—: Chapter 52 :—
Grinning from ear to ear, and feeling relieved and relaxed, I walked out of the Bombshells’ recovery room to let them rest. As for the substantial shame stain on my uniform slacks, a simple MASS extraction had shrunk it to nothing before I’d finished walking out the door. My uniform looked good as new, and I felt the same way.
“Feeling better?” Captain Theia asked. She stood just outside the recovery room with a dozen other nearly-naked Shock Knights.
“Did you—?” I said and thought, see anything? The hatch to the Bombshells’ room had been wide open.
Theia pursed an inscrutable smirk.
“Could you—?” hear anything? By you, I meant Theia and every other Shock Knight, nurse, and doctor who passed by.
Theia arched an enigmatic eyebrow.
“I’m… It was… think of it like maintenance.”
“Maintenance?” Theia smiled cryptically.
“Yeah, preventative maintenance.” I cleared my throat. “Flushing the system. Bleeding the line. Draining the overflow. That sort of thing.”
“I see,” Theia nodded, impossible to read.
“You know what I mean.”
“Perhaps you’d like to demonstrate?” Her full lips curled into a wry smile. She knew.
“Demonstrate what?” I asked, playing dumb.
“You’re becoming increasingly predictable by the minute, my king.”
“What?! It was maintenance!” I hissed quietly, hoping no one else in the corridor heard us, besides the Shock Knights.
Horna, my Nerd Girl assistant, stood at the far end of the line of Shock Knights. She pushed up her eyeglasses and said, “What are you two talking about?”
“Maintenance,” Theia said dryly, her kryptonite eyes glimmering with mirth and locked on mine.
I smirked at Theia, “Every good man knows the importance of preventative maintenance. It keeps everything else running smoothly and prevents breakdowns. Don’t you agree, Captain?”
Theia offered an amused smile but said no more.
If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was enjoying me squirm. As was often the case, my eyes dipped briefly down to Theia’s naked breasts. Her nipples were… straining tight and erect. It wasn’t cold in here. This was a hospital, in the jungle, and Medical was always warmish. My eyes lifted back to Theia’s.
I said, “Are you…?” and thought, turned on?
“No,” she said with firm finality.
It was my turn to smirk. “Tell me the truth, Captain Theia. Are you—?”
“My king!” said Major Akeso as she rounded the corner. “You made it. I’m so glad you’re here. Did you talk to Oia and Venus?”
“Oh, I…” I flicked a final glance at Theia.
She was looking at Major Akeso.
“My king?” Major Akeso said.
“Sorry,” I said. “Yes, I did speak with Oia and Venus.”
“Oh good,” Akeso smiled. “How do they seem to you?”
“Better than when they came in here,” I said, trying to stay positive while shoving down images of Oia’s melted demon face. “Can we talk somewhere, Major? I have some questions about their treatment plan.”
“Yes, definitely, my king.” Major Akeso led me to a small examination room that was empty.
Captain Theia and the Shock Knights followed but remained in the corridor outside while other doctors and nurses came and went.
I said to Akeso, “I’m a little worried about Oia. She doesn’t look good.”
Major Akeso nodded vigorously. She wore the standard doctor’s pink uniform with short red sleeves. Like every Zalaxian uniform, the major’s was tightly tailored. No cleavage-revealing V-cut, but she obviously had an incredible body underneath, and her face was awe-inspiringly beautiful. Like every woman on duty, her hair was tied back in a tight bun. On Major Akeso, it gave her that “girl next door” look, except on her, it was the Hollywood A-list version of the girl next door, the one who did commercials for perfume and shampoo when she wasn’t playing the role of the impossibly hot “girl who got away.”
One other thing about Major Akeso stood out.
She could easily be Venus’ cousin, possibly her sister. I couldn’t decide if that was simply because Venus and Akeso were both hot brunettes with smoldering dark eyes, and both were medical officers, or if they really were that similar. Without Venus in front of me to do a side-by-side comparison, I wasn’t entirely sure. But it made you wonder if they were related or… who knows, genetically engineered? I mean, how else did you account for the fact every woman on Zalaxia was a babe? A question for another time.
I said, “Major, how would you say Oia is doing?”
Akeso offered a compassionate smile, “I know you’re worried about her, my king.”
“I am. She’s…” I didn’t want to say hideous. I didn’t even want to think it, but I’d been intensely shocked by what I’d seen. “Yeah,” I sighed, “I’m worried.”
“My king, with the utmost respect, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah, go ahead.”
“You’re a stranger to Zalaxia, correct?”
“Yeah. I’ve never been here before a few days ago.”
“Are you at all familiar with our medical procedures?”
“Not in the slightest.”
She nodded vigorously, “I want to assure you, my king, Oia’s facial reconstruction is going along smoothly. Her injuries left many of her facial bones fractured and misaligned. Nasal, zygomatic, lacrimal, ethmoid. I had to reposition quite a bit during surgery.”
“Reposition? How did that go?”
“Flawlessly,” she said with complete confidence. “I was able to match everything up exactly with her medical records.”
“Oh good. Wait. Medical records? How does that work?”
“Every woman on Zalaxia has a 3D scan of her DNA down to the molecular level kept on file, and a scan of her adult body down to the cellular level also kept on file.”
“Wow. That’s amazing. Does that include brain scans?”
“For some of the most senior officers and palace concubines, yes.” Akeso did another of her vigorous nods. This woman was all business and 100% on the ball.
“So if something more serious happens to Oia or the others, something involving brain damage, you could what, rebuild
