had a deal," I interrupted. “I passed your ridiculous test now I want my memory back and I want to leave this hell hole now!”
“Right you are. Nurse Hilda,” He said turning to the nurse and stretching out a palm up hand. “The pill please.” The nurse nodded, picked up a tiny, zip lock bag and placed it in his hand. He opened the bag, held it in front of me and dropped a single pill capsule onto my open hand. I looked at it to see the number 57 indented into it.
“So I just swallow this and it’s done?”
“That is the idea, yes,” Dr. Watts said. So I swallowed it and it had an all too familiar sour lemon taste that was in my mouth when I woke.
“Say ahh,” The nurse said, looking in my mouth and then nodding to Dr. Watts.
“Great, now that you have swallowed the pill I guess I can tell you the truth,” He pulled a chair in front of me and sat down, looking at me in the eyes. “I lied.”
“What?” I said, suddenly feeling a bit dizzy.
“I lied about everything. Well, almost everything. For one thing you’re not just a random person we picked up off the street; you’re Amalia Kay, a traitor to your country and a prisoner of The Facility. You killed a total of ten people, including the Vice President, in a bombing you caused, so they sent you here. You’ve been here for eight years and the pill you just took isn’t going to give you your memory back, it’s going to remove it again. This is the 8th time you took this test, and it won’t be the last.”
"But you promised," I slurred.Everything was going dim again and I felt fuzzy.
“You’re going to take a long nap, and when you wake up, you won’t remember a thing," he said, or at least I think he did.
"I'll remember this, I swear!" I tried to yell, but I don't know if it ever came out my mouth, because only a few seconds later everything went black.
And everything went back.
ONE YEAR LATER
I woke up with the taste of lemon in my mouth. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light I realized something: I don’t know where I am. And then I realized something else: I don’t know who I am. Imprint
