Les Pigeons de Salobreña

 

 

Le vent, le ciel, la terre et la mer se confondent,

Et sans honte et sans gêne au-dessus des murs blancs,

Parmi les hirondelles narguant les courants,

Les pigeons se demandent, se perdent, se fondent.

 

“Coucourou” “Coucourou”, immobiles, rêveurs,

S'aggripent insouciants au rocher de la Vie,

S'élancent en cadence où mèment leur envie

Où dorment les maisons, où chantent les pêcheurs,

 

Pas de miettes de pain jeté, pas de dédain

Les vieilles en habit se tiennent par la main

Et d'une farandole elles font leur chemin.

 

“Adió” “Coucourou” font une mélodie

Qui ondule et s'étend sur le sable endormi

Tandis que les pigeons observent assoupis...

O blithe New-comer! I have heard,

I hear thee and rejoice.

O Cuckoo! shall I call thee Bird,

Or but a wandering Voice?

 

While I am lying on the grass

Thy twofold shout I hear;

From hill to hill it seems to pass,

At once far off, and near.

 

Though babbling only to the Vale

Of sunshine and of flowers,

Of visionary hours.

 

Thrice welcome, darling of the Spring!

Even yet thou art to me

No bird, but an invisible thing,

A voice, a mystery;

In bush, and tree, and sky.

 

To seek thee did I often rove

Through woods and on the green;

And thou wert still a hope, a love;

Still longed for, never seen.

 

And I can listen to thee yet;

O blessèd Bird! the earth we pace
