Katrina smiled at Todd. âThat sounds great! Thatâll give me time for a fresh cut, a long hot shower, and a chance to don a little black dress just for you.â She poked him in the stomach.
âSounds like a plan. That I would like to see,â Todd said. âI know it might seem a little strange for me to propose it given where weâve been, but I think Bridgewater would be kind of special.â
âAlright. Well, take care of yourself. Get some rest, and weâll meet up tomorrow night. What time?â
âIâll pick you up at seven.â
âSee you then,â she said. âKiss me goodbye?â
Todd leaned into Katrina, embracing and kissing her as they carried their discharge papers toward the hospital exit.
Katrina hailed a cab, and Todd watched her ride away as Livewire also exited the hospital.
âHey, Todd.â
âHey, Livewire. Youâre looking better already.â
âThanks. Whatâs on the agenda now that youâre back up and at âem?â
âI suppose Iâll go clean myself up and reorganize my apartment. Iâd like to give the pickup a good washing. Thatâs assuming I can find it. Iâm sure they impounded it by now.â
âYeah⊠Good luck with that.â
âAnd you?â
âI donât know,â Livewire said. âMy old lady still wants nothinâ to do with me. Julie was always psychoanalyzinâ me. It pushed me to my limits. We were separated a while. Imagine that, even a dad-gum therapist canât fix the problems of the world. As for whatâs next, Iâll probably take a vacation. Chris left me a pretty decent payday before I⊠we disappeared.â
Julie? What are the odds? Itâs a small world.
âAlright. Well, all the best,â Todd said, extending his hand to shake Livewireâs.
âLikewise. See you around⊠or if I donâtâŠ. thatâll be okay too⊠not the fondest of memories we have together.â
âGood luck. If you ever want to get investing in the markets, Iâll probably try to get my job back at Riverton Financial.â
âMaybe so. Take care.â
CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE
CHRIS WILKERSON laid on the floor of the Creepy Nights basement. He remained immobile as his mind continued.
Iâve been stuck here a while. I just have to come to grips with it, but why am I still here?
Detective Penske and Officer Abram Markel came into the basement as he stared up at them.
âChris, Chris? Are you okay?â Penske said as he checked his pulse. âHeâs gone. I guess the guilt was too much for him to handle.â
âWhat was his goal with all this?â Markel asked.
âI donât know. This⊠he takes from the cradle to the grave.â
You donât understand. It wasnât my doing. It never was.
Penske bent over and patted Chris on his cold shoulder. âI always had a feeling that there was something a little off about this place, certainly, with this guy. Was that your doing?â
Of course it wasnât. Canât you pick this place apart a little before jumping to conclusions?
Penske stared at Chris as he remained motionless.
âItâs kind of weird, isnât it? That glow in his eyes.â
âYeah. You make a good point,â Markel said. âWhen I look at him, I donât see life, but I donât see death either.â
Control yourself. Itâs just a phase. Itâll pass. Youâll move on to greener pastures. Just give it some time.
âIâm not going to call this in yet,â Penske said. âLetâs barricade the basement with some caution tape.â
âWhy not?â Merkel asked, brushing some dust bunnies off the back of one of the old pews. âYou should never leave a dead body to rot. I learned that at the academy on my first day.â
No, you shouldnât. Maybe the embalming ritual will seal the deal for me.
âDonât get smart with me. Weâll come back in a few minutes. Did you want to see the control room?â
âSure.â
They walked toward the area and studied the empty tunnel on the monitors, kicking a bunch of Flitz beer cans to the side.
âWhat a slob,â Merkel said.
âHe watched all of them like some kind of freakâŠsome of them for months.â
Channel your emotion before you canât anymore.
âToo sad. Are they going to shut this place down?â
âI guess itâs up to the ex. She was one of the victims. Somehow I donât see it opening back up anytime soonâŠâ Penske said. âLetâs go grab a bite. Weâll come back in a bit. Wrap the basement with caution tape, would you?â
Iâm still here. Donât forget.
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
TODD ADAMS drove the extended driveway toward the Reinhold estate in his once impounded pickup.
Wow! This place is nice.
Katrina stood out front, waiting for him as he approached.
He honked the horn in a playful rhythm, climbing out to open her door.
âCurbside pickup⊠for the most beautiful woman in all of Riverton.â
She donned a huge grin as she leaned in to kiss him. He was clean-shaven, fresh-faced, and his hair swooped and coiffed neatly to the side, sporting a three-piece suit saved for weddings and funerals.
âThanks for picking me up. You look handsome.â They both climbed into the truck and Todd wheeled the vehicle around toward the gate.
âThanks,â he said. âLook at you! Those legs hadnât seen the light of day in ages, and youâre still breathtaking.â
She punched him in the arm as they exited the driveway. âWas that a compliment or a jab?â
âThere are many layers to Todd Adams. Youâll just have to wait and see.â He leaned across the seat and kissed her as they arrived at the gate.
Why do I feel nervous? Itâs not my first rodeo.
âYou really look gorgeous tonight. This is quite the lovely property you have.â
âThank you.â
âI watched the ten-oâclock news last night. Iâm sorry to hear about Chris. Are you sure you still want to go? I should have called earlier. Do they know what happened?â
Katrina shook her head. âYes, I still want to go. They donât know what happened. They found him in the basement. Theyâll clean him up as best
