PROLOGUE
It was a very ghastly night. Rain poured from the high above, soaking everything in its path.
The cloud had taken a black mask and in the middle of all that, a scream of a poor soul tore through the night like a sword through skin leaving a trail in its wake. The mountains shook with its sheer ferocity.
Everything but the sky and the castle atop of the mountain was quiet. They were both glowing, one with the bolts of lightning and other with torches and candles.
A second scream broke through the night sky and echoed eerily. It chilled the bones of the ones who heard it.
“Congratulations my lady, you are blessed with a baby girl.” A woman dressed in all white said. Her eyes glowed in the dim light of the candles at the sight in her hands. She was highly in demand among the royals as the delivery lady or so they called her.
Never in her entire life, had she laid her eyes upon such a beautiful baby, which was something to be said with as much deliveries as she had performed for nearly fifty years.
She would have thought it was a reincarnation of an angel if she had not known better.
She stepped forward gently placing the princess in her queen’s quivering hands. She had no doubt that her queen was the bravest of all she had ever seen.
The queen’s frail body trembled, masked with sweat and blood as she took her daughter in her hand. There was not much energy left in her fragile body nevertheless she secured her daughter in the crook of her arm.
She tried to talk but her whole being ached, her face contorted from the pain.
“My.. Ah, My Nasya.” She loathed her vision which blurred her child’s profile from all the tears in her eyes.
She had to see her daughter for as much time as she had left on the face of the earth. Her brows furrowed at the squeeze she got on her shoulder from the man she loved the most but now was on the second position in the league.
“Our child, my dear.” He tried to sound reassuring but she knew him like the back of her palm. The distress in his voice was unmistakable.
Until the very end, he had tried to put some sense into her mind. Until the end, he had tried to convince to drop her child, to kill it, but to no avail.
She shook her head at the thought, in her mind.
“For the love of god ah..t-take care of our ch..child just as much as our kingdom. She’s the most precious…ah,” each word she uttered was an effort.
“Please, don’t stress yourself. I’ll do everything in my power for the souvenir of our love.” He caressed his wife’s cheek, his eyes burning with unshed tear. The love of his life was sacrificing her life for what..a monster? Life had never been so cruel on him.
He was born in royalty just like his wife. Their parents married them when they were just in cribs. He loved her even before he knew the meaning of that one word. They lived happily for a decade. They kingdom was on the epitome of prosperity so no one ever dared to challenge them. And now everything was falling apart and the king of most prosperous kingdom was helpless in the entryway of death.
What had he done wrong?
He had no clue and neither time.
Though, he would keep the promise. He would nurture this creature.
He shook his head, focusing on her with all the love from the heaven. She was a real gem. She wholeheartedly accepted the creature they abhorred for years.
The beasts of Black Magic.
His armed forces used to kill them at any chance. Various torture methods were used in the witch-hunt. At the end they were burned at the stake where all the villagers used to shower them with stones till they turned to ashes. Some were easier to kill than others. Some were so beautiful that they looked like angels until they showed their elongated incisors and growled at people.
He couldn’t quite contain the jumble of emotions as all the hell broke loose.
Why it had to be her?
Why always the good die young?
He would give his life if it meant he could save hers.
What horrible sins he had committed in his past life to have a fate like this?
There’s nothing left than watching his beautiful, loving wife take her last breath in front of his wide open eyes. Nothing other than the shattering of his heart.
At last he believed life isn’t fair. Neither for a prince nor pauper.
He closed his eyes to work the shudder out of his body at the thought. It’s the-
“aargh..” The queen started gasping for precious air. The more she breathed in the emptier her lungs felt.
The time has come. She thought as her husband ordered one of the maid to take the child from her hand in an attempt to get her back to rest.
“No.. no.” Her whole being screamed. She wanted her child in her hand when she took her last breath. They couldn’t make her do otherwise.
“My queen, forgive me. You’re weak. Let me take the baby.” He crooned as her grip loosened a little from the baby.
She didn’t know how but she felt a little assured by his words. She thought he would never get rid of his fear.
But here he is, trying to make this better.
She put her hand on her child’s head as her husband cradled her.
Just once, just once she wanted to look in Nasya’s eyes. She wanted to stay locked in them for forever.
The baby hadn’t been crying when she came to this world nor she had opened her eyes.
They would have thought the worse if not for the pulse running through her or the fate she had born with.
Isn’t she dead from the start? The queen thought incredulously.
The irony hasn’t escaped her.
Every time her hand made contact with Nasya’s warm pale skin, she looked at her willing her to open her baby eyes.
The queen’s breath launched in her throat as the little Nasya’s reaction made it clear that she knows who her mother is.
All people in the room let out a wail at the sight of their queen’s hand falling with a smile on her face as the journey to the heaven began with her eyes forever locked in her babies…RED eyes.
