He felt sick. Everybody around him seemed to be so happy and he was just as sad as never before. Sea gulls were flying over the dunes and he watched the kids playing together in front of him. Why couldn’t he just be a child again? He didn’t want to continue his stupid life like that. Since he knew that she would never return his affections everything felt wrong.
He should have known it. It had been so clear. How could he really have believed that she could fall in love with him? She was so beautiful. He never had met a person like her before. He looked down at his naked feet and let the fine sand glide through the fingers of this right hand. The sun was shining bright and somehow he wondered if he would ever experience true love. Would anyone fall in love with him one day? Or would he have to suffer from lovesickness for the rest of his live? He didn’t want to believe that. The mere thought of this made him have stomach pains. Two smooching lovers walked right past him with a toothy grin on their faces.
Maybe she would change her mind if she found out how great he actually was. Well, he really had to admit that he wasn’t the best looking boy ever, but he wasn’t the worst looking either. And he had been fallen in love with her at the first sight. Could it really be true that she felt nothing for him? Yesterday she had looked right into his eyes and he had been so sure that she loved him, too. They had been sitting here till very late at night, talking about everything under the sun.
It had felt so right. He had struggled to hide his inner turmoil but then revealed his feelings to her. She had been laughing out loud, thinking he was joking. When she realised that he wasn’t, he already had stood up to walk away. He had felt so hurt and couldn’t cope with her reaction. How could she just laugh, instead of understanding him? Was it possible that she didn’t recognise anything all the time they had been together? They knew each other for five years now and always had been the very best friends. But he couldn’t stop imagine her in her beautiful white dress and her eye-catching smile. He started daydreaming again and saw her beaming at him. It would have been indescribable great to kiss her only once. To touch her and to let her know that she would always be the only one for him. He was startled from his beautiful daydreaming by an ice cream man who was shouting loudly offering his “unimaginable best ice cream ever”.
“It’s all over!” he thought. Once again fate was telling him that dreams are but shadows. He wasn’t to abandon his hopes yet, but didn’t want to cling to false hopes either. The ice man was now standing right in front of him, beaming at him the way he wished she would have looked at him. Maybe a wafer cone would help to get rid of his frustration. He decided that it was worth a try although he felt like he needed a whole ice bucket to swallow all of his lovesickness. He pulled a face when he imagined how he would look like as an old lonesome man after putting on weight due to emotional problems. But then he got used to the idea that it didn’t make any difference whether to look good or not if she didn’t fall in love with him anyway. He ordered a big ice-cream tub with chocolate and strawberry. While licking it he suddenly heard a familiar voice behind him that offered the same again. He turned round to look into her trusting and affectionately looking face. A little smile flitted across her face. She sat down beside him without saying a word. He looked at her hopefully and confused, afraid of waking up every minute just to notice he had fallen asleep and that she wasn't really here next to him. She took his hand and winked at him. Somehow he wasn't sure what to do. He raised his eyebrowns and couldn't help staring at her beautiful smile. He still couldn't believe his eyes when she got closer to him. The evenig sun glowed red on the horizon. A feeling of happiness was suddenly overcoming him. Her eyes were sparkling and before he knew where he was she kissed him passionately. He closed his eyes and didn't really know what was happening to him. It didn't matter. It was the best he had ever felt and he never wanted to stop it. He had entered the paradies and wasn't to leave it anymore. It felt like moving in on the first flour of cloude nine. When they were sitting there kissing each other soft rain started and a wonderful rainbow appeared at the sky. He didn't know what to say or what to think. The only thing he knew was that his dream had come true...
