Jason returned home, leaving everything as it was. He stumbled into his bed and fell into a deep sleep. The fight and the use of the power had taken a lot out of him, even with the rest heâd gotten earlier. He wanted to wake up and find out that everything was fine. He wanted to feel good about things. All he could feel right now was pain and regret. He needed something that could help him forget everything. He needed Sarah Williams.
The following day, Jason awoke, nearly forgetting he had school. He trudged his way to the school and went through the daily routine. His classes seemed to become less and less important every day. The language classes were the stupidest. He spoke every language just fine. Lucky he had that talent. The history class was another review over something he had read about years ago. He just wanted the bell to ring so he could put his books away and find Sarah. He made his way through the hallway, still walking funny due to his injuries. When he went to go to Sarahâs locker, he ran into Kris instead.
âWhatâs up, dude?â Kris said casually.
âHey, man,â Jason replied, âNot a lot. Trying to find my girlfriend.â
âOh yeah? You two got a hot date tonight?â
âNot really. I was gonna ask her if she wanted to do something tonight though.â
âHey, hey. I understand. You donât have to share your sex life with me if ya donât want. Itâs all good.â
âI donât have s-,â Jason began, but Kris began talking again.
âIâm just messinâ with ya, man,â Kris cut him off, grinning, âBut yeah, whatâs her last class?â
âI think itâs some sort of English class. I donât really remember.â
âOh, well if sheâs got Young, then the rest of this week is gonna suck for her. We just got hit with a huge research paper we have to do. If she isnât at her locker, she is probably at that library.â
âAlright then, thanks Kris.â
âHey, anytime buddy. Catch ya around?â
âYeah, see ya.â
Jason walked down the hall and found the library doors. Sure enough, sitting at one of the desks was the beautiful Sarah Williams. She was reading a through a rather large book. She looked very bored and a little tense. Jason set his bag down and came up behind her, trying not to disturb her studying. He placed his hands on her shoulders and began to rub them. She loved it when he would give her massages. He could feel her loosen up and smile. She put her hand on his and rubbed it. She looked over her shoulder at him, as he gave her a small smile.
âGot a big project?â Jason asked.
âUgh, yeah,â Sarah groaned, âItâs pretty lame. I donât ever want to hear the word Persia again,â
âMaybe you could take a break for a little while. We could grab a smoothie or something? They have your favorite special today.â
âYeahâŠI could use a break. Sounds good to me.â
The coffee house was a few blocks from the school. It was a small business that sold just about every kind of drink imaginable. Jason and Sarah walked hand in hand to on the sidewalks. She told him about her day and how she had nearly been murdered by her lab partner in her advanced chemistry class. The girl had very shaky hands and had nearly spilled corrosive acids on Sarah. Jason teased her a little bit, but was glad she was alright. They talked about random parts of their day all the way to the coffee shop. Once they got their, She and Jason took a seat in two comfortable leather chairs near the window. Sarah ordered a strawberry and banana smoothie, while he ordered a vanilla and chocolate malt. They sat at the table for awhile just laughing about things, when Jason saw another news report of the Anderson crisis. Jasonâs mind immediately went to Jackson and the events that had happened the day before. Sarah must have felt a change in his mood, because she instantly became worried.
âSomething wrong, Jay?â she asked. He loved it when she called him that.
âNoâŠitâs nothing,â He answered.
âWell it canât be ânothingâ. Itâs alright to talk about it. Iâm all ears.â
âItâs justâŠyesterday I got some bad news.â
âWhat kind of news?â
âMy brotherâŠwas killed yesterday.â
âOh my god! Jason, thatâs horrible! How come you never mentioned you had a brother?â
âWell, the truth is that, until yesterday, I hated my brother. He wasnât much of a brother at all. He never once cared for me. He left me with my uncle after my parents died and never looked back. From there on out, every time I saw him we just fought.â
âDid something happen between you two that set this fighting off?â
âHe started the fighting. He thought he was doing the right thing by treating my like dirt. I swear sometimes he even wanted to kill me. But thatâs just the thing. I hated him for as long as I knew him. In the end, thoughâŠI only resented myself. I made so many mistakes and instead of looking for a solution, I just retaliated and continued to fight with him. And nowâŠitâs too late to fix things.â
Sarah grabbed Jasonâs hand and squeezed it tight. He looked into her compassionate blue eyes and could see that she cared about this just about as much as he did. She was always so sweet and loving to him. If only he could just tell her the rest of his pain inside. If only he could say that he, himself, had killed his brother. But he had ignored his uncleâs words one time, and that was one time too many. Plus, it could put her life in danger if anything else went wrong. He wouldnât let that happen. She meant too much to him.
âJason, I am so sorry.â She said sincerely, âI want to say something to make it easier for you, but I donât know what I could say that could make anything better.â
âJust spending time with you helps. I love you, Sarah.â Jason said with a weak smile.
âI love you too, Jason.â
Jason and Sarah starred into each other eyes, getting lost as they did. They could both feel that they had a strong bond. Jason never wanted to leave her side. He wanted to take her away to a place where they could be alone forever. She was his everything. He could feel her heart rate pick up when ever she was around him. He knew that she felt the same way. If only he could find a way to freeze time. Every time they were together, each hour felt like a minute. Each minute felt like an hour. He wondered why good things couldnât happen in slow motion.
Above the door to the building, a small bell hung that would ring whenever a customer entered or exited. When Jason heard the bell ring this time, he could feel someone with a quick heart rate enter. Their heat signature was riddled with anxiety and worry. Jason looked away from his wondrous girlfriend and to the door. It was Matt. He was looking around the room and finally spotted Jason. He motioned for Jason to come over to him. He didnât like where this was going. He told Sarah he would be back in a moment, and with a smile she dismissed him. He briskly walked over to Matt and saw the stress all over his face.
âWhatâs wrong?â Jason asked.
âHavenât you heard?â Matt gasped. He must have run here, âSomething went wrong in the city.â
âWhat kind of something?â
âSomeone broke into the Midwest Central Bank. Theyâve taken hostages.â
âWhat?â Jason asked outraged, âWhen did this happen?â
âJust now,â Matt explained, âThe police are at a standoff, but the robbers are in complete control.â
Jason looked back to Sarah who was sipping the rest of her smoothie. He didnât want to leave her, but there were lives at stake. He couldnât let innocent people die. It would once again strike fear into the hearts of the world. They wouldnât believe in their Savior anymore. He had a duty and no matter how he felt about Sarah, he had to stop this.
âI need you to keep her company. Tell her Iâll be back soon. I had a âfamily issueâ to take care of. Donât let her leave. I wonât be long.â Jason said.
âAlright,â Matt agreed.
Jason passed by Matt and out the door. Matt watched him take off down the street quickly. With a leap, he jumped high into the air and took off for the bank. He looked at Sarah, who was now sitting alone at the table. He sat down where Jason had been and she gave him a confused look.
âSoâŠhow do you feel about baseball?â Matt asked attempting to strike a conversation. In his mind he could only think âGood luck, Jasonâ.

Jason unzipped his grey jacket and tossed it behind him. It blew away in the wind. He was now wearing his jeans and Aspen shirt. No one knew him any other way than with this uniform. He didnât want anyone to remember what heâd been wearing that day and piece things together. He masked his presence and continued on his way to the bank. He could see the flashing lights of the sirens as he grew close. This was a little bigger than he thought. There were about fifteen police cars and a barricade blocking off the public. He noticed the police chief yelling talking into a radio and projecting his voice so that the robbers could hear him. He was trying the normal hostage-negotiation procedures. Jason could see that the robbers had the doors blocked off and windows spray-painted so that no one could see inside. The bank was large, but didnât have a lot of ways to enter.
He scanned the area and found that there were twenty people inside. He could see that eight were standing upright and the other twelve were on their knees. The upright ones had to be the robbers, which also told Jason that they were in pairs of two. Two were covering the main entrance; while another two covered the staircase went to the roof. Two of the robbers paced behind the hostages, keeping them in check. Below, Jason could see two more in the underground safe. Jason knew that the front entrance would be a bad choice, but the roof had a good vantage point for him. As long as he didnât alert the two guards the staircase, the hostages would be safe.
He flew up to the rooftop and found the door. There was a back room that had the staircase in it. If he took out the first two thugs quickly, he might be able to keep the element of surprise. He poked the door with his finger nail and slid it along the door, making an irritating screeching noise. The two thugs, as expected, heard it and moved closer to the door. They were down in a crouch and each likely had guns. Jason waited for them to be just close enough, then, with a strong kick, sent the door off the hinges and into the two thugs. The door sailed right into the two robbers and smashed them against the wall, knocking them unconscious.
He quickly moved into the building and scanned to see if anyone had noticed. Lucky for him, he was still undetected. He moved around the corner and into the main room. He hid behind the counter that separated him from the rest of the robbers. To his right, there was a door that led down stairs. He had to time all of this just right for it to work.
