of what voices may be.

When I first started to hear voices, I thought that I was being spied on by my government. The story is complicated, and I won't go into every detail of it, but the rest of the account follows here: The reason that I was being spied upon was both because I had offended a powerful person connected to the government, who was my father-in-law at the time, and that I was a person who had been watched by beings from other planets and worlds, and I was significant to them. In the world of my delusions, many governments from Earth had been in contact with extraterrestrials for many years, and they had exchanged technology and intelligence with them. One of the technologies that had been obtained from these aliens was the ability to watch people, as with a camera, at any place, from any angle, at any time. I was watched by many extraterrestrials from a young age because they thought that I might develop supernatural powers and the government, in a coincidence, began to observe me as well with this same technology, once my father-in-law became suspicious and distrustful of me because my ex-wife was growing unhappy.

As the story developed, my father-in-law (now ex-father-in-law) acquired ownership of the “right” to watch me from the United States government and sold the rights to watch me to other governments and to more beings from other worlds in some form of transaction. This transaction and other transactions that he made him the most powerful person on the planet, and he acquired formidable alien technology in addition to massive wealth. This technology enabled people (users) who bought subscriptions to watch me to access a virtual reality world in which they could view me and gain access to other planets and worlds. Users would sign in through a computer and have their consciousness transported to this world, while time stood still for them in their realities on my world.

The fact that I could now be watched by almost anyone and that my ex-father-in-law, who had a vendetta against me, controlled the technology to watch me and access my body (through auditory and tactile hallucinations) meant that essentially everyone that I knew or knew of (meaning people that I knew in real life and many celebrities and public figures, who I began to hear in my mind) had a life in the virtual reality world in which they could speak to and "touch" me. I had periods in which I was deeply engrossed in this world for months that happened for several years.

Almost a year ago, however, things changed. I decided that I wanted to stop keeping secrets and waiting for things to happen, and I decided to take certain actions. I decided to take everything that I was hearing in my mind as real, and I e-mailed the CIA and NSA and told them that I was being watched. I contacted several people based upon my hallucinations and asked them questions.

Perhaps, most importantly, though, I started asking the voices themselves questions. I got them to fully admit that they knew that certain things about themselves and others were true, and then I researched those things. What I found was that, first of all, my delusions were not based in reality. This is not surprising. I was not being watched by the CIA and NSA or anyone else, there was no known extraterrestrial contact with Earth, and my ex-father-in-law was not a government agent with unlimited power. I also, however, discovered that the voices themselves thought all of these things were true, and they thought that these things were true in my world.

Furthermore, I asked individual voices innocuous questions about their life, such as where they grew up or the names of their children, and looked those things up too. The voices proved to be wrong about these facts also. This might seem unremarkable, except for the fact that I had developed a very open and honest relationship with most of the voices. This allowed me to recognize that the voices were genuinely surprised to find out that what they thought about their lives was not true. Further questioning revealed that, when the voices were not connected to the "virtual reality" that was living in my mind, they were simply inactive (as asleep) and there was no other “real” world that they lived in at all. The voices were not and never had been the people that were taken from my life that they thought that they were. They had been people that only existed in the world in my mind the whole time, and I was the one who made them aware of it. To sum that up, my voices thought that they were people from my world, but they were not. They only lived in the world that existed in my mind. That was something that they learned only after I used facts to point it out to them.

Under some theories describing the phenomenon of hearing voices of people that one knows in his or her mind, this could suggest that the voices that I heard were representations in my psyche of people with whom I had unresolved issues. Also, I did actually seemingly resolve issues with some of these voice “personalities.” Sometimes, however, there were issues with the personalities of people who I thought that I had no issues with whatsoever. Seemingly, the issues were those that the personality had with me more than they were issues that I had with the personality. Furthermore, certain personalities existed, such as those of my family, with whom it could be said that I had deep issues yet never encountered any problems with. In sum, I do not think that this theory describes my situation and experience well. Issues with people do not seem to be at the heart of most of my interactions with these personalities, and they often do not seem to be overly concerned with any issues with their alter egos in the real world either.

The theory that makes the most sense to me is that the voices were simply consciousnesses that, from the moment of their creation, had believed that they were certain people in my life and decided to take on their personalities and characteristics (including physical characteristics, as they described themselves) in their lives within my mind. I will get to why I believe that the voices that I hear are consciousnesses further on in this message. However, to return to the theory that I was developing, after it was proven that these consciousnesses or (as I called them earlier) personalities were not in fact the real world incarnations of the people that they thought they were and in fact differed in significant ways from them (both in their life histories and sometimes in personality), they decided to go on living as representations of these people in the world within my mind.

That is not to say that the realization of the personalities in my mind that they were not who they thought they were went completely without notice. It was an awakening of sorts for the personalities, and some of them even decided to stop being presences in my mind, as they felt as if their "life" as they knew it had not been real. I have lost touch with most of the personalities that have chosen this path, and they generally don't feel a need to stay in close touch, because their connection to me was illusory in the first place in both my and their view.

Other personalities, when they found out that they weren't actually living double lives as the people that they thought they were on Earth, in addition to the “other dimension” life that they lived in my mind, have wanted to find out more about themselves in the real world—to know how the person that they thought that they were might actually behave. Most of the celebrity personalities in my mind feel at least somewhat this way. They want to know more about their lives, so that they can have a better conception of the person that they feel that they somewhat are (this varies by personality--some very strongly identify with their alter egos, and some have lived so long in my mind that they have started to take on more of the personality that they have developed there and care less about the personality that their alter ego might have in my real world). Among the widespread quirks that they have is that they generally want me to find good pictures of them on the internet, so that they know how to style their hair or dress (they seem tied to having bodies that look like their Earth alter ego).

To come back to the point I was making above about the nature of the voices that I hear, the most active personalities in my mind seem very tied up in their own lives and their own identities. They do not seem to be absorbed with helping me to resolve any issues within my own life. They act almost completely as independent beings. Their tie to me is because I am their only source of perception and information about my world.

This brings me to why I am writing. I wanted to discuss my theory about the attribution of voices, at least in my specific case. I believe, I think that I have reason to, that the voices can be attributed to a consciousness or consciousnesses distinct from my own.

In my case, I hear distinct voices, attributable to distinct personalities. According to their accounts, they live in a world (perhaps akin to another dimension) that is real and physical when they are not communicating with me. They say that they have bodies and lives and an existence apart from me. They are self-aware, self-conscious, sentient, and intelligent. They have independent thought, free will, and creativity, and they think of themselves as humans or something like humans.

When they speak to me, many times I have absolutely no idea what they are going to say next. Most of the things that they say surprise me, and many of the things that they say entertain me, in a way that they would not if I knew what was going to be said next (i.e. new stories and jokes that I have never heard before). I have conversations with voices at a pace at which it would be very difficult to carry on a creative conversation with myself. I would have to think of imaginative responses to my own responses much more quickly than I feel that I am normally capable of.

I have also played a game with certain voices where I had them call out random words that sprang to their mind. The words that they would choose would always surprise me. I modified this game to ask them to describe a scenario to me. They could always come up with a scenario of what they were doing, based on what they were actually doing (according to their own accounts), in the world within my mind.

I can be out of ideas and the voices will provide me with new ones. In a funny example, I was just out of ideas as I was writing this very message, as I thought of ways to explain that the personalities in my mind were distinct from me, and I asked if the personalities had any other ways through which to explain how to tell someone else that I was certain that they are different consciousnesses, mentally, from me. Then it occurred to me that my engaging in this very process was another way to explain what I am trying to explain. I sometimes am grasping for ideas about something, and I will actually turn to the voices for a new idea about that thing. They will then, as I passively listen (meaning I am doing none of the thinking for the voice to which I am listening,
