âOkay, Mommy.â
The phone rang. âMust be Daddy. Iâm going to go grab the phone. You stay here. Do not get out.â Janelle went to the bedroom and grabbed the phone. The Caller ID showed Wadeâs number. âHi.â
âHi. Howâs everything there?â
âGood. We watched your favorite DVD tonight. Had some Chuck Cluck Chicken. God, that stuff is so good. And now, weâre all pretty worn out. How about you?â
âGood, good. Long ride.â
Janelle glanced at her watch. âSo, did you sneak out to call home?â
âWhat?â
âOf the meeting. Did you sneak out to call home?â
âOh, the meeting, yeah. Theyâre at a break right now. Iâm just sitting around waiting for them to start back up.â
âOkay. I hope itâsâŠâ
âDamn it.â
Janelle heard something fall in the background. âWhat? Is something wrong, Wade?â
âHold on.â There was a moment of silence. Janelle heard what sounded like a door being slammed shut in the distance. âSorry. I dropped my glass and got water all over my pants.â
âSorry. Maybe you should take it as a sign. Bow out of the meeting and leave that way you couldâŠ
âDamn it. Hold on a second.â Wadeâs phone landed on something Janelle assumed was a table. Janelle stared at her reflection in the mirror. She really liked her new haircut. âSorry. What were you saying, Janelle?â
âNothing, really. Is everything all right, Wade? You sound, I donât know⊠frustrated.â
Wade cleared his throat. âNo, thereâs just this person here who is driving me nuts. You know the kind, they just will not shut up even when you give them âthe lookâ.â
Janelle laughed. âYeah. I know that kind. They are annoying. Sorry. I guess itâs because youâre the new kid on the block or pulpit.â
Wade laughed so hard he snorted. âI guess so. Iâve got to get going. Wet pants and all, Iâve got to go back to the meeting.â He groaned.
âWanna say goodnight to Liza first?â Janelle walked into the bathroom and smiled at Liza. âIâm gonna put you on speaker. Say hi to Daddy, Liza.â
âHi, Daddy.â
âHey, Sweetie. Whatâre you doing?â
Liza glanced at the bubbles in her hands then looked up at Janelle. âIâm taking a bubble bath.â
âWhat? Whatâd she say? I couldnât understand her, Liza. Thereâs some sort of interference on the line.â
âSheâs taking a bubble bath.â
Wade spoke up. âIâm sorry, I canât hear you guys. Hello? Hello?â
Janelle sighed and looked at Liza. âMountains. Theyâre just not good for cell phones.â She spoke directly into the phone even though she knew Wade probably couldnât hear her. âWell, gonna hang up now. Love you.â
Janelle let Liza play a little longer and then said, âEnough, youâre going to turn into a prune. Bedtime, missy.â
Once Liza was dried and dressed for bed, Janelle tucked her in. âAlright letâs say our prayers.â
Liza lay in her bed and put her folded hands up to her chin. âNow I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. God bless Mommy and Grandma and Grandpa and Peter and my teachers and the lady in the cafeteria and Dumbo. Amen.â
âDidnât you forget somebody?â
Liza furrowed her brow then added quickly, âOh, and Daddy. God bless Daddy.â
âWell, that was less than enthusiastic. Are you unhappy because Daddy isnât here to tuck you in?â
Liza turned away from her mother. âNo. Night, night Mommy.â
Janelle kissed Liza and made her way back downstairs to pour herself a glass of wine. And why shouldnât she have a glass of wine? It would be the perfect way to wrap up her day. Chardonnay in hand, Janelle made her way up back upstairs to her bedroom. She was so tired she wondered if she would actually finish the glass sheâd poured.
She slid beneath the covers and sipped on her wine and listened to soft music. Before long, Janelle was in a deep sleep. Around two oâclock she heard something that roused her from her sleep. Dumbo was on the floor, completely out of it. He wasnât exactly the worldâs greatest guard dog. âYou lazy old thing.â She got up and nudged her hound dog. He wiggled. âNo, no. Donât worry yourself, Dumbo. Iâve got this. You just keep sleeping.â
Janelle made her way down the hall and heard something. It sounded like Liza talking, only her voice sounded different. Muffled. âLiza?â She continued down the hall to Lizaâs room. When she opened the door she saw that Liza had, once again put all her shoes out. This time they were in a neat little row along the edge of her bed. âLiza, are you awake?â
She got closer to Lizaâs bed and realized she wasnât there. âLiza?â Janelle turned when she heard her daughter in Peterâs room. âWonderful, Iâll bet sheâs checking to see if he poohed in his diaper.â
Janelle opened the door to Peterâs room. âLiza?â She wasnât by Peterâs crib. Nor was she anywhere in Peterâs room that she could tell. âLiza? Where are you?â
âMommy?â
Janelle turned around quickly expecting to see Liza standing behind her. But she wasnât there. âLiza. This isnât funny. Where are you?â
âMommy?â There was something in the tone of Lizaâs voice that worried Janelle.
âLiza, where are you? Tell me right now. This isnât funny. You know I donât like it when you play hide and go seek. Especially in the dark.â
âOver here.â
Janelle made her way towards the sound of her daughterâs voice.
âHere. Over here.â
Janelle went to where she was sure Liza was standing. She started feeling lightheaded and thought maybe sheâd accidentally taken a Xanax with her wine. She knew she was standing near a light switch and flipped it, expecting to see her daughter standing right in front of her. âLiza.â
âOver here.â Janelle turned towards the sound of the voice again. âOver here.â This time it came from behind her.
Janelleâs heart raced. All she heard were the words âover hereâ being spoken again and again. And she was terrified. She started running⊠away from the voices. But they followed her. She fled down the stairs trying to get away from them. Only when she thought she was at the foot of the stairs, she was back at the top.
âOver here.â
The voice was right behind her. She turned around slowly not sure was she was going to see. âLiza?â No one. âWhat is going on? Who are you? What do you want from me?â
Janelle felt someone small tug at her hand. She turned and looked down. âCan you help me find my shoes?â
âNo. No. No.â Janelle woke up screaming. It wasnât the same dream. Itâs was different. It never started that way. Never. She was terrified down to her core. âWhat the hell is going on?â Shaking, she grabbed her bottle of tranquilizers and took one. She had considered downing it with some more wine but decided the dream⊠the nightmare was probably linked to all the alcohol sheâd ingested throughout the day. She stared at the ceiling waiting for sleep to come to her.
âMommy?â Liza shook Janelle. âMommy, wake up. Arenât you going to make me my breakfast?â
âWhat? Liza? Breakfast? What time is it?â
Liza pointed to the clock by Janelleâs head.
âOh, shit. Itâs nine. Youâve got to be kidding me. Iâm so sorry Liza. I overslept.â
âItâs okay, Mommy.â
Janelle heard Peter crying from his room. âDamn it. Heâs probably soaked. Baby, I know I should take you in today, even though itâs later than sin. But, Iâm so tired. Letâs play hooky today, okay?â
âOkay. I can help you with Peter if you like.â
âWould you do that for me? That would be so nice.â
âSure. Want me to get his bottle?â
âYeah, thatâd be great. Iâm going to change him then you can watch your shows while I do some work. Howâs that sound?â
âSuper-duper, Mommy.â
âGreat. Well, at least youâre feeling super-duper. Mommyâs head hurts.â
âSorry. Iâll kiss it and make it better.â Liza kissed her motherâs forehead before heading downstairs to grab Peterâs bottle.
âAww. Thatâs so sweet.â
Janelle made Liza some pancakes and sausages. Peter even tried his hand at dipping a bit of pancake in syrup but only managed to make a very sticky mess of things. Janelle laughed and used at least twelve baby wipes to de-syrup her son.
The kids played and Janelle worked. Then Janelle played with the kids. They ate lunch. Everyone took a nap. Then it started all over again. Janelle hadnât had so much fun in quite a while. But around three oâclock both Liza and Peter were looking tired. And they should have, too. Theyâd spent a long time playing. âAlright, Liza, letâs get Peter in his bed. Then you need to take a nap, too.â Liza frowned but nodded despite the fact that she wanted to keep playing.
As Liza was climbing into her bed to nap she reached up and hugged Janelle. âI love you, Mommy.â
âWell, I love you, too.â
âMommy, if I do something bad will you love me?â
âOf course, honey. Thereâs nothing you can do thatâs so bad, I wouldnât love you.â
âWhat about Daddy?â
âWhat?â She sat down on Lizaâs bed. âWhy would you ask that?â
âJust because.â
âLiza, is there something you need to tell me? Something maybe that Daddy did?â
Liza looked around her mother and nodded. âYeah.â
Janelle bristled. Oh, my God. Stay calm. Stay calm. âLiza, did Daddy do something bad?â
Liza nodded.
A rush of nervous energy pulsed through Janelle. âDid he do something bad to⊠you? Did he touch or anything?â
âNo, Mommy. Not me.â
Janelle sighed but in the next moment she felt an even greater anxiety. âDid Daddy do something to Peter? Did he hit him or touch him?â
âNo, Mommy.â
Janelle let out a long relieved breath. âWell, if Daddy didnât do anything to you or to Peter. What did Daddy do?â
Liza frowned and looked down at the floor. She pulled her motherâs head close to her and whispered in her ear. âHe has their shoes.â
âWhat?â
âDaddy loves their shoes. Theyâre in a little box. In his workroom.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âI donât want to say anymore. You might not love Daddy if I do.â
Janelle rubbed her temples. âI understand. Itâs fine. Iâm glad you told me.â Janelle kissed Lizaâs forehead. âNow you go on and take a nap, okay?â
Janelle looked down at Lizaâs floor and saw her shoes, still in a neat line along the edge of her bed. She left and made her way downstairs to her husbandâs office. âWhat did she mean? Heâs got their shoes in a little box in his office?â She sat down at his desk and stared around the room.
The bookcase was filled with theology and philosophy books. There was no little box. She opened up his desk drawers. No little box. Janelle spied his file cabinet and crossed the room. âWhat did you mean, Liza? What little box?â She pulled open each drawer of the filing cabinet. âThereâs no little box in here.â She was frazzled.
Then she happened to look down and saw a box by the couch. She pulled off the lid and found several porn magazines. âOh, my God. You are losing your mind Janelle.â She picked up the stack of magazines and found two Penthouse magazines and one that looked even trashier called âHills and Moundsâ. Oh my God. Itâs porn. Thatâs all. Oh, thank God.â
She started laughing like she was mad. âI canât believe I let myself get so worked up over something that has such a normal explanation. Oh, my God.â She opened one of the magazines and sure enough saw that most every explicit picture had a woman in some sort of degrading pose and she was wearing tacky high heels. âWell, I guess I should be mad. But Iâm not.â She couldnât help but laugh.
âOh poor Liza. She probably caught Wade in here doing something he should have been a bit more careful about and Liza probably thought, well, damn, I donât know what she thought. Itâll
