Animal Spirit

(A poem to honor animals both great and small)


Slinking through the tangled undergrowth of the jungle,
I am the jaguar that hunts its prey.
Soaring through azure skies,
I am the bird that sees the bigger picture.
Cackling maniacally,
I am the hyena with a wild disposition of cold malice.
Hunter of the night,
I am the wolf, the teacher of innate wisdom.

Bird of song and color,
I am the songbird who sings glorious melodies to inspire thee.
Eyes of mischief and trickery,
I am the fox who is forever following at your tail.
Protector of cubs and her young,
I am the fierce she-bear who guards her babies with her very life.
Roaring something dangerous,
I am the lion who states his ferocity and strength within.

Howler of the silvery moon,
I am the coyote who wails a mournful tune.
Sleeping on one foot while standing up,
I am the pink flamingo that catches your eye as you are drawn to my radiant coloring.
Swimming calmly through the pond of my habitat,
I am the ever graceful swan of beauty and elegance.
Protecting what is mine,
I am the tiger who shows no fear.

Digging earthy tunnels in fields of gold,
I am the prairie dog who scurries through the dirt and makes their home underground.
Cracking open my tasty acorn,
I am the squirrel who is ever inquisitive.
Giver of nourishment and milk,
I am the cow who nurtures and grazes lazily in green meadows.
Stamping the ground with my hoof,
I am the bull who snorts at any adversary to show them who is superior.

Mingling amongst the flowers,
I am the hummingbird of tiny proportions, living a life of joy and one who is carefree, loving life as I go about the day.
Flitting along on a summer's day,
I am the butterfly of transformation and change, a gentle soul I am.
Hooting in the dark of night,
I am the wise owl sitting ever yonder in that tree branch, staring into one's soul with my piercing gaze.
Portent of magic and mystery,
I am the raven who dares to show one the journey of secrets ever hidden.

Long neck stretching ever high,
I am the giraffe as I aim for the best in life, grazing the treetops and seeing far and wide across the horizon.
Through the salty waters I go,
I am the fish of movement and adventure.
Loyal friend who stays by your side always,
I am the dog who sticks with you through thick and thin.
Circling round the desolate valleys,
I am the vulture of death omens and feeding on what remains, predator bird I am.

I am all this and many more,
I am one who is full of dynamic personalities, intrigue and complexities,
With the basic desires and the fight or flight instincts
I am the spirit of animals both great and small,
the call of the wild and the beast within.
