He stood on the sidewalk, trying to gather his courage. Tony never thought heâd be afraid to see his sister. He was older and had learned how to survive without approval from his family. Taking a deep breath, he made his way up the walk to the front porch.
He knocked on the door and waited.
âAntonio,â his sister greeted him coolly.
âMaria. Itâs nice to see you.â He didnât try to enter the house.
âI can see your family means so much to you that itâs taken you a week to come.â
She crossed her arms and glared at him.
âNo one is dying and I wished to spend Thanksgiving with family.â There wasnât any way he would apologize.
âAh yes. Luis told me about those two gringos you live with. Are they your boyfriends, Antonio?â Her disgust and scorn dripped like venom in her words.
âStop right there, Maria Mendoza. I havenât come here to let you pass judgment on my friends or me. I didnât come for you. Iâd be more than happy to go back to Wyoming and forget I ever had family in Texas.â
No guilt. It had taken three years after he ran away before he stopped feeling guilty because he was gay. He wouldnât allow his sister to take him back into his old ways.
âMama, whoâs this?â
Tony turned to see a tall good-looking teenager standing at the bottom of the porch steps. His heart skipped a beat. If this was Juan and he was gay, the boy would have to beat the men off with a stick when he was older.
âYou must be Juan. Iâm your Tio Antonio.â Tony held out his hand. He wasnât sure what Maria might have told his nephew about him, so he didnât expect Juan to actually shake his hand.
âTio Tony?â A bright smile broke over the young manâs face. Juan bounded up the step, ignored Tonyâs hand and hugged him. âTia Elena said you were coming for a visit.
Are you staying at her place?â
âYes. At least for a little while.â Tony hugged his nephew.
âJuan, go inside and do your homework.â Mariaâs voice was frigid now.
âBut I want to talk to Tio Tony,â Juan protested.
âMaybe later. Iâll be here for a week or so.â Tony clapped the boyâs shoulder.
âGreat.â Juan smiled. The teenager kissed his motherâs cheek as he went by her.
Tony waited until his nephew was out of hearing range. âDo you want me to talk to him or not?â
âIâm not sure itâd be a good idea to let you into his life. Juanâs a good boy, Antonio.
I donât want you influencing him.â
âYou mean seducing him to the dark side. Donât worry about that, sis. I wouldnât dream of corrupting him.â Tony turned to leave, but something made him stop and look back at Maria. âPlease, promise me, youâll love him no matter what. Donât make him have to choose between you and his happiness.â
Maria shut the door in his face. Tony sighed and headed towards the rental car. Why had he come home? Heâd known it was a stupid thing to do, yet deep inside, heâd hoped things had changed. Judging by his sisterâs attitude, they hadnât changed at all.
âTio Tony.â
Looking up, he saw Juan standing beside his car. He glance back to see if Maria could see them.
âDonât worry. Sheâs on the phone, arguing with Tia Angelina.â Juan shifted nervously.
âWonât she be angry with you for talking to me?â Tony didnât want to get Juan in trouble with his mom.
âIâll be back inside before theyâre done. Can we talk?â
âThatâs what Iâm here for. Come see me at Tia Elenaâs.â Tony rummaged around his rental car, finding a piece of paper and a pen. He scribbled down his cell number. âCall me before you come over.â
âMuchas gracias, Tio Tony.â Juan tucked the paper in his pocket. âTia Elena said I should talk to you.â
âYea, well, Iâll be glad to help, but I donât want to cause problems for you. As you can see, Iâm not very popular around here,â Tony gestured at the houses surrounding them.
His nephew shrugged. âThere were problems before you came. I should go. Iâll call you tomorrow.â
He watched Juan jog back to the house. His nephewâs tone told him everything wasnât perfect in paradise. Heâd have to wait until tomorrow to find out why.
Later that night, Tony settled on his auntâs couch with a beer and the remote. Heâd flipped on a basketball game when his cell phone rang. Toby Keithâs â Should Have Been a Cowboyâ blared out.
âHey there, Les.â He grinned as he leaned back against the cushions.
âTony. Howâs old home week going?â Lesâ drawl held laughter.
âWhy didnât you tie me up and refuse to let me come down here?â He scrubbed a hand over his face. âI donât know why I thought this would be a good idea.â
âBecause if what your ass of a brother-in-law says is right, you donât want your nephew going through the same crap you did.â
Les was right. Tony didnât want to risk Juan feeling like the entire world hated him, which was the reason why Tony took off all those years ago.
âYouâre right as usual. Doesnât Randy ever get tired of your perfection,â he teased.
Les chuckled. âRandy loves me, so heâs blind to my faults. You better not try to open his eyes to them either.â
âI wouldnât want to disillusion the kid. Couldnât stand to see him disappointed.â
âWe agree on that.â Lesâ words held a fond tone to them.
A voice spoke in the background.
Lesâ voice was muffled and then he came back on to tell Tony, âPeter needs me to sign some checks. Iâll have Randy call you tomorrow evening.â
âGreat.
