Chapter One
Kandice
“Get your lazy butt out of bed!” My mother yelled from downstairs. I heard pans and pots being thrown about, and a few curse words here in there. She must have had a rough night and all since she works night shifts at the hospital. But still, no matter how grumpy she was, it was a lovely thing to here her voice in the morning. Even when I wished I could cut her vocal cords out sometimes. My mother could be such a pain at times. She was in here middle thirties, and had short red hair that curled off at the ends. Her eyes were hazel with hints of blue around the sides. What can I say..
She was beautiful
As for my physical appearance? I just so happened to get stuck with my dad’s straight thick, brown hair, and eyes. They weren’t even attractive, just a pale blue that clashed with my tan skin. But hey, I was happy that I got his looks, but when I was seven he died, leaving behind my mother and I. This led to her hatred towards me, since I resembled him so much.
I heard my door being slammed opened, and to my surprise stood my mother. She was seeping with anger. I seriously thought she was about to go hulk smash on me.
“Kandice.” She said, gripping my door handle tightly. I buried my head deeper into my pillow.
“What do you want, old hag?” I didn’t mean that.
I could hear her breathing get heavier. “Kandice! How dare you call me that, you’re just like your father. Lazy and Disrespectful.” Great, I thought. You would bring dad into this. I leaned up, turning in the direction of my mother and completely ignoring her comment.
“So.” I stretched the word out, “Why are you in my room? It’s Saturday, you know. The day where kids get to sleep in all day and not get woken up by their parents. That day, which you are depriving me of at this moment.” I said harshly, narrowing my eyes at her, “So what do you need?”
My mother furiously ran a hand threw her short hair and sighed, “Okay, look. I apologize for interrupting your sleep. But I need you to get ready; we need to go to town.
“Why would we need to do that?” I questioned.
“Just get dressed for goodness sakes.” I huffed and climbed up from my bed heading to my closet, while my mom ran back down stairs.
I grabbed a long sleeve; blue sweater off of the hanger, since the weather channel people said it would be chilly Saturday. I slowly walked over to my short brown dresser and pulled out a pair of black leggings and slid them on, and grabbing a pair of black boots then made my way towards the stairs. “Any day now.” I heard my mother mumble under her breath. Goodness did she know how to make me angry.
I trudged down the stairs, one step at a time. Counting each one until I was at the bottom. Taking my precious time. When I finally reached the end of the stairs my mother examined me from top to bottom, “You are not wearing that.” She sneered, motioning to my outfit with her hands. “Yes, I am.” I challenged taking a step forward. She glared at me.
“Go up stairs and change, now.”
“No.”
“Yes! Now go and change! I’m only going to tell you this one more time.
I crossed my arms and huffed, “No friggin’ way. I like the way I look.”
“Fine!” She scowled and picked up her keys, “Just go get in the car. I don’t have time to argue with you.” And with that I beamed happily, skipping to the car. I always win mother, when will you ever learn that? I thought to myself as I glided out the front door and plopped myself into the passenger seat, while my mother followed behind.
She stuck the key in the ignition and started the car. It had been ten minutes already and we had already passed all the stores and malls. I was starting to get antsy. Where are we going? I thought.
“Mom. Where are we going? We passed the ‘Town’ already. So what are you doing?”
Her grip loosened around the steering wheel. “We are going to meet your soon to be step dad.”
“What?!” I screeched. Did I hear wrong? Step – dad. I didn’t even know this woman was dating someone. Hag. I bit my bottom lip, “Anything else you haven’t told me?” I asked sarcastically.
“Yeah,” She replied making a left at the corner store. “He has three sons. The eldest one is Named Alex he is 19. The second oldest is Max, he’s eighteen and the youngest one is Jake. He’s a cute little fellow, he’s seventeen just like you.”
After hearing that my eyes literally bulged out of my head. See this is why I don’t like this woman. One: She never tells me anything. Like the fact that she was dating someone. Second: She’s already engaged and didn’t even bother tell me about him, or his kids. I mean come on, what kind of person does that to their kid?
I didn’t say anything back after she told me that not only was I going to have a new ‘Dad’ I would also be having ‘Siblings’ I was still shocked, because if you haven’t noticed I don’t know how to get along with people, but I really don’t get along with my mother, but I don’t even consider her as a human. Old lady...
After about ten more minutes of deadly silence, I heard my mother clear her throat as we pulled into a long, black and white marble driveway. “We’re here. Don’t do anything, or say anything stupid.” She said taking the key out of the ignition and stepping out of the car. I looked up at huge white mansion that now stood before us. Boy was I flabbergasted. This man must be loaded! I thought. I twisted the doorknob and popped the door open, slowly exiting.
“This place is beautiful,” I said almost breathlessly, and then looked over to my mom who was now smiling at me. I really didn’t understand her at times. I glanced back over to the gigantic house in front of me and smirked. “You get to marry another rich guy, aren’t you happy? Because I am so overjoyed, it’s just like when dad was alive and he had all that money.” I turned back to the house, “But don’t be mistaken. I still don’t like you one bit.” And with that, I journeyed up the steps of my soon to be wonderland.

Max
I woke up this morning with a ringing in my ears. “Maxie! We brought you breakfast in bed!” Alex chirped sitting the metal platter stacked high with pancakes, on my bed. I groaned, I wish those two idiots would shut the heck up! “How many times do I have to tell you not to just barge into my room!” I yelled. “And stop calling me ‘Maxie’ idiot!” I shouted, throwing my pillow at Alex’s face just before Jake busted in through the door singing ‘Love you like a love song baby.’
Those two were going to die by my hands.
I sighed, “What do you want, Jake?” He played with his short brown hair, “Ohhh nothing.” He rocked back in forth on his feet. Oookay. When I tell you my brothers’ just love getting on my nerves for the heck of it, like yesterday night I brought a girl home. Which I will never do again, because those two dummies..I don’t even want to talk about it. I glanced back over to Alex, then to Jake, “Get out of my room, please?” I asked pouting.
“So cute.” They both cooed. “But no.” I was five seconds away from going Rambo on them just when my father walked in.
I cursed, “Am I throwing a freaking party or something?” I asked sarcastically. My father glared at me and then looked over to Alex and Max. “Boys” He smiled, “They’re here. So max get your lazy butt up and put a shirt on; you don’t want to make a bad first impression on your sister-to-be.” I rolled my eyes and got out of bed. Why did it even matter? Isn’t that girl like, fourteen or something? But never mind that. I didn’t quite care about such trivial things as a new little ‘Sister.’ After slipping on my short sleeved, black shirt, still in my checkered pajama pants, I headed down stairs where everyone was waiting by the door impatiently.
I slouched down on the couch and propped my feet up. “Dad, how old is our sister anyways?” Jake asked, sucking on his lollipop. Goodness, he was such a little kid. There were two figures approaching the house from outside, so dad headed for the door. “She’s seventeen.” Wait. Hold up a second. Seventeen? I chocked on my own salvia. She’s the same age as Jake, oh lord…if she’s anything like Jake I’m going to kill my dad, but then again. A seventeen-year-old stepsister. What if she’s a nerd? I thought, even better. An ugly nerd that wears glasses. I laughed to myself but was awaken from my ‘Talking to myself’ moment by the doorbell.
Ding-Dong
“This is going to be fun.” I chuckled once more before sitting straight up on the couch. My dad slowly opened the door reveling the mother, what was here name, Sarah? Behind her stood a tall, skinny girl. She looked at the inside of the house, then spotted Alex and Jake and smiled. I stood up and made my way towards the doors giving my killer smile, “Hello.” I said, politely shaking the mothers hand and then looking towards her daughter. She rolled her eyes. The freak? How could someone resist this? I looked back over to her and tried once more, but all I got was a mean stare. So being the player that I am, I gave up.
