30.  India Shining? : 21 Aug 2014

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is writing a book that will attempt to “leave a historic       chronicle of contemporary lives”.

Voracious readers like me (?) are in real fix in finishing the books listed below which have been        published one by one in recent months.

One Life is not Enough : Natwr Singh

Crusader or Conspirtator: PC Parakh

Just Not an Accountant: Vinod Rai

An Accidental Prime Minister: Sanjay Baru &

Courage & Conviction: Gen VK Singh

Besides, Ms Sonia Gandhi had promised that she would write a book to 'tell all', when 'One         Life is not Enough' was published, which is still awaited. Now people like me will definitely find   it difficult to muster time for serious reading when Mr Manmohan Singh's book, one can expect it to be voluminous since he has to cover his two tenures as PM, gets published!

Future writers may kindly make it a point to see that their books are released with a gap of at         least six months so that the books will be read and understood as they deserve to be.

Next in the line may be Rahul Gandhi, Who Knows? Expected name is " Changing the system & empowering women”!

31.  Lest we Forget : 29 Aug 2014

Charchavedi Babu Monday, 29th August 2011 was a sad day for the elite circle of the socio-political and literary fraternity as also for the common man like me. It was on this day, Thiruvananthapuram lost one of its worthy, but unheralded sons, ‘Charchavedi Babu,’ the author, architect and soul of Charchavedi.

Babu, popularly known as Charchavedi Babu, was neither a man of letters nor a political activist. An employee of Kerala Government secretariat, he lived his life with a noble passion, to remember and pay tribute to those who lived in this God’s own country before him and left notable imprints on the social fabric of this tiny State.

He pursued his mission till his death in his own unique mode in the form of monthly meetings of Charchavedi, usually held in YMCA hall. It would probably be a record of sorts that for the past 37 years till his death in 2011 he religiously organised the meetings bearing all the expenses himself. He would invite you and me for the meeting well in advance through a hand written post card beautifully coloured with crayons .He would wait at the entrance of YMCA Hall and usher you to your seat. At the dong of 6’O clock he would ensure that the meeting started in right earnest. He never made the audience wait for the designated President to land. In case he (the President) happened to be late Babu would request someone from the audience to preside over. So the elite crowd of Trivandrum comprising of political bigwigs, writers and critics was doubly careful to present itself in time. Talk around the corner was that even Ministers left cabinet meetings to be in time for Charchavedi meetings This shows the respect and

His untimely demise at the young age of 67 leaves a vacuum in the public life of the capital city. Today, on his third death anniversary let us remember him and pay a fitting tribute to him by hoping that another ‘Babu’ from among the younger generation would take the cue and continue with the Charchavedi, starting with a meeting in September to honour Charchavedi Babu fund for providing financial assistance to the family of Charchavedi Babu has been constituted by his well wishers. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is the chief patron of the fund committee to be chaired by former minister M. Vijayakumar. Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Ministers P.K. Kunhalikutty, K.C. Joseph, V.S. Sivakumar, P.K. Abdu Rabb, Mayor K Chandrika, poets like O.N.V. Kurup, Sugathakumari and Puthussery Ramachandran, writer G.N. Panicker, Political leaders O. Rajagopal, V.M. Sudheeran, N.K. Premachandran, Shashi Tharoor. MP, actor Madhu, is also members of the committee.

32.  Would someone care? 08 Sep 2014

In India 'Teachers' & 'Nurses' in private schools/ hospitals are two categories of professionals who receive scant attention form the Govt as also from the society as a whole.

It is a pity that in this great democracy of ours these two support pillars of the society are not acknowledged, remunerated and rewarded well as compared to other developed/developing nations in the world. We often conveniently forget the very fact that the teachers are the ones who mould and mentor the youngsters of today to worthy citizens of tomorrow and nurses are the ones who keep them fit both mentally and physically to perform well in life.

Reports appeared in the press recently show the dismal fact how teachers in private schools with good qualifications and vast experience are exploited by their employers because of the mere fact that there is none from the social or political circles to listen to their snivels. Doesn't it shame us to read that in one school a teacher with 20 years of experience has to pay back Rs 8000 in cash every month whereas she signs the salary statement showing Rs 28000. You and I know that such unfortunate teachers (?) are in hundreds in this country.

Aren't you saddened seeing your wife or daughter, a teacher, burning the mid night oil till 3 AM every night in correction work after 8 hrs of tedious teaching assignment in the school? I know you have to lump it for you or your daughter have to make both ends meet!

The plight of the Nurses is also more or less the same. A newly appointed nurse cannot think of a starting salary of more than Rs 5000 in the majority of private hospitals. It is a fact that nurses in India are paid the least as against other nations in the world, which actually forces them to be part of the regular exodus to western countries. The Human Resources Ministry would do well if it addresses the problems of these two unheralded classes of professionals

33.  This is India : 12 Sep 2014

One year-old issued court summons for ‘possible breach of peace’ in UP, TOI: 11 Sep MORADABAD:

A one-year-old boy and his father have been served notices in apprehension of breach of peace during Thakurdwara by poll on September 13. The district police in Moradabad filed a report that the toddler and his father may indulge in booth capturing and intimidation of voters during the by poll.

An inquiry has been ordered. A sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) issued the summons to the father son under section 107/16 CRPC 1973 — an offence that invites police action in anticipation of possible "breach of peace" against a person. The father and son had to file a security bond, failing which they could be imprisoned. The police filed a report that said the toddler, Nazim, and his 28-year-old father, Yaseen, residents of Usmanpur village may attempt to capture booths or commit a crime during the by-elections here. The report also mentions that the duo may intimidate voters to favour a particular candidate. Nazim has also been listed among the "goonda elements" of the district by the local police.

Will TOI tell us what action taken against that erring policeman?

34  ‘Mary Kom" : A movie for all ages!

I am neither Rajiv Massand nor Anupama Chopra, hence not in a position to review a highly acclaimed movie like ‘Mary Kom’.

But I couldn’t resist myself from writing few words about this film for the following reasons:

‘Mary Kom’ is one of the two films recently made on a living legend of Indian Sports, the other being “Bhag Milkha Bhag” on the only one Flying Sikh. Though both Rajiv Massand & Anupama Chopra gave only an average rating (2 & Half Star) for this movie, I would say that it has definitely inspired our younger generation tremendously to look at sports as career to pursue. My grandson, who prefers to sleep through the Bollywood movies and soap operas, sat through ‘Mary Kom’ full length and is waiting for its CD to be released to see again and again. Incidentally he has spent late hours to watch “BMB” at least 15 times when it was released. Such is the motivational effect of these types of movies on the young minds. ‘Mary Kom’ is therefore a wonderful movie, which need to be watched by all ages, forget for a moment about its cinematic minuses as enumerated by Massands & Chopras.

Milkha is a household name for more than 50 years now in India. His achievements are well known and are heralded by all those who have slightest inclination to sports and in every corner of India.   But Mary Kom, though won five Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championshipsand has been awarded Padma Bhushan (2013), Padma Shree (2010) Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2009) and Arjuna (2003), is not so well known and   is unheralded   by the common public of India. This movie is a great tribute to this frail woman from Manipur, who arguably   is one of the most decorated sports person, fought against all odds to be the World Champion in her weight category five times and still carries on with the same grit & determination.   I earnestly recommend every Indian to watch ‘Mary Kom’ she deserves that.

Mary Kom personifies grit, determination and focus on her mission ie Boxing. By enacting the difficult role of ‘Maginficent Mary’ to perfection Priyanka Chopra once again proved what a versatile actress she is! She really lives and boxes as Mary Kom, the great. An out of the world performance!

Full credit is due to Omung Kumar for the casting of Sunil Thapa as Coach Narjit Singh and Darshan Kumar as Onkhler Kom as also for his efforts to keep the audience on the edge of their seats through out.

One small mess up. In the finals of 2008 World Championships held at Ningbo City, China Mary Kom’s opponent in finals   was Steluta Duta of Romania and not of Germany as was shown in the movie and Mary won easily at 7-1. Steluta Duta was again beaten in the finals by Mary in 2010 at Bridgetown. I am not sure how the factual error can be corrected!

Anyway ‘Mary Kom’ was a great experience.

35. Digvijai Bats for  Sashi Taroor :  09 Oct 2014

Digvijay Singh Tweets on Shashi Tharoor

“I see nothing wrong in Shashi Tharoor accepting to be Brand Ambassador for Swachhta Abhiyan. It is Congress Party programme adopted by Modi,”

Thank God! Some one supports Shashi Tharoor!

Firstly who told Digvijay Singh that Shashi Tharoor was appointed as the Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan!

What Modi said was this "I have also started a social media campaign, I have invited nine people to post pictures of them cleaning and they will invite another nine people. It includes Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, Bollywood actors Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Yoga guru Ramdev baba and a team of Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah." It is reported now that all nine invitees accepted his invitation. Where does the Brand Ambassador come from ?

Secondly, what is interesting is to learn that Swachhta Abhiyan is a congress Party programme, which was in the anvil for 10 long years, launch was forgotten due to heavy pressure from other commitments! True that Congress inadvertently failed to take patent of the programme. Does it mean that BJP can hijack the prorgramme in a different name?

Congress should file a suit in Supreme court against PM Modi for violation of patent rights, can argue that the patent should be deemed to have been granted since for 10 years no one else has applied for it.

36.  If Rahul is not responsible,  then who? 12 Oct 2014

Day by day the media, both print and visual, are finding it difficult to fix the responsibility for the decimation of Congress in May elections
