âIâm sorry,â I say. âLike I said on the phone, I couldnât pull off a fake romance, even if I wanted to. My dislike of Savage runs too deep. After one episode, let alone three, the whole world would know Iâm a liar.â
âAw, I have faith in your performance skills,â Daria coaxes. âAll youâd have to do is focus on nothing but Savageâs physical beauty, and ignore everything else about him, and, voila, youâd convince yourself heâs the great love of your life.â She leans forward across her sleek desk. âIn other words, Iâm telling you to think like a man.â
We both giggle at the joke.
Daria leans back in her high-back chair again, steepling her fingers. âDo you think youâd be able to fall in âfake loveâ with Savage for the right price?â
I shake my head. âYou know they reserve the real money in their budget for the judges. Theyâd never offer me anything even close to what Iâd need to feel tempted.â
Daria lifts an eyebrow. âAh, so you admit there is a number, at least, theoretically, that could make you say yes.â
âHypothetically, sure. But whatever that number isâand, honestly, I donât know what it would beâthe show would never offer it to me, so itâs a moot point.â
Daria looks like the gears in her head are turning. âIâm not so sure about that. When I spoke to the executive producer, Nadine, this morning, she played it cool, but I could tell she was dying to make this happen. Thanks to that video of you and Savage arguing on the sidewalk in New York, and your interview on Sylvia, and, the meme from the awards show, and now, this Instagrammerâs viral video, I donât think itâs an understatement to say you and Savage are a powerhouse. A shoo-in to grab massive ratings. Surely, Nadine knows that.â
None of this is new information. Daria said all of this, essentially, during our conversation on the phone.
When I shrug and say nothing, simply because I donât believe for a minute the show would pay me what it would take, Daria puts her elbows onto her desk and smiles.
âWhat do you make of that Instagram video?â she asks. âDo you think she was telling the truth about what Savage said?â
I snort. âHeck no. If a beautiful woman suggested going upstairs, I guarantee I didnât even cross Savageâs mind. Obviously, that Instagrammer came up with a story she knew would make her video go viral.â
Daria looks unconvinced. âWell, for Godâs sake, donât let on you donât believe the video when you see Savage. Let him think you believe every single word.â
âI donât plan to see him. Even when Iâm on-set in a few weeks, Iâm going to avoid him like the plague.â
Daria smirks. âActually, youâll be seeing Savage sooner than you think.â She looks at her watch. âHe was supposed to be here five minutes ago, actually.â
âDaria!â
She shrugs. âHis agent called and begged me for a meeting and I felt it would be in your best interests to hear him out.â
I cross my arms over my chest. âI donât want to see him.â
âCome on. At the very least, wonât it be fun to torture him by pretending you believe every word that woman said? That has to be his worst nightmare.â
I twist my mouth. Sheâs got a point. âStill,â I say, âthe fun in that wouldnât outweigh the discomfort Iâd feel at seeing him.â
âWhy do you hate him so much?â Daria narrows her eyes. âYou two really did get together, didnât you? You fell for him, and he cheated on you?â
âOh, God, no. Daria, listen. I sincerely appreciate you looking out for me and fighting so hard for my career, but thereâs no point in having this meeting with Savage and his agent. The show wonât offer me enough to tempt me. And you said yourself three episodes as a mentor wonât make that much more of an impact than one.â
âYouâre misconstruing what I said.â
âRegardless, itâs not like theyâre offering me a seat at the judgesâ table with a paycheck to match. So, letâs justâ"
âWell, now weâre getting somewhere,â Daria interrupts. âAre you saying, if I could get you thatâa seat at the judgesâ table with a paycheck to matchâyouâd say yes?â
My lips part in surprise that sheâs even saying that out loud. âThey already said they donât want me as a judge. Hence, the reason they hired Savage to replace Hugh, rather than me.â
âTrue, but that happened before todayâbefore that womanâs video went off like an atomic bomb on the internet.â She leans back and swivels in her chair. âI could be wrong, but Iâve got a hunch the landscape dramatically shifted underneath Savageâs feet this morning. Donât you think itâs a bit weird his agent called me, asking for this meeting? He made it sound like Savage was willing to do you a favor by saying yes to this . . . but would Savage really do a favor for you?â
âAbsolutely not.â I pause. âSo . . . what, then?â
âIâd bet money Savageâs job is on the line this morning, thanks to his shenanigans last night. My hunch is that Savageâs head is on the chopping block, and thanks to that womanâs video, and everything thatâs come before, the producers have made you a condition of Savageâs continued employment.â
My mouth hangs open as my eyes widen with glee.
âNow you understand why I begged you to come down here for this meeting. If Iâm right about Savageâs job depending on you, and if Iâm right about the show practically drooling over this idea, then I think I can leverage both sides against the other to get you an offer you simply canât refuse.â
I clutch my heart, feeling like itâs beating a mile a minute. âOkay, this might be a stupid question, but if youâre right about Savageâs job being on the line, then why wouldnât I say no to being his fake girlfriend, thereby getting Savage shit-canned, and
