little. There is supposed to be a reception after, and I’m sure it’s going to be quite the feast.”

“It damn well better be,” said Micah’s grandmother. “I practically made them sign a contract saying that they would provide meat. It looks like there’s going to be a couple of roasts there, and I want to be front and center for those. The more meat, the better. Obviously, there will be a mountain of booze, and I can’t wait for the wedding cakes. Hehe, matching wedding cakes. I never would have predicted it.”

“You aren’t the only one,” Bunni told her as she prepared a plate for Micah. “We were all surprised.”

“But love is love, and who are we to get in the way? And we should be excited. What a perfect time to get married! Now that the Society of Monks have had their balls royally tapped, I expect a glorious baby boom, to follow one for the ages. Maybe it’s best if we stay over here with her Plains Dwellers. There’s going to be a lot of little fuckers running around Neo-Hokkaido in nine months to a year, you can believe that.”

Bunni returned to Micah with a plate, and as he had requested, she’d put just a few items on it, mostly fruit as well as a few small pastries. The cheesecake squares were to die for, and the chocolate hazelnut cups definitely had Micah going back for seconds. He didn’t normally have much of a sweet tooth, but whoever Youseg had hired to cater the event knew what they were doing, and soon, Micah had eaten more than he had planned.

From that moment forward, time passed in a weird way, fast at points and slow in others. Soon, the event had started, music played by a group of Heian musicians seated behind a partition, the crowd present mostly consisting of Youseg’s friends, but also a few Monks of Repose. Surprisingly, Ahmey was there as well, as were a handful of Hermetics.

Choro was already waiting at the front as Micah approached. His old friend was dressed in the exact same outfit as Micah, albeit a few sizes larger, and he looked sharp, more handsome than he ever had before.

“You clean up nice,” Micah told him as the two shook hands, Choro’s a little clammy. It was clear he was nervous.

“I try.”

Micah still couldn’t believe that he was getting married alongside his best friend, nor could he believe that Julia had actually said yes to Choro. The double wedding had been his grandmother’s idea, Choro confessing to her over the time Micah and the ladies were in Neo-Hokkaido that he had secretly been communicating with Julia, that he loved her, and that she loved him.

It all came as a surprise, but nothing in Micah’s life was predictable by this point.

There were six bridesmaids behind Micah and Choro, three related to Julia, and Yuri, Bunni, and Soraya next to them, the kitsune with a firm smile on her face and an eye on the help.

The band started up again just as Micah turned to the end of the carpet covered in rose petals to see Liza, the beautiful nun in an absolutely stunning silver wedding dress that sparkled, the blonde practically floating over to him.

Liza took her place across from Micah, her eyes filled with love. Music started up again and they all looked to the end of the long carpet to see Julia with her silver black hair done up in a bun, in a dress that was slightly darker but equally flowing. She approached as well and joined Choro.

The vow exchange didn’t take too long, and soon Micah and Liza were saying “I do,” followed by Choro and Julia. The double wedding was a success. People began to clap, and a few of the older members of the crowd wiped tears away, Micah’s grandmother crying the most out of everyone that had joined them.

“My beautiful boy and his best friend getting married on the same day, who would’ve thought it was even possible? What genius could have pulled something as unique as this?” she asked the elderly Plains Dweller seated next her. “It’s a miracle, I tell you. This is a fairytale ending, goddammit, I don’t care what you think, lady. Stop looking at me like that. I’m not crying!”

What followed was a huge feast, Micah seated with his grandmother, his wives, and Soraya, Youseg and Ahmey in the middle, Choro and Julia on the other side along with some of the Hermetics and Julia’s parents. The partitions came down and the band switched instruments. They began playing an up-tempo song, and soon the crowd was dancing, Plains Dwellers intermingling with Hermetics intermingling with a few of the Monks of Repose.

The alcohol flowed, and as it did more people joined in the dance, Micah taking center stage with Liza, and occasionally switching off to his two other wives. He danced with Soraya, and his grandmother, but then it was back to Liza, who kissed him passionately at the end of every song.

Pressing away from her for just a moment, Micah looked out of the crowd and noticed a light green energy radiating above them, spiraling upward. It was industria, the power that not only ran his world, but cycled within him, a power that had saved his life, one that had opened more doors than he ever thought possible.

He didn’t know what would come next, but he knew by looking out at the crowd, and at the happy faces of his wives, his grandmother, and his best friend, that things were changing for the better. He knew that he would live, that they would make it through all of this, and that they would come out of it better than they were going in. A true hero’s journey, but also a journey available to anyone who trusted their instincts, who took
