“Let me tell you a story. Ok?”
My memory flashes back to me walking down the hallway in our school. I was holding a lot of books.
“There was this girl, and she was a hopeless romantic, you know?”
In my memory I look up and see this boy, Damon, walking from the opposite side of the hall, he looks up and smiles at me. I get pulled out of my memory by Damon’s hand rubbing mine.
“Always looking for love in all the wrong places… But she remained optimistic. And then, one day, she noticed this boy. They always kinda knew each other, but they never really noticed each other, you know?”
The next thing I know I’m in my memory again, but on a different day. I walk to the steps of my school and I see Damon fighting with this boy that is twice his size.
“So, she saw this guy and he… was such a bad boy. He constantly got in fights, and he was always in trouble. He was mean and just… real tough. “
I remember looking at Damon and he turned and looked at me. He looked at me with his beautiful eyes that I never realized he had before. I loved being with Damon or even just looking at him. We started to talk to each other more and more. Before I knew it I started to like him and we made plans to go out to a movie. I remember Damon putting his arm around me and my heart feeling like it was going to bounce out of my chest.
“The two were completely wrong for each other, but somehow, she fell completely in love with him. And then they started toward fate… And, sure enough, he fell in love, too.”
The next memory I had of Damon was the two of us lying on my couch, laughing. No need for television or music. He was in my arms and I was in his. That was all we needed.
“Then, one day, he let her in. He let his into her world. And she found where this vicious attitude came from. He was simply a broken soul… But then, she found something else. She found a part of this guy that no one – not even him – knew he possessed. And this part of him – it was sweet, and kind, and caring, and funny, and smart, and absolutely adorable. And he began to come out of his shell, and turn over a new leaf.”
As I said that reality hit me. I realized where I was. Who I was and what was happening. So I continued with my story but got on to the part both of us didn’t want to hear.
“But then, one day, his girlfriend – she got sick, and it took a toll on the both of them. And the boy crawled right back on up into his shell. This boy got into more fights just so he had a way of getting the pain out.”
I looked down and saw that my hand had slid away from his while I was telling this but Damon didn’t want to interrupt me during it so I put my hand back in his. I looked up and saw Damon crying. His eyes were puffy and red and he looked like he couldn’t bare it anymore.
“Baby, why you crying? Don’t hide away anymore. Baby, this is love. Nothing… nothing can stop this. We’re too strong.’ You hear me, babe? We’re too strong for anything to stop us. You’re strong, baby. You’re strong… And you know what happened next, babe?”
I took my pink bow out of my hair and I tied it around Damon’s belt.
“Baby, I can’t take your bow. You always wear it…,” Damon said. It was the first time I heard him speak today since he came into my room at the hospital.
“You need to take it. Now you will have something to remember me by. Ok, Damon? You’re gonna be fine. We’re going to be fine.”
Damon looked into my eyes slowly and said, “Lea, promise me something. Promise me that we will get through this. Because…because…
“Baby, we can get through this and we will...I promise you and as long as you have that ribbon on…you... I mean we will be together forever. “I said interrupting him.
“I will stay here with you until you get better Lea,” Damon said.
“I know you will baby.” I grab Damon’s hand and he starts to cry again.
“What did we do to deserve this? This shouldn’t be happening to us…why?”
I turned to him and said, “Damon...Look at me. This isn’t a matter of who did what and who deserves what… this is just something that I have had since I was born. There is nothing that we can do but sit here and love each other and hope that our love will pull us through this…because I know it will baby our love is too strong.
“I don’t want to loose you baby. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“You won’t loose me you always have me in your heart.”
Damon looked down at his hands and looked back at me and said, “Lea, what happened to us a couple of months ago we were just strangers in the hall but now…but now…”
“But now we are no longer strangers we are two people who are in love and in this world love is the only thing that we have. We only have love.”
“Lea, the best and most beautiful things cannot be seen or touched-they must be felt through the heart. I heard this quote when I was younger but I didn’t know what it meant but ever since I met you the meaning has been clear. I have wanted to tell you that for a long time but I’ve never found the right time.”
I started to feel like I couldn’t breathe anymore but I looked at Damon and with my last breathe I said, “This is the perfect time Damon. I love you.”
“I love you too baby. Forever and always!”
I looked at Damon and suddenly everything went dark……
