think that he might just be the first decent man Iā€™ve met. And Iā€™m so glad there are no lies between us anymore.

The guard comes into the room. ā€œVisiting time is over, yā€™all. Sorry.ā€ He lifts the handcuffs and dangles them. ā€œWe need to put these back on, Alejandro. Rules are rules. Let me see your wrists.ā€

This is always the hardest part.

I glance away and bite the insides of my cheeks to stifle a sob. I hate seeing my brother dragged away, those rings tightened around his wrists.

Nathanā€™s warm palm lands on my back once again and this time he rubs me gently. ā€œStay strong, Eva,ā€ he whispers.

His touch is soothing, and his words give me the courage I need to blink at Ale.

Nathan ruffles my brotherā€™s hair that for some reason seems shinier than ever. ā€œBe good, Ale,ā€ he says.

I pull my brother into a hug. ā€œJust a few more days, little brother. Soon youā€™re coming home.ā€

The guard clears his throat. ā€œSorry, Miss Flores. We really need to go back.ā€

ā€œDonā€™t worry, Eva.ā€ Ale winks at me. ā€œIā€™ll be fine. Will you bring Nathan to pick me up?ā€

I donā€™t know how to answer. Would Nathan want to come? ā€œAle, weā€™ll have to see. Nathan is a busy businessman.ā€

The corners of Aleā€™s lips turn down. He must have enjoyed Nathanā€™s company more than I thought.

Nathan pats my brotherā€™s arm. ā€œIā€™ll do my best to come. But In any case, once youā€™re out, Iā€™m taking you to see the new Avengers movie. What do you say?ā€

ā€œIn a cinema just for us?ā€ my brother asks with puppy eyes.

ā€œSure thing.ā€ Nathan grins, then turns to me. ā€œI think we need to leave now, Eva.ā€ He cocks his head to the guard who is drumming his fingers on his belt.

ā€œSee you soon, Ale.ā€ I wave to my brother.

As we walk out of the visitor area, Ale yells behind us. ā€œAny last advice, Nate?ā€

Nathan glances back and points a finger to the ceiling. ā€œJust one. Never forgetā€”ā€˜With great power comes great responsibility.ā€™ā€

I see the guard rolling his eyes, and I grab Nathanā€™s elbow. This time Iā€™m the one pulling him toward the exit. ā€œAll right, Stan Lee, letā€™s move.ā€

We go to collect our belongings weā€™ve left at the gate, and in a few minutes, weā€™re outside, sitting in Nathanā€™s Jaguar.

I lean back on the comfy seats and let the tension dissipate from my muscles. Iā€™m so grateful to have come with Nathan. I wonā€™t have to endure the journey back alone. Itā€™s a time when I always feel emotionally vulnerable. His presence envelops me in a warm sense of protection, which is relaxing and confusing at the same time.

Nathanā€™s smooth baritone wakes me from my contemplation. ā€œYou look more at ease now. It must be tough to carry so much responsibility for your family.ā€ He shakes his head. ā€œHonestly, I donā€™t even know how you do it.ā€

ā€œYou work for your familyā€™s company, right? Youā€™re responsible for them, too.ā€

ā€œNot in the same way as you. I make money for them. But itā€™s the satisfaction of succeeding at my own goals that drives me. Iā€™m not altruistic like you are. Or this caring. Facts that have turned against me andā€¦Iā€™ve been considering changing lately.ā€ Thereā€™s an odd edge to his voice.

ā€œWhat do you mean ā€˜turned against youā€™?ā€ I ask.

His chin hardens. ā€œLetā€™s not speak about this. Do you come every week to see your brother?ā€

ā€œI tried. At first, I missed my visiting times, because I was busy with settling back in San Sebastian. But, lately, Iā€™ve paid attention not to go a week without dropping by. Even if heā€™ll be released soon, he still needs to know we havenā€™t forgotten about him and are waiting for him. This sense of family should help him stay away from the bad people in the future, I hope.ā€

Fernandoā€™s sly smirk flashes into my mind and I shiver. If only I could find Alejandro a suitable job once he is outā€¦

As if Nathan can read my thoughts, he furrows his brows and asks, ā€œAre you afraid Alejandro will fall back in with your ex?ā€

ā€œNo, I doubt that. But Ale is a busy bee. He needs constant action and wants to feel useful. I guess thatā€™s how he ended up seeing Fernando and his pals in the first place. Ale was looking for a job and being a well-paid delivery guy to a friend sounded like a dream. If he doesnā€™t get employed soon after heā€™s released, he might decide to search for something in the wrong circles. Believe it or not, our barrio is pretty full of thoseā€¦ā€

My lips twitch as I recall my talk with Abuelita this morning. She urged me to ask Nathan if he knew someone who might hire. I told her I didnā€™t know how Nathan would react when he discovered our familyā€™s situation so she couldnā€™t expect me to beg him for favors after I dropped a my jail/dealer-ex bomb on him.

ā€œDoesnā€™t the correction facility have a reintegration program?ā€ Nathan says.

ā€œYes, but not for detainees with such short sentences as Aleā€™s. My brother will get a parole officer, but I doubt heā€™ll have much help with finding employment. Aleā€™s a smart kid, he always had good grades. But that doesnā€™t mean much with a criminal record. I doubt any good employer would take a gamble on him. Iā€™d hate to see my brotherā€™s talents wasted, but itā€™s a riskā€¦ā€ I stare at my hands.

Nathanā€™s breathing grows heavier. ā€œEva, listen to me. I wonā€™t allow anything to happen to your brother. Iā€™ll see to it that he stays out of trouble. My aunt is well connected. She knows countless humanitarian organizations. We can surely find him a decent job.ā€

ā€œNo, Nathanā€¦I couldnā€™t ask this of youā€¦ā€ I donā€™t want Nathan to think that I would use him or his connections in any way. Itā€™s not what I like in him or want from him.

Then what do you want from him? A small cheeky voice in my head asks as
