Ed’s Supermarket
By M. J. Wolper
Ed was a tall man a bit over 6 foot and in his late forties. He was as fat as he was tall. He looked like Friar Tuck gone to seed. Ed was the manager of a supermarket in the West Village in New York City. He liked to let things run themselves. His staff consisted of cahiers, stock people, deli guys and fresh fruit and veg guys. His staff liked working for him because for the most part they could do as they wished. Ed had a drinking problem and would only stay passed 3pm if he wanted to stock up on groceries. Ed relied on his assistant’s to do most of the work. His assistants were almost always young and male and never stayed more than a couple of months. There was a steady stream of one assistant after another one was arrested for drunk driving (he always was a bit tipsy on the job too) and another one was headhunted by Burger King. The others just left after they graduated from high school and went to college.
Working for Ed was liberating you had to be a self-starter and train and manage yourself. The only time Ed really came in handy was when a customer started to make a scene. Ed would stand over the person and yell them down. All the cahiers enjoyed these moments because they had built up a lot of resentment and anger toward the customers. The only staff member that felt better was the one Ed stood up for. That person felt like they were valued.
The customers of the supermarket were mostly wealthy and mostly stressed. This meant the job was tense on many occasions and would have been unbearable if it wasn’t for Ed.
