I AM NOT A MISTAKE


From the time I was born, my grandma called me blessed

A little infant burning with constant fevers she would lay me on her chest

The product of two unwed teenagers during the early sixties

When it was frowned upon and the girl was quickly sent away to the boonies

My grandma never considered sending my mother anywhere!

Instead she said, “If you don’t want to marry, I will help you with all of your baby’s care”

She told my mother to hold her head up high

Don’t let anyone make you feel ashamed or cause you to cry

You and your baby will still wear the best clothes money can buy

Just like you always did because we are all the apple of God’s merciful eye

Look at that cute little baby boy many would smile and say

My mother would pull off my tiny hat and say, “It’s a girl, see the single strand of hair on her head sway?”

The phone rings it’s my father’s mother in Virginia asking my mother to send me down

Because I was the first and only Jones granddaughter around

She said she wanted to raise me because she was tired of raising all boys

My mother’s mother said, “She will never get my first grandchild she is our little joy!”

I’m school age now and the teachers called me gifted and talented

I was extremely advanced in the math and sciences

Awards for this and several more awards for that

It came so easy to me because God and I would often chat

Graduated early from high school and even college three times

By the time I was twenty, the world of careers were all mine

I received offers from many major corporations in different states

So many that I didn’t know which ones to contemplate

I lived in Georgia, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin and Detroit too

Until the Lord said my work on the road was just about through

I passed the torch of success to those in my family behind me

And prayed that I was a good role model for all to see

Now several have completed college since my initial journey

My nephews, sisters, brothers and other family

See, my life has served a purpose, for many people’s lives I’ve touched

Although I really can’t take the credit for accomplishing so much

One thing I can say for sure, I AM NOT A MISTAKE!

Because the good Lord has plans for everyone HE makes
