The two brawled throughout the house and eventually out into the yard where they shifted into full lycan form and continued fighting.
Tala and Jill stood on the porch, watching.
Tala wondered if she should try to stop them. Jill stopped her. “No. They both need this. Kain was very dear to them. Losing him is causing the tension to finally surface.”
“This is all your fault! I know what he did for you! He was almost dead from all those years he took hell for me!” Gabriel howled, running at the white lycan and slashing across his face.
“So, it was you. You were Kain’s original charge.” Damien dodged another hit then countered with one of Kain’s round house kicks.
“I wasn’t only his charge. He dug me out of holes I never thought I could escape from. He got me out of trouble when I thought my father would kill me! You will never know how agonizing this loss is for me!” Gabriel gripped Damien’s claws, digging his nails into the dirt.
Tala’s heart grew heavier the longer the fight went on, she couldn’t watch anymore, left Jill and went into the shed, closing the door. Candlelight flickered in the small space. The only vigil for a fallen soldier.
The heavy scent of her lover’s skin filled her nostrils, further deepening the pain she felt.
Suddenly, she screamed, covering her mouth. The commotion ended the fighting in the yard and Damien, Gabriel and Jill all pushed into the shed.
Damien gasped. “This isn’t possible. Where’s his body?”
Gabriel, a look of shock on his face, shook his head. “I.. I don’t know.”
Jill looked out of the window. “This makes no sense. There’s no blood, clothing or footprints. No scent. Damien, what’s going on?”
Damien shook his head. “Jill, I don’t know. Who would want to steal his body?”
Gabriel snarled. “He made many enemies. Some blood-sucker might’ve wanted to dis-honor him.”
Joel came in, nearly falling back and catching himself with his back foot. “What in Sun’s hell? Where’s?”
All three lycans answered “I don’t know” at the same time. Tala had her head laid against the empty table, fiddling with the green blanket still permeated with her lover’s blood and scent.
The young lycan averted his attention. “I miss him too, but I came up here to let you know Zane is here.”
“The hell does that parasite want?” Gabriel barked, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Fang off, Gabriel. Zane did a lot for us against Anthony.” Jill snapped.
The vampire walked through the door, stopping with a shocked expression the minute he saw the bed. He took Damien full fisted by the shirt collar, demanding to know where Kain’s body was.
When Damien told Zane he didn’t know, the vampire’s eyes began glowing a burning amber.
Zane’s fangs ground against themselves. “First, I get told you refused to honor him with a soldier’s burial. Now, I’m hearing you don’t know where his body is? Your incompetence is staggering at this point, Pierce!”
Tala took Zane’s arm in hers. “Zane, please. No more. I can’t take anymore. I’m so upset already.”
Calming himself, Zane lowered Damien to the floor. “I’m sorry. You shouldn’t be dealing with this much strain in your condition. Who would do this?”
Gabriel scoffed at him. “One of your kind is my guess.”
Zane returned Gabriel’s sarcasm with some of his own. “Were it one of my kind, I would be able to sense them. I don’t smell any foreign lycans either.”
A whisper in the back of Tala’s mind took her from the room. She followed the voice out into the back yard where a familiar white owl sat upon a branch.
Silver tears fell down its face.
Tala pleaded with the goddess to tell her where her mate was. “Be patient, dear one. Alexander is in good hands. In three days’ time, go to the place in the forest where he found you. Wait for him there.”
Tala attempted to ask Luna what she meant, but the owl took to the sky until Tala could no longer see her small shape.
A cold drop of rain fell from a leaf onto Kain’s cheek. He opened his eyes to find himself standing in the same forest he’d been in before. Only this time he wasn’t alone.
Pentacost sat on a rock looking down at his son. “It’s good to see you again, my son.”
Kain greeted his father, holding back none of the frustration he felt after hearing Solaris’ words regarding his parents.
Pentacost offered a nod and stood. “I can imagine you have any number of questions but now is not the time.”
“Honor me one. You owe me at least one.” Kain demanded.
Pentacost sighed. “Is it about your mother?”
“Tell me who she is. Why have you never told me she was a vampire? I have a right to know, father!” Kain could feel the same anger from the time he’d yelled at his father.
“Alexander, leave it alone. What does it matter who your mother was? You are being given a second chance. A life free from the bane.”
“Pentacost, tell me who my mother was.” Kain growled through elongated fangs.
Pentacost turned around to answer but didn’t receive the chance before Solaris arrived. He embraced his son. “Looks like I lack the time. Alexander, let the past rest where it is. I was only to watch over you until she arrived. I am so proud of you. Hold your head high and forgive me for failing you.”
Kain’s eyes and heart softened. He returned the embrace, forgiving his father and telling him Kain loved him.
Pentacost nodded and walked across the small brook to join the rest of his family in the afterlife.
Solaris held out her hand. “Are you ready to return home, Alexander?”
Despite being confused, Kain’s heart leapt with joy.
Solaris nodded. “I will give you a week to get certain promises fulfilled and to be with your mate. Then you are to leave.”
Kain felt like he got hit in the stomach. Nausea nearly took
