a bunch of giggling. Then there were namesâŠWhore, Orphan, Bitch, Bastard, VoidâŠthen there was Zero. This one hurt most. It came from the one person I fell in love with. We got really close, and then out of nowhereâŠZero.â Rubbing again.
He cringed. âAfter that, it just spread around like a disease. Everyone called me Zero. And they ALL knew what it meantâŠâ That was it. That was his story. Zeroâs story. It hurt so much to say it all, more than he could ever imagined. He buried his face in the boyâs chest and began to cry as hard as he could. The boy simply responded by rubbing his back and stroking his hair.
âSorry,â Zero said, as he sat back a few minutes later. He wiped his eyes. âWowâŠI really soaked your shirt.â
âHuh? Oh, itâs fine. Donât worry about it. Feel better?â
âYeah. Lots actually. Thanks. Hey, whereâs your family?â
âI have them, but I donât. I mean theyâre alive, somewhere. But I donât care for them, and they donât care for me. Never did. When I left, I left for good. Pretty much raised myselfâŠâ A look of loneliness crossed his face.
âIâm sorry.â
âItâs fine. Iâm used to not having family. I imagine it was harder for you having them and then losing them.â
âNot as bad as being taunted by their physical presence without the emotional one.â
âEh, who knows?â They both just sat there, silent, warm, safe in their moment of haven. The terror of years temporarily lifted, a long-lasting wound tended for a while, a void filled just ever-so-slightly.
âI have an idea!â they both cried at the same time!
âYou first,â said Zero.
âWhy donâtâŠwe be family?â
âHuh? Explain.â
âI mean, be likeâŠyou know, brothers?â
âA brother? He never had a sibling even as a child. This was new. A new brotherâŠa new familyâŠâ Fear crossed his face.
The boyâs face reflected his fear, though not for the same reasons. âBut could I stand that? Being brothers with a person I just fell smack down on my face for? I guess I gotta try now.â
âYâŠYeahâŠâ
âWhat?â
âLetâs do it! Brothers, I mean!â
âReally?â
âYeah! Iâve never had a sibling, and it would be nice to have a family again.â
âIt really would.â
âBrothers then?â asked Zero.
âBrothers!â exclaimed the boy. They hugged each other tight, and rested in each otherâs arms, enjoying the unusual warmth of love. âMaybeâŠmaybe something more one dayâŠâ They sat back after a minute of holding.
âSo, what exactly is your name?â Zero asked. âYou havenât told me yet.â
âLeon.â
âLeonâŠBrother LeonâŠâ
âHaha! Donât make me sound a priest now! They would never accept me!â
âOh? Would it have something to do with that cute comment earlier?â
âUhâŠWell, you are.â
âThat doesnât answer the question!â
âOkay. Well the truth isâŠIâm gay!â Leon said a blush lighting his face. Zero face contorted with the force of the internal struggle going on him. Sadly, he failed as he burst out laughing and fell back on to the bed in tears of joy.
âHey! Shut up! Itâs not funny, okay?â
âIâmâŠIâm sorry! It justâŠcaught me off guard.â He continued snickering for a minute or so, the only response he received being a mildly agitated glare. âDonât worry. Iâm bi.â
Now it was Leonâs turn to bust out laughing. âWOW! Now I really feel like a moron. I hope we didnât make a bad decision with this.â
âAh, who cares? Weâre here and happy, right?â
âRight.â Leon looked out the window at the sky. âWow, itâs already night out there. We talked a lot longer than I thought.â
âYou should go before the other dormies come back and a fight ensues.â
âI am your roommate.â Zeroâs eyes widened at this, and he felt his spirits soar. Finally, his repayment for all the years of Hell. âWe should probably get to sleep, Zero.â
âItâs Mark.â
âI think Zero sounds better. Weâll turn that curse into a blessing.â
Mark smiled. âAlright.â He laid down next to Leon on the bed, as he turned off the lights.
âGoodnight, Leon.â
âGoodnight, Brother.â
