The Honorable Freddie started, popeyed, to a sitting posture.
âMy word! Not really?â
His father nodded.
âI say, govânor, you really are a topper! You really are, you know! I know just how you feel about the country and the jolly old birds and trees and chasing the bally slugs off the young geraniums and all that sort of thing, but somehow itâs never quite hit me the same way. Itâs the way Iâm built, I suppose. I like asphalt streets and crowds and dodging taxis and meeting chappies at the club and popping in at the Empire for half an hour and so forth. And thereâs something about having an allowanceâ âI donât knowâ ââ ⊠sort of makes you chuck your chest out and feel youâre someone. I donât know how to thank you, govânor! Youâreâ âyouâre an absolute sportsman! This is the most priceless bit of work youâve ever done. I feel like a two-year-old. I donât know when Iâve felt so braced. Iâ âIâ âreally, you know, govânor, Iâm most awfully grateful.â
âExactly,â said Lord Emsworth. âAhâ âprecisely. But, Freddie, my boy,â he added, not without pathos, âthere is just one thing more. Do you think thatâ âwith an effortâ âfor my sakeâ âyou could endeavor this time not to make aâ âa damned fool of yourself?â
He eyed his offspring wistfully.
âGovânor,â said the Honorable Freddie firmly, âIâll have a jolly good stab at it!â
