I see her.
Her bottom lip quivers
And her dark hair
Falls in front of her face.
Beneath the oak tree,
She screams.
They gather,
One by one,
Until she has the crowd
She wants
But doesn’t say so.
I don’t follow the rest.
I stay behind
And watch from a distance.
She screams.
They bow to her,
And beg.
They’re dying
To know.
She screams.
But doesn’t say why.
Days,
Months,
Years,
Pass.
She doesn’t stop screaming.
I plaster a smile,
But she looks into my eyes.
She’s seen those eyes
In the mirror.
She knows,
But doesn’t tell.
Just nods
And her curls
Cover her face
Once again.
She screams.
Lights flash.
Blue and red.
Wood breaks
As uniformed beings
Take the screamer
To a safe heaven.
They see,
The purple and black,
On her cheek
And the scar
On her soul.
I watch,
And listen.
Terrible.
Awful.
Sad.
Disturbing.
Words,
They throw around.
They don’t know.
They don’t see.
They don’t feel.
She doesn’t have to scream
Anymore.
But she does.
I know why.
She’s afraid
If she stops
She’ll go back.
And I watch,
And listen.
She knows my secret
That I wish I could tell.
She knows
The tears
Won’t come anymore.
She knows
I’m completely empty.
She knows
What they do to me.
Like they did to her.
But she won’t tell.
It’s not her time to scream
Anymore.
It’s mine.
But my tongue
Has been cut off.
And what I want,
And need,
Won’t come.
So instead
I watch
And listen
And plaster a smile
Upon
My
Face.
