store or the gas station, Starbucks coffee or Subway sandwiches, wherever I went, I was invisible to women.

With Major Akeso searching my eyes, I could barely form a coherent thought. She was that attractive.

“The choice is yours, my king.”

“What choice?” I’d lost my previous train of thought because Major Akeso’s beauty was hitting me like a tsunami.

“For Cygna’s treatment.”

“Oh, right. Do you think we should be treating her?” I said “we” because I could assist using my two king’s rings. I might even be able to do things Major Akeso and her microservs couldn’t. But that was a last resort. Sure, I had used my Bombshells Ring to heal my broken back, and give Sirius a heart massage while she lay dying on the landing deck after getting stomped by King Sekton, but I was winging it every step of the way. Major Akeso was clearly experienced, knowledgable, and had tech at her fingertips I could only dream of. I said, “Did I make the wrong call leaving Cygna alone?”

Major Akeso looked sideways in the general direction of the Bombshells’ recovery room. “Based on visual observation and verbal reports from my team of nurses—”

“Are they keeping an eye on her? Your nurses?”

“Definitely, my king,” Major Akeso said, almost offended. “If Cygna is in one of my beds, she’s my patient, my responsibility. My staff attends to her basic daily needs. Hydration, caloric intake, urination, defecation, turning her to avoid bed sores, bathing, changing her linens. The basics. If I had sensed her life was in danger, I would have intervened.”

“Okay,” I nodded. “That sounds like what I’d do. Thank you, Major. I mean it. Putting the lives of my friends in your hands isn’t easy. I’m really worried about them. They mean a lot to me. More than I can possibly convey.”

Major Akeso folded her arms under the bust of her pink uniform. She shifted from one foot to the other. Her eyes scrutinized mine more intensely than before. “You’re different.”

“I’m sorry?” I said with a sideways frown.

Akeso closed her eyes and shook her head, again shifting to her other foot like she was anxious. “I meant no offense, my king. It’s just that you’re new and… I’m sorry,” she said, flustered. “I beg your pardon, my king. I spoke without thinking. It’s been so busy around here after that trax attacked the outpost. And then those horrid CyberKnights. It’s been an endless stream of injuries and maladies coming in for treatment ever since. You understand.”

When I didn’t say anything, she started gushing, “And what an amazing job you did stopping that overgrown trax, my king! The way you handled it was, it was astonishing, my king! Very heroic. And those CyberKnights? Everyone is talking about what you did on the other side of the Chaos Gate. It must have been astonishing. So many lives you saved! The work I do is nothing compared to yours, my king. With you here, the women don’t even need me!”

I smirked because Major Akeso had suddenly gone from business professional to professional brown-noser.

“You can stop,” I said.

“Stop what?” she said, mystified.

“Ass kissing.”

“I wasn’t—” She stopped herself abruptly. “Yes, my king.” She nodded vigorously. “I won’t do it again. I am yours to command, my king. My body is your body, my mind your mind. Do with me as you please so that I may please you, my king.” For the first time since we’d started talking, Major Akeso was avoiding eye contact and staring obediently at the floor. Gone was her confidence and any semblance of independence.

“Listen, Major. You don’t need to kiss my ass. I’m not the last king. I’m not going to execute you for talking out of turn. Don’t treat me any different than you would anyone else around here.”

“Yes, my king.” Akeso nodded, but wouldn’t look up from the floor.

“Can you look at me? Please?”

Her eyes flicked between the floor and my face several times, like she was afraid to look at me.

I smiled politely and encouraged, “It’s okay to look at me, Major. I don’t bite.”

Finally, after another dozen nervous eye flicks, her eyes stayed on mine.

“Be yourself,” I said. “Don’t be a Serv. I’m not someone special just because I’m king. I mean acting king. Haven’t even had my coronation yet,” I chuckled. “Anyway, I want your honesty, not an act. Wait, you know what that means, right? An act?”

Akeso nodded minutely, “Yes, my king. I know what an act is.”

“Good. I don’t want one from you. Back to what you were saying. You called me different. What did you mean? And be honest. I don’t need you to bullshit me. Do you know what bullshit means? Never mind. Look, I’ll never be like your last king. From what I’m gathering, that guy was a complete prick. Oh, prick is a euphemism for—”

“Penis, my king,” Akeso nodded. “I know the term.”

“Right,” I grinned. “So, yeah. Different. Why am I different?”

Major Akeso’s eyes darted around the empty recovery room for a few moments. Just when I thought she’d start staring at the floor again, she looked me directly in the eyes. Hers were full of emotion, watering ever so slightly and shimmering in the light. She said, “You care.”

“I… Yeah, I guess I do.”

I also cared about the fact these women seemingly lived in fear of a tyrant who handed out executions like candied hand grenades to kids at a playground. Oooh! This looks yummy! Lick, lick, lick. What happens if I crunch it in my mouth or lick it too long? Ka-BOOM! Red mist.

Out of respect for every woman on Zalaxia, women who were constantly risking their lives to save mine, I would make it my mission to reassure them that speaking their minds was not an automatic death sentence. Nobody deserved to live with the fear of death hanging over their head like a real guillotine.
