Dark Evenings

I was on my way home and instantly before me
darkness descended softly like a velvet curtain.
Without the light even the plants took on ghoulish shapes.
The trees came alive with giant hands hanging down
with dark bony fingers reaching down to seize
me.

The night brought strange sounds now magnified , causing me to imagine dreadful things and quicken my pace.
I tried to be light on my feet but the earth screamed, giving me away.
Every step was amplified as the decaying leaves were crushed .

What waited for me around the next corner?
Just then I felt something strange around my ankles
fear gripped me I just wanted to break free and run.
There down on the ground was some kind of a rope.
Perhaps something a child had played with
earlier in the day and neglected pick up and to put away.
I let out a sigh of relief knowing I could explain the foreign object.

Home seemed so far away and promising myself once
again not to repeat this terrifying stroll.
I could see the wrought iron gate and I gave a sigh of relief then out of the corner of my eye a black shadowy figure appeared.

My body started shivering as I realize I never made it past this point.
I would not be going through the gate or ever going home again.
