This is a compilation of my grandmother's life based on actual events. She struggled much of her life to embrace the little identity she had after her mother's murder and find answers about her family history. Along the way she discovered more than she bargained for. She overcame abuse, lost loves, and encountered new opportunities with an open heart and mind in order to climb over every hurdle. We complain about daily and trivial issues when her life was overflowing with turmoil.

Annabelle wasn’t a normal sixteen year old girl. She didn’t do what normal girls her age did, instead she rode horses. She lives on the her family Ranch. She’s been racing since she was six years old. She is known world wide for it. She was placed first in every race thanks to her horse Skyler. Skyler is a beautiful Morgan Appaloosa mix. Skyler has been through everything with Annabelle. From her Grandmother’s death to her Brother’s marriage. Annabelle hasn’t found something that isn’t fixed by a lap around the race track. Then tragedy strikes. When Annabelle has an accident and becomes paralyzed from the waist down, she is told she will never ride again. She goes above and beyond to finish the dream that she has started. It only takes one girl and one dream to do the impossible.

Impressions of a Nepalese family in Kathmandu during a 6-week visit over the holidays.

"What were you doing in Mr. Olsens office Rahnee!?"
"Nothing he asked for me Mrs. Olsen I promise".
Mrs.Olsen looked at me with her bold green eyes. Her long brown hair hung down her back and her bold red lipstick scared the hell out of me. She gripped the belt tighter to her hands as she grabbed my chin and forced me to look into her surreptitious eyes.
"Tell me the truth Rahnee!"
"I promise Mrs. Olsen!"
Tears ran from my eyes as Mrs. Olsen looked at me close.
"Pull down your pants".
More tears fell hard like a waterfall as I pulled down my pants. My short black hair was now sweaty tangled strands. I bent over as a hard belt buckle hit my butt.
"Ah!"
I wailed in pain.
She was so stupid. I loathed Mrs. Olsen, she always beat me but never did she listen to me of what I had to say. I can hear her words rang in my head.
"You're a lousy bitch. I'm sending yo ass back tomorrow morning!"

Family members, especially grandparents are a valuable source of inspiration. I grew up listening to my maternal grandmother's stories about her life, about my mother and what it was like to live in the Dominican Republic during a dictatorship. This memoir is a conversation I had with her not long after I returned from traveling to Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Life isn't sweet, but it doesn't have to be completely bitter. It is what we make of it and these poems and stories try to portray just that. That is why I have titled this book Dulces de Coco or Coconut Candies.
This is a combination of the stories and poems that I have written. Many of the pieces in this book are inspired by my childhood, the stories my relatives have told me and my culture.
