Eowyn's Rescue

(Part 1)

Far, far away in the deep forest lived a cream colored feline. She went by the name Eowyn. She was active, playful and very friendly to all other creatures in the forest.

One day Eowyn was playing in the forest with her best friend Squirly, the squirrel who lived in a willow tree. They ran along the river bank playing tag, hide-n-seek and climbed up the tallest tree they ever had seen. The two jumped from branch to branch chasing one another, until Squirly decided to run down the tree with no difficulty at all. When Squirly reached the ground she glanced up to see Eowyn sitting on the thickest and highest branches, and called out.

“Come on Eowyn. Why are you still up there?”

Eowyn glanced down and realised how high she was. She was too scared to climb down and it was too high to jump. She didn’t know what to do. Eowyn felt stuck and was afraid she would never feel the ground beneath her paws again.

“What’s the matter?” Asked Squirly.

“I’m scared.” Replied Eowyn.

“Can’t you climb down like I did?”

“No, it’s too high. I can only climb up, but climbing down is difficult for me.”

“Cats are not supposed to be afraid of heights, are they? I always thought cats like being in high places like we do.”

“We do, but not when it’s this high.”

“Then why did you climb up then?” Asked a curious Squirly

“Because I like climbing, and I didn’t want you to think I’m a Scaredy Cat, which I am now.”

“Is there anyone I can get to help?”

“Well, I dunno. Torti can’t climb, neither could Mr. Howl the wolf.”

“What about Mr. Sly?”

“Mr. Sly? How can he help?”

“Well, he’s long and thick and you can use him as a rope to climb down. As long as he is not hungry, of course.”

“Uh uh, I don’t want to take that risk.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I wouldn’t want to either.”

“Then why would you suggest such a thing?”

“I don’t know. It was silly of me to think he can help.”

“Well, not completely. I can see how you thought he can help, but at the same time I don’t want to be dinner.”

Squirly and Eowyn then heard a snap of a twig nearby and stood quietly to listen. Both glanced over to see where the sound was coming from and saw a human walking on the path through forest. Eowyn then meowed.

“It’s a human. Maybe, she can help me.”

“But if we get her to help, she may take my best friend away forever, and I will never see you again.”

“Don’t worry, when she gets me down, I will squirm out of her hands and jump off and run away so she can’t catch me.

“Okay, I guess we can try.” Squirly replied with hesitation. ‘At the same time I don’t want Eowyn to be stuck up there forever.’ Thought Squirly.

Squirly then ran in the path of the human and stood on her hind legs. Once she got the human’s attention she turned and ran to Eowyn, but the human only tried to get Squirly attention with a handful of peanuts. As much as Squirly wanted the peanuts she knew she had to get help for Eowyn. Squirly then thought of an idea to get the human to follow her. She turned her head toward the direction where Eowyn sit waiting and began chirping.

“Eowyn, meow as loud as you can, so the human can hear you.”

“Okay.” Eowyn then let out her loudest meow.”

“Keep meowing.”

Eowyn continued meowing until the human turned and left the path, following the direction of the meows. The human glanced up into the trees and saw the cream colored cat sitting on a branch.

“Oh, hello there. Aren’t you a Cutie. Do you need help getting down?” The human said with a soft feminine voice.

“MEOW!”

“Okay, I’m coming up. Don’t worry, I’ll get you down. After all, I am a pretty good climber.”

“Meow!” Cried Eowyn

Squirly waited patiently on the ground as the woman climbed up the tree and reached for Eowyn with one hand. She then set Eowyn unto her shoulders and descended down the tree. Just as they reached the ground and Eowyn found it safe to jump she lunged off the woman’s shoulders and ran with Squirly following close behind.
