Prologue:
Yes I had a beautiful life. I had many friends and a loving family. Everything was new to me every day though I fear that one day it will be too new for me. I am a normal typical 17 year-old, my friends say I am too ambitious and stubborn at times. My name is Crystal Beckham and I am a Californian girl. I love to play drums, and enjoy sunsets at the beaches. Something I will hate is someone or something trying to change what I love the most. And this time it’s my parents. Yes, they want to move to New York City. The city that never sleep, the Big Apple! This is the day I feared the most. When my parents broke the news to me my stubbornness, like my friends always said, acted up. I threatened to run away and dorm in college. That never worked obviously my parents know me too well. I even refused to eat but it lasted for only 2 days. When everything failed I tried giving the same old silent treatment. Well that absolutely didn’t work they were obviously too busy to even notice me. My mother worked 5 days straight as an 8th grade teacher and by the time she comes home she’s loaded with work. Sometimes I think she doesn’t have the time to breathe! My dad works 7 days straight as a detective. I have to admit everything is pretty cool when your dad is a detective. I even sneaked a couple of looks in his secret lap top. But everything was caused by him of course. His amazing job leads to something absolutely awful. His job made him move to New York, where there were better cases and better money. So obviously he has to lug us around as well. This is really unfair! I’d never leave California! I would hate to leave my small tight-nit neighborhood. I will miss my best friends, my teachers and the sunsets. Hopefully something good would come out of going to New York City but I highly doubt it.
Chapter 1:
“Crystal, sweetie please hand me that bag” she said tiredly. “No” Crystal retorted coolly. She knew very well that she was hurting her mom by answering her so insolently. Her mother sighed, “Don’t be like that, you know that it’s hard for me too”. “No it’s not!” Crystal snapped angrily, “you don’t understand me!”And you’ll never will! You don’t know how hard it is for me!” “Crystal now tired her self angrily flopped down on the sofa. “Well it’s hard for me too! But you don’t see me complaining” Her mother protested. “I have to leave my job and find a new one!” she exclaimed, “but I am not complaining because I know that it’s necessary for all of us!” With nothing to say Crystal bolted up. She left upstairs to her room angrily. She slammed the door loudly and kicked a pile of clothes that needed to be packed irritably. She hated that she had to admit she was being selfish and she hated to realize she can be wrong. Crystal lumped on her bed staring at the ceiling. After a few minutes her dad knocked on the door. “Can I come in?” he asked gently. “Come in” Crystal muttered. Her dad walked in looking tired and he had dark bags under his eyes though he wore a warm smile. He walked over the clothes and sat on the edge of the bed. Crystal put her arm on her eyes to cover her tears that were welling up. “You should get ready the car will come in about 2 hours”. Crystal didn’t say anything. “I know how you love California” he started. “I even remember those days when you were a little girl and we used to go see the sunsets at the beaches, we still do that now” he chuckled. “This place holds too many memories” he sighed looking around; “It breaks my heart to leave”. “But look at the bright side” he spoke cheerfully, “we have lots more to experience!” Crystal slowly retrieved her arm from her face. “I know that because of me, both of you guys are upset”. “I know that it’s selfish” he murmured. “I am really sorry”. He looked at his daughter anxiously for a response but Crystal remained silent. Her father’s face was filled with disappointment as he walked towards the door. Crystal sat up quickly then said “Dad?” He stopped at his tracks then looked back. “Yeah its okay, I will pack up now” Crystal said, her voice quivering. Her father looked pleased and smile nodding his head. He then left after he heard his phone ring. Crystal was glad that her father didn’t make her feel selfish and wrong like her mother. Shrugging off all the anger crystal began folding her clothes. After she folded her clothes which surprisingly took a long time she reached for her suitcases. Her things were neatly complied in the suitcases. Crystal tiredly stood up and walked forward toward her wall. Slowly she peeled off her stickers, pictures, and poster of the wall. It gave her a sickening feeling to peel them off. She was almost at the verge of tears. After she peeled off all her wall hangings she placed them in her side aero postale bag. She took a good look at her empty room. There was nothing left but a small desk and her bed. It felt strange to see it this clean and hollow. Her mom came in the room; she was pleased to see that Crystal packed up her things. “I thought you would never pack up!” She exclaimed. “You have 5 suitcases!” she laughed. “Here let me help you with that” Crystal said as her mother was tugging the two heavy suitcases at once. She grinned then said “thank you”. Slowly they took the suitcases one by one downstairs. Her dad’s phone rang, he quickly picked it up. After saying “hello” and “we will be there” he hung up. There outside he said nervously. This was it they were leaving. 4 men came in the living room and started loading the suitcases into the big van. After all the bag and suitcases were in it was time for them to get in the car. Crystal slowly headed out. Her parents were already inside the car. She took a long look at her light blue house. This was going to be hard she thought looking around the neighborhood. Crystal can feel tears streaming down her cheeks. The car honked. Realizing that she was holding everyone up, she wiped her tears and ran inside the van. She continued looking at the house as the van was slowly driving away. Then the van sped up and her house soon disappeared. Crystal turned away from the window and sat back. Her mother who was next to her took her hand and gave an encouraging squeeze. Crystal smiled then looks out the window. It was going to be a long drive, from her house to the airport would take 2-3 hours depending on the traffic. “I wonder if our furniture is already there!” Her mother said excitedly. “Jade, of course it’s going to be there, I mean we ordered them like 3 weeks ago”, her father pointed out as he busily look through is laptop. “Well I hope New York furniture is good” she said. Crystal’s father sighed and rolled eyes. After 45 minutes there was a big traffic jam. Sounds of the horns pounded through Crystal’s eardrums. “Oh make it stop”! I screamed. Crystal’s mother looked very irritable and gave angry looks at the person behind who was honking non stop. Crystal’s dad tried very hard to concentrate on something he was writing. “Jason do something!” Crystal’s mother cried. “I don’t know what to do”! He exclaimed. “Hey stop the honking!” Crystal heard a man screaming. But the people in the cars didn’t give they just wanted to reach their destination. “Try to sleep honey” Her mother spoke softly. Crystal gave her mother an incredulous look, “in the middle of all this?” “Here” she said patting her lap. Crystal laid her head on her mother’s lap and closed her eyes. Surprisingly the world seemed to fade away and slowly she drifted off to another world.
