A Modified Tale of Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest.  Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood.

One morning, Little Red Riding Hood asked her mother if she could go to visit her grandmother as it had been awhile since they'd seen each other.

"That's a good idea," her mother said.  So they packed a nice basket for Little Red Riding Hood to take to her grandmother.

When the basket was ready, the little girl put on her red cloak and kissed her mother goodbye.

As she walked, admiring the flowers growing on the sides of the path, she saw a little black shadow further along the path. As she walked closer, she could see that it was a little wolf cub stuck in a ditch. She immediately ran over to the cub and picked him up, placing him back on the path. She gave him a few pieces of bread from the basket she was carrying and scratched him behind the ears. The little cub licked her cheek gratefully and started to play with Little Red Riding Hood. After a long time of playing, Little Red Riding Hood stood up to leave because she knew she needed to get to her grandmother’s, and watched as the little cub wandered off.

After she got back home from her visit to her grandmother’s, she told her mother about the fun time she had with the little wolf. Her mother warned her about how dangerous wolves were and that the wolf could have eaten her, even though she was kind to him, and made Little Red Riding Hood promise to never speak to a wolf again.

Years passed as the cub and Little Red Riding Hood began to grow up. Although Red Riding Hood did not know it, the wolf always watched her back, for he believed that the only way he could repay her kindness was to watch over her and help her if she ever encountered trouble, just as she did for him.

One day, Red Riding Hood was preparing for her journey to her grandmother’s, for her grandmother had gotten very ill. With the wolf watching her back as always, she set off to see her grandmother.

Along the road, she encountered a wolf she had never seen before, who asked her where she was going. Forgetting the promise she made to her mother years ago, she told him about her journey as they walked along the road. Meanwhile, the wolf saw the wolf Red Riding Hood was talking to and recognized him, for he was his brother. But when he glanced up again, he saw his brother walking off, waving goodbye to Red Riding Hood. Shrugging, the wolf trailed behind Red Riding Hood as they walked towards grandmother’s house.

When Red Riding Hood got to her grandmother’s house, she knocked on the door and went in.

When Red Riding Hood entered, she could barely recognize her Grandmother. She didn’t realize that her grandmother had been replaced by a wolf, the wolf’s brother.

“Hello, darling!” The wolf’s brother said in a squeaky voice.

"Grandmother!  Your voice sounds so odd.  Is something the matter?" she asked.

"Oh, I just have a touch of a cold," squeaked the wolf adding a cough at the end to prove the point.

"But Grandmother!  What big ears you have," said Little Red Riding Hood as she edged closer to the bed.

"The better to hear you with, my dear," replied the wolf.

"But Grandmother!  What big eyes you have," said Little Red Riding Hood.

"The better to see you with, my dear," replied the wolf.

"But Grandmother!  What big teeth you have," said Little Red Riding Hood her voice quivering slightly.

"The better to eat you with, my dear," roared the wolf and he leaped out of the bed and began to chase the little girl.

Almost too late, Little Red Riding Hood realized that the person in the bed was not her Grandmother, but a hungry wolf.

She ran across the room, shouting, "Help! Wolf!" as loudly as she could.

The wolf ran into the house.

A hunter who was shooting deer nearby heard her cry and ran towards the house as fast as he could.

The wolf immediately stood in front of Red Riding Hood and yelled at his brother.

“Stop!” The wolf shouted.

“What are you doing, brother?” The brother of the wolf asked. “Are you choosing her over me, your brother? You are a disgrace to our kind!”

The wolf clawed at his brother, outraged at what he said. His brother slowly fell to the floor, bleeding from all the scars his brother created.

Suddenly there was a loud gunshot.

The wolf dropped to the floor, hit by the bullet the hunter shot.

Red Riding Hood knelt on the floor, tears streaming down her face, and asked the wolf a question.

“Why did you save me?”

“Why, you saved me when I was a cub, remember?” The wolf smiled. “I hope I have repaid for your kindness…”

Red Riding Hood sobbed as the hunter carried the bodies away, for they were his prizes now.
