Chapter One

"No, I don't wanna wake up. Not yet."
"Come on. Open your eyes."
"Five more minutes, Dad. Please! Five more."
"No more minutes. Open those eyes and look at me."
Suddenly she realized that the voice urging her to wake up didn't belong to her father. And besides, she hadn't lived at home in over ten years.
"Come on. Look at me."
It took some effort, but she managed to open her eyes, a little. Light. Swirling light. A pain pounded in her head. She closed her eyes back tight for a moment and then tried again. This time there was a blurred face in the light. She blinked a few times and the face slowly came into focus. A man's face.
"That's it. Blue eyes. Some how I just knew they would be blue."
She blinked a few more times, trying to fight the pain and a wave of nausea. At least she had a handsome man to watch while she did. She glanced up at the mystery man in question, eyes narrowed against a lights' glare.
His features softened when he saw her look up. His hair lay right above his brow in carmel-brown curls and his eyes were the same denim blue as hers. Suddenly she felt the crazy urge to run her fingers through his hair. He had such beautiful hair! Now her thoughts swirled around in her head, mixing and passing through each other like the goo in a lava lamp.
"Ugh.." She moaned, closing her eyes and pressing her fingers to her head. She opened her eyes again. She was almost too curious to be in pain. "What's your name?" The girl asked. He smiled a dazzling smile and clasped her hand.
"I'll take that as a good sign. I'm Collin." She smiled and then frowned. "Good sign?" His smile slipped. "I didn't really want to be the one to say this, but....." he paused. She squeezed his hand, hard. "What?" "You've been in the hospital for a month." Her mind blanked for a second and then every detail of the crash exploded in her head.
The noise. The flash of light. Her vision darkening. The illusion that she could hear the very foundations of the car bending. The glass breaking.
She blinked and the hospital room rushed back. She clutched his hand harder and took a deep breath. She felt the perspiration dotting her forehead. It was over, but not for her mind.
"When am I getting out of here, Collin?" She liked the sound of his name on her lips, but he hesitated and she tensed. "Not for another three weeks." She sighed and nodded, as if she had been expecting an answer like that. “Do know your name?” he asked suddenly. For a second the girl found this a weird question and she opened her mouth to answer him anyway, but then she found she had no answer. She started to panic and she clutched Collin’s hand as tight as she could. But then her mind cleared and she spoke up. “Kayla.” Collin nodded and smiled at the girl in the hospital bed.
Her hair was messy and had obviously not been washed since the accident, but Collin could still see the hint of her orange-flamed hair beneath the dirt. All the little bits of glass had been removed of course, from the crash, but he watched as she ran her fingers through her hair a little nervously.
