I was the prey
He was the hunter
Tracking me, intensely focused
In the dark of night
He trapped me, looking into my soul
I froze, staring into his emptiness
I had thought he was loving tenderness
He disguised well he was just an animal
With perfect timing he leaped upon me
Tearing at my throat
Shutting off my screams
Tearing at my heart to leave me
Broken, barely breathing, ravaged
Horribly eviscerated, forever terrified
Satiated by my blood
He arrogantly walked away
Never looking back
At the mangled mess he’d made
He cleaned and preened
Satisfied for now
Until he cornered his next victim
To feed voraciously again.
I hid in this grotesque body
Swearing to never trust again
Some stared horrified
Others pretended I wasn’t there
Safe from the world around me
I hid in my hideousness
You found me wandering
Acted blind to my deformities
Stared deep into my frightened eyes
What you saw in this battered flesh
I could not guess
Trust you I would not
But you persisted, treating me gently
Your quiet words of reassurance
Slowly softening my resistance
Never hesitated to be by my side
Bringing me out disheveled, dirty
Hair matted, hiding my face
To show me the beauty around
Cleansing me in your love
You laid treasures at my feet
Valued me as a precious gift
Clothing me in silk
All who saw me did not recognize me
Wondered at this beauty you had found
For all his clawing
Digging and ravaging
He was not able to get the last morsel
The love that shines in my eyes
For you alone
Released from the bounty
I had locked in my mangled heart
