.

“Well, I’m still lookingat Audrey’s phone records and I found a number belonging to arental house in New Smyrna Beach just two and a half hours north ofhere. I know this may seem like a stretch, but Audrey called itconstantly and the rental ad says the house has two bedrooms, fivebeds, linens included, and a fully stocked fridge.” I paused beforepresenting my theory. “Could this be a sex house?”

“Wow. I’m not sure,” heremarked, not at all sounding convinced. Perhaps I was reading intoeverything too much. “But, you know, my private eye, Miles, is upin Orlando right now and he’s returning on Saturday morning. Icould always call him and ask him to stop by on his way home, seeif Friday night’s guests, including Audrey, might still be there.”He too was curious and determined.

“That sounds great, thanks. Let me know what he finds.” I hung up the phone feelingenthused by both my productivity and the knowledge that Bob mightbe a like-minded partner in my investigation.

* * *

Saturday afternoon found me glancing at thephone, eager to hear what Bob’s P.I. may have found. I practicallydove over the couch when the phone finally rang around oneo’clock.

“Paul, it’s Bob.” My heartwas racing although I was trying to appear casual.

“Oh, Bob. What’sup?”

“It’s not a sex house,”Bob responded flatly, dashing my hopes. “The owner’s niece and hertwelve year old daughter are living there, but Miles traced theowner of the house and came up with something veryinteresting.”

“Really, what?” I asked, abandoning all attempts to sound casual as the promise of anotherdiscovery sent a thrill through me.

“Well, the owner’s name isTony Sawgrass and, according to Miles, he’s about seventy yearsold, has an investment business and a real estate developmentbusiness, and, are you ready for this, has a reputation for gettinghis clients hookers!” My mouth dropped open.

“Wow. That isunbelievable,” articulating each syllable to emphasize my shock.“I’m going back to the phone logs to find out how often she calledhim. I’ll get back to you.” Grabbing the now worn and scribbledpages of the phone logs, I began to review Tony Sawgrass’ numberagain, and once again, a pattern emerged.

On any given day, Audreywould call Tony Sawgrass early, around 7:00 a.m., and then callthree or more men. These calls would then be followed by calls toRoyce as well as calls to collect messages from the voice mailbox,to get the names and phone numbers of more tricks. Calls took placebetween Audrey, Tony, and Royce all day and all night long.Considering the regularity of the calls and the daily patterns, Iwas beginning to get a clearer picture of what seemed to be aprostitution ring and its cast of characters: Tony Sawgrass, procurer of men; Royce Rocco, pimp and possible owner of ring; andAudrey Munson, prostitute and madam. The phone logs revealed theentire process. Tony gets the names and numbers of men through somenetwork of referrals and Audrey calls Tony each morning to get themen’s names for the purpose of seeking out their likes and wants. After that conversation, Audrey then calls Royce, who makesarrangements with the girls and sends them on their way. At middayand then again in the evening, the cycle begins again with newnames, new calls, and more girls.

Disgusted by an operationthat had thrived throughout the course of my marriage, I examinedthe month of May 2007, a busy time for Audrey and her associates.Remembering that Bob had told me Audrey didn’t have custody of herchildren for three weeks of that month, I felt my stomach turn as Icounted calls to fifty-three different people. When I contacted Bobto share my findings, he in turn shared the numbers withMiles.

Of the fifty-three numbers, almost all weremen, and most were either real estate agents or developers. Iswallowed hard as I digested Miles’s findings, fighting thetumultuous turn of my stomach.

I knew I was on tosomething big. My mind went back to my reading with Terri Lynn overtwo months ago. Never considering how true and literal her wordswere, the phrase, “she looks at it like whoring” burned my ears.Audrey is a hooker, she is a whore. More than that, it explainedwhy a stay-at-home mom would be so attentive to the grooming of herpubic hair, why a stay-at-home mom would have large breastimplants. It even explained why our love making was always soimpersonal, Audrey simply lying back, never looking at me, nevershowing any signs of interest, passion, or even an attempt to kissme. Recalling the movie “Klute,” I remembered Jane Fonda, who played a hooker, explaining to someone that the reason shenever French kissed her johns was that it was too personal. I waslooking for answers, and now I was finding them in a torrent oflascivious revelations.

I wanted still moreanswers. I picked up the phone and once again reached out to TerriLynn.
