rose in volume, “I don’t have to tell him.”

Alexei stood, taking up the space between us, and my fingers itched to touch his scarred skin. He crossed his arms, “He will understand, he is your mate.”

“Stop telling me that he will understand” I heard my own voice echo around the bathroom, I was yelling, “I haven’t even told him about the fucking failed mating bond, do you think he’ll understand that?”

His face fell, his emerald eyes glowed as they swallowed my dark ones, “So, you admit you’ve had an unsuccessful mating?”

He was closer than before, than he has ever been, and before I could stop myself, I ran my finger along his raised skin. I felt his body tense under my touch, “What happened here?”

I watched his own fingers grip his arms with white-knuckle strength, stopping himself, and he breathed, “Kier wanted to test me against Healers.”

My frown was harsh, “Why did they keep doing it?” I added another finger to his skin, feeling both the smooth, and the harsh scars.

His eyes flickered at me, and he grabbed my fingers, holding them away from his body, “Because that’s who Kier is, he didn’t care how much he marked me.”

Almost as if he snapped me out of my trance, I stepped away from him abruptly, and started for the door, “I’m sorry, I’m a bit out of it” I muttered, “I haven’t been sleeping.”

I didn’t give him the chance to respond as I flew out of the hazy room, my legs not stopping at my room, and I ran down the stairs. My skin was burning. I had to cool down.

Going through the sliding doors, past Wren’s grave, and into the long grass behind the oak trees, my legs begging to run away but I stopped just far enough that I could still see the house.

My hands ran through my hair as I filled my lungs with the clean air, “Why did I do that?” I asked myself.

“Where are you going?” I flinched as Alexei came through the long grass.

“Curse the moon, stop following me,” I turned away from him, refusing to let myself get distracted again.

“I followed you into a burning room,” his voice was hoarse, and it made me turn back to him, “I would follow you anywhere.”

My skin prickled. My wolf was restless behind our barrier. I let out the breath I didn’t realise I was holding, and I shook my head, “You shouldn’t follow me, the moon is against me.”

His teeth were glowing in the dark as he laughed, a short singular laugh that travelled through my entire body, “I don’t think the moon is against anyone.”

“She wouldn’t have made me kill those children if she didn’t” was all I whispered into the night.

His smile fell, and he shook his head, “If I could go back, and save you from this torment,” he took a step closer to me, and I forgot how to breathe again, “I would kill them myself.”

I rushed towards him. My mouth crashing into his. He held no hesitation, he grabbed me the second I grabbed him, and it was electric. It was nothing like August’s kiss. I was enveloped in his warmth.

I was burning alive. Every thought left my mind. My skin was glowing with my flames, my desperation couldn’t meet his, and he didn’t stop me when I pulled back with a gasp.

My hand clamped over my mouth in shock, in disgust, and I ran away from him.

August was my mate. I betrayed my mate. I betrayed August. I almost threw up at the thought of him finding out, and I found myself finding the guest suite that Sawyer promised, I couldn’t face Alice like this.

She would know something was wrong instantly, and I couldn’t lie to her.

The suite was done, Sawyer told me last night, and I knew no one would find me here. The room was massive, so much bigger than my current room and I tugged my shirt over my head as I entered the ensuite.

The shower was open, dual shower heads were flush against the ceiling, and a large tub sat proudly in the corner. Misted windows covered the entire wall, floor to ceiling, and there was no way this was all made for me.

My hair was heavy against my back as I held the large towel around me, I left the bathroom, and flinching as Alexei stood at the closed door.

My mouth opening to tell him to get out, but he was faster, “Do you ever think about why August hasn’t said anything about you being sick every night?”

I watched his deadly scowl form on his face as I rolled my eyes, “Because he doesn’t know.”

“No, your mate would know!” he shouted, “Your mate would see how thin you are, how tired you look, how terrible you look—”

“Gee, thanks for the confidence boost!” I couldn’t handle this, and I felt the irritation rise in my chest.

“How could he not know this is happening to his mate?” Alexei was stepping closer to me, and my skin was tingling with the anticipation, “He would have to know, he just doesn’t care, and what does that tell you?!”

I shook my head, my eyes capturing his, “Get out.”

“He isn’t your mate!” he rose his arms in exasperation.

“How would you know?!” I was in his face, my voice matching the volume of his, and I watched as his hand raise to my shoulder.

His fingers ran across my healed mating mark, across the dark dancing lines and my skin rose in bumps, “Because this doesn’t happen to mates,” his voice was back to normal volume.

His fingers lingered around the base of my neck, creeping behind my hair, and his eyes were glowing down at me. I breathed, letting him grip the back of my head as he pulled me to him, and I didn’t stop him.

Our mouths devoured one another. I felt our previous anger disappear instantly as it turned into hunger, my hands ran along his skin, and I smiled as he shuttered against me.

There was no room between us, we were drinking each other in, and I felt my legs move backwards, towards the bed. I pulled Alexei with me, I let myself fall onto the bed as the back of my legs hit the bed-frame, and he followed me instantly.

My hands tugged at his sweatpants, my fingers searching for the skin underneath, Alexei’s hands were soft, slow, and tender. Roaming over my body, leaving a scorching trail, and he pulled away from me, to look down at me, “Are you sure?”

“Take this towel off before I change my mind” I breathed as I pulled him back down to me.

He tried to be slow but ended up ripping the towel off me, growling as his lips kissed my breast. Growling at the sight of the new skin he hasn’t touched, and his hands ran from my ankle to my hip, “I dreamt of these long legs wrapped around me.”

I flipped us, my legs straddling him as he ran his teeth over the outer edges of my breast, and he muttered under his breath as he entered me. My hips thrusted against him, he gripped my hips to stop me, and my body curved into him instantly, he pulled away as the necklace I forgot about touched his face. An emotion flickered over his face as he took in the sight of the silver sun, “Of course you got it back,” laughter at the back of his throat.

His hands cupped my breasts as he reached up to kiss the small pendant, and then both of my breast before he flipped us back, his scarred skin grazing against my nipples, “Do you want it back?” I gasped out of breath.

His devilish lips wandered down my waist, tasting my hips, stopping only to look back at me, “No, it’s yours now.”

I threw my head back as he took me in his mouth, my fingers gripping his dark hair as he devoured me, and his emeralds eyes watched me become undone. His fingers entered me, I fought the urge to scream his name, and his free hand reaching up to grip the base of my neck. The pleasure was drowning me, swallowing me whole, and every thought left my body.

I dragged him up to my mouth, reaching between us, and putting him inside me. We both groaned as he rocked into me, torturously slow, and his teeth grazed against my neck. I wanted him to bite me, I wanted him to destroy me.

I clawed at his back, “Faster” I muttered under my breath, and my entire body tingled as he growled in response. His hands held mine above my head, intertwined fingers, and the entire world was disappearing.

Our hips were thrusting in sync, my pleasure was washing over me, and my lungs were burning as I forgot to breathe. He drove in deeper; my voice was hoarse, and breathless as I breathed, “Alex.”

His teeth clamped onto my neck, almost biting me but he didn’t, and I felt the desperation grow inside me, “Bite me,” I shoved my already marked shoulder in his direction, angling my chin away for better access, “No one would be able to tell.”

His delicious dimples flashed as his grin was wider than I’ve ever seen it, “Say please, sweet Eden.”

I wouldn’t beg for my life but I would beg for this. I mimicked his smile, and breathed, “Please, Alex.”

His smile dropped, and he gripped the back of my neck as his teeth sunk into my failed mating bond. There was no pain. There was only pleasure. It washed over me so aggressively that my vision went black, my hearing hazy, and all I remember is Alexei’s hand over my mouth to stop his name being heard across the house.

I woke up in the dark, the curtains were closed, and my heart was hammering in my chest but I felt a large hand land over my heart, “You’re okay.”

Like a lifeline, I was dragged back to shore, back to the warm bed that we both shared. I turned to face Alexei in the dark, the future eating slowly at my heart. I knew this couldn’t last, August was my mate, but I was surprised when my eyes burned with tears as I thought of what would happen in the morning.

Another hand came up, and got lost in my hair as I felt his lips on my cheek, “Don’t think about it yet.”

“I don’t like the dark” I whispered my secret into the night, “It reminds me of the children.”

Covers shifted, I felt Alexei leave the bed, and then I heard curtains scrape against their rails. The moon pushed her light into the room, I could make out Alexei’s naked form as he opened the rest of the curtains before returning to the bed.

His arms wrapping around me, and I felt the sob in my chest, wanting to escape but I cleared my throat instead, and allowed the darkness to take me back.

I jerked awake to a knock at my door, “Eden, are you in there?”

It was Miles.

My neck snapped to see Alexei gone, the hurt stabbed my heart for two painful seconds before I jumped up, “Yeah, I’m just having a shower.”

“Thank the moon, no one knew where you were” Miles laughed, “I’ll see you at lunch.”

I hurried to the ensuite, turning the water on, and flinched as Alexei’s hands grabbed my waist, “I thought you left.”

His lips were kissing my shoulder, “I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”

I was grateful for the shower, it hid the tears in my eyes, and I turned to face him, “This can’t happen again.”

His smile was wide as he leaned into me, pushing me against the shower wall, and his hands wandered down, “I know, I just need to say goodbye.”

I gasped as his fingers found the apex of my pleasure, my hands struggled to hold onto his slippery skin, and he groaned as his fingers entered me. His grabbed my legs, pulling me onto
