The story picks up years later where The Dilemma for Men ends. In this story, the death of Mary's daughter, Melissa, from an auto accident many years ago has left her devastated. Mary too, the driver that night, was very badly hurt. Her life, body, and mind, having been reconstructed from the same accident, has never felt right. Then one night a man comes screaming into her life. On that night a disturbing clue creates doubt for Mary as to her past and present life. What she finds that night is just the beginning of a journey that leads to a very painful truth.

And the judges in the Council have a vendetta. At the least, she could lose her position in the Surface Patrol. At worst, she could end up in prison for a crime she did not commit.
