The Promise

The morning sunlight trickled in from a small crack between the blue curtains, caressing my face with just enough brightness to disturb my sleep. I blinked a few times before stretching my body and rolling over to face my handsome boyfriend. He was already awake and staring at the ceiling in a contemplative manner.

"Morning!" I murmured, my voice still slightly raspy from sleep. He turned his head to face me and smiled subtly, his blue eyes shining contently at me.

"Morning, sleepyhead!" He replied, pulling me closer to him. "How'd you sleep?"

"Really well, actually. I think I like it when you sleep in my bed." I said. "How about you?"

"Not well. I had a terrible nightmare."

"What about?"

"Will you make me a promise?"

"I'm not going to make fun of you if it was about something silly, I swear."

"No, not that."

"I won't tell anyone, either!"

"No. I want you to promise me that no matter what happens, you won't leave me here by myself." He looked at me seriously. I furrowed my brows. "You and your family are all I've got, don't take that away from me."

"I will, as long as you promise me the same thing."

"Thank you. I feel a lot better now."

"What happened in your nightmare?"

"I couldn't understand a lot of it, but the last part I did. You shot yourself because your mom and dad died in a car accident."

"John, I would never do something like that, especially to you. Life is too short already."

"Good. Did you have any dreams?"

"I walked around at a fair and you won me a stuffed banana. Does that count?"

"Of course! That sounds much better than mine. In fact, lets go to the Halloween fair tonight!"

"Will you win me a stuffed banana?"

"I'll try my absolute hardest!"

"You'd better!" I joked, faking a stern look. We shared a laugh and soon got up because the promise of bacon and pancakes was too enticing.

A Day at the Fair

"John, look! You can win me a banana there!" I giggled.

"If there's bananas there I'll definitely win one for you. But wait until after we get some refreshment!" He pulled me in to him by wrapping an arm around my waist and gently tugging me close. I leaned my head against his shoulder and smiled contentedly as we made our way to the nearest food stand for some frozen lemonades.

"Okay." I sighed happily.

"Two medium frozen lemonades please!" John said to the salesperson and handed them the money.

Epilogue

"Miss Castro, you are very much pregnant!" Smiled the happy doctor.

"N-No, I can't be..." What I said was barely audible.

"3 months in a week or so." She confirmed with another sickly sweet smile.

"Oh, oh my god. Why me?" I spoke after burying my face in my hands.

"Pregnancy is very much a blessing, I assure you. Although each bundle is a lot of hard work, it's very rewarding." The doctor looked lovingly at her swollen stomach and back up at me.

"I didn't mean to offend you, it's just... I'm afraid my circumstances are a little different than yours."

"The last visit here you told me that you and your boyfriend were completely solid and that you heard him on the phone talking about engagement rings?"

"That was 3 and a half months ago."

"What's changed? You're not separated, are you?"

"He proposed on Halloween."

"That's wonderful! Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!"

"Except he was shot in the corn maze because some asshole drug dealer mistook him for someone else." I said, and burst into tears shortly after.

"Oh,
