A flame-colored ginger tom watched over Spottednose. His green eyes flashed. Firestar growled and stood up. He padded over to the cracked, chestnut tree, popular on StarClan's ground. Firestar unsheathed his claws and carved clawmarks in the bark.
"Firestar."
Firestar whipped around, surprised. In front of him was Bluestar. "Greetings," he meowed, dipping his head.
"Firestar," Bluestar repeated, padding toward him. "Have you've been watching Spottednose?"
"Yes, I have," Firestar growled. "Look at what Dappleheart and Darkshade have become. Spottednose and Nightdash have no idea what they're hiding."
Bluestar nodded, then swept her gaze on the forest below. She turned her gaze back to Firestar. "You did good helping the clans. Unfortunately, they had to abandon each other. At least DustClan and MistClan have been formed. Firestar, even though you no longer roam the forest, your time isn't over. You need to guide Spottednose just as Spottedleaf had guided you when you were a young warrior."
Firestar shivered as he remembered the beautiful she-cat he had once loved. He dipped his head. "As you wish, Bluestar."
Bluestar looked down at the forest once again, thoughtfully. "Spottednose is a good cat, isn't she?" Without waiting for a reply, she continued, "Don't think the Dark Forest would have anything against her?"
Firestar's eyes glinted. "The Dark Forest is against everyone," he growled.
"Why, yes, of course. But do you think they would try to trick her into training with them?" Bluestar mewed worriedly.
"Spottednose's not a mouse-brain. She knows that StarClan cats have stars in their fur. Besides, she's a warrior," Firestar assured Bluestar.
Bluestar's fur suddenly rose up. "Look at the tree!" she hissed.
Firestar turned his head slowly, his mouth widening in a gasp of horror. His claw marks were oddly twisted, slowly forming into words.
As moons pass, the spotted beauty will get the fortunes in the water...
Bluestar's fur wouldn't lie down. She snapped her eyes at Firestar, who turned back around.“Firestar, hurry! Wait until Spottednose falls asleep. Tell her the prophecy! She must know, for the sake of her! I know it’s about her! Spotted beauty?” Bluestar anxiously flexed her claws in the soil. “This is your time, Firestar. Help another cat.” And with that, Bluestar faded away.
Firestar nodded to the fading Bluestar. He perfectly leaped off StarClan’s grounds. He raced through the forest, trying to find DustClan’s territory. Firestar found it with ease, as he watched Spottednose all the time. He watched Spottednose curl up in her nest. He bounded through the camp silently and unseen.
“Spottednose,” he whispered, as he entered the den. He leaped into Spottednose’s dream. “Spottednose,” he repeated.
“Spottednose turned around. “Who are you? You’re from StarClan, right?”
Firestar didn’t reply. He knew StarClan cats and dreams had to be silent and mysterious. “As moons pass, the spotted beauty will get the fortunes in the water…”
Firestar whispered, letting himself fade.
“What? Surely you must be clearer than that?” Spottednose screeched, outraged. “Come back!” she yowled.
Firestar blinked at her sadly. He remembered being left confused in the darkness. But he had to do this. “Remember…”
Spottednose yowled once more. But it was too late. Firestar had dispersed. Firestar transported back to StarClan’s ground. There was no need to pray to StarClan to keep Spottednose safe, keeping in mind he’s a StarClan cat himself now.
Firestar looked down at Spottednose, twitching in the rest of her sleep. She will understand,
he thought. She will…
Spottednose shook her head confused. Dawn was awakening. Nightdash yawned. Appleslash yawned also. "Anyone up for a dawn patrol?"
Spottednose mewled, "Me." she just needed to get her mind off her previous dream. But it was hard. She didn't even know the StarClan cat's name! The prophecy... obviously it was about her. But how would i get my fortunes in the water?
"Spottednose?" Nightdash questioned. "Are you okay? You're scowling at your nest."
Spottednose snapped back to attention. "I'm fine," she assured her brother. Yet, she hoped she sounded more confident than she was. That flame-colored ginger tom still nagged her, whoever he was. All Spottednose knew is that he was definetely from StarClan.
Appleslash gathered up some more warriors and they set out. Midnightpaw and Pinepaw bounced excitedly around Spottednose's mother, Dappleheart.
Appleslash led the patrol and they headed for Mice's Field. The most plentiful part of their territory, even in leaf-bare. But it's greenleaf now. They passed the chipped tree trunk, Spottednose's favorite place to relax as an apprentice.
Icestorm and Bluepelt sniffed the air. Tails going up in excitement, they detected their prey. As they went, Spottednose also sniffed the air. All these mice scents filled her nostrils. She decided to go after the fat one, distracted in the grass.
She wriggled her hindquarters and stalked the mouse. Ready to pounce, a disrubtance came through the grass and the mouse squealed and ran away. Spottednose straigtened up and eyed the grass angrily. "Whoever you are, you just ruined my catch!"
Littlesky of MistClan showed her appearance. "My clan needs food and I'm giving it to them. She showed the mouse Spottednose had been stalking into her view.
"Prey-stealer!" Spottednose yowled at the top of her lungs. "Prey-stealer!"
Littlesky picked the mouse up in her jaws and fled. Spottednose bounded after her. "Foxheart! Come and fight for that prey!"
Littlesky didn't stop. For a MistClan she-cat, she was surprisingly fast. Spottednose heard pawsteps behind her. Turning her head, she saw Appleslash bounding behind her.
"Littlesky!" he yowled angrily. Littlesky kept running, but Spottednose could tell she was getting tired.
Spottednose stopped abruptly. "Littlesky!" she bellowed through the forest. "Stop!"
Littlesky finally slowed her pace, panting harshly. Stopping, she turned around. "Please let me have this prey!"
Appleslash came to a stop beside Spottednose. He narrowed his eyes. "Answer this question first. How did you get here?"
Littlesky's eyes darted from side to side uneasily. Finally landing her gaze on Appleslash, she mewled, "I heard some of your apprentices bragging about how Mice Field at the last Gathering. I figured that Mice Field was this place, seeing that your warriors always came to hunt here."
"We hunt in other places!" Spottednose defends DustClan hotly.
Littlesky flicks her ears. Ignoring Spottednose, Littlesky continues, "I decided to come here at dawn, hoping not to catch your patrol. But I did," she finished with a sigh.
Appleslash studies her for a moment, looking her up and down. "Keep the prey," he growled. "Rub it on bushes in your territory so it's not like you stole it."
"Thank you!" Littlesky squealed. She picked up the mouse again and bounded off to her territory gleefully.
"Let's get back to the patrol," Appleslash growled unhappily. Spottednose padded after him back to where he left the patrol. After all this excitement, Spottednose remembered the dream. The prophecy...
As moons pass, the spotted beauty will get the fortunes in the water...
