Its my first day of college and I don’t know anyone. I was walking to Economics. I looked down at my schedule for a second and then my books and another girls were scattered on the ground.
“I’m sorry.” I said and picked up some of her papers.
“No, its my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” She replied. When I was picking up her papers it was like love at first sight. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She looked up and caught me looking at her and I just smiled like a dumb founded fool but I guess thats what love does to you.
“Can I walk you to your class? What do you have first block?” I asked her.
“I have Economics.” She said. A sigh of relief flooded me.
“Me too.” I said and then walked her to our class. We walked together every day. We didn’t date until I asked her to a movie.
“So Melinda, what are you doing this Friday?” I asked her as we sat in our seats first block.
“Nothing, why?” She asked. I was about to ask her when the bell rang and the teacher told us to be quiet and take out our notes for the test. I tried to ask again after class.
“I wondered what you were doing this Friday because I was wondering-,” I began to say but then her Cheerleading squad showed up and picked her up and took her outside.
“We can talk later.” She screamed from the crowd that surrounded her. I waved good bye. I thought that I would never get the chance to ask her. A day later she showed up at my room. “Can I come in?” She asked in the innocent soft voice that she held within.
“Yeah, sure.” I told her.
“What did you have to ask me?” She said with a chuckle. I guess she was thinking about all the times I tried to ask her and people or things kept getting in the way.
“I was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies with me?” I asked in one quick breath because I was worried another thing might get in the middle.
“Like on a date?” She asked me and I nodded my head because my heart was pounding so fast I didn’t even think I could speak if I wanted to. “Sure.” She said. After that moment I was sure I was in love. We have been seeing each other since then. Its been four years and I have been faithful the whole time. This is the first time we would be apart since College. She left almost a year ago and is returning now. I can’t believe I get to see her. Its been at least a year and I get to see her. As soon as the plane landed I felt my legs weaken then I saw her walk off the plane. She had to go see her sister in Jersey. She stayed longer than she planned but I finally get to see her. I saw her leave the plane. She ran to me and I caught her.
“Will, I’m so happy to be in your arms again.” Melinda said to me.
“Mel, I love you so much. Never leave again.” I told her. She hopped off of me and looked me in the eyes. I touched her cheek. Its been so long since I’ve seen her. So long since I touched her. We have called each other every week but its nothing compared to touching her and feeling her warmth. We held hands and walked to my car.
“So how was the trip?” I asked. She has changed so much. Her red hair has lightened because of the sun there. She has lost some weight. I was just so happy to have her back.
“Great. Kaitlin is doing great. Her newborn is doing well too. Aww I wish you could have seen her. Her name is Emillan. She has the most cute button nose.” Mel said.
“Thats great honey but I’m so happy your back home.” I told her while giving her another hug before going into the car. I still couldn’t believe she was away for so long. I felt like she was holding something back.
“Melinda.” I said.
“Yes William.” She replied. I was scared to ask this question but I had to find out.
“Is there something you want to tell me?” I asked. She looked worried. She waited a while before she answered.
“No William.” She said unsurely. I didn’t say anything back. The car ride home was quiet. Not a word. When we got home and ready for bed Melinda would even touch me. I tried to wrap my arms around her while we slept but she kept rolling over to get further away. I got irritated.
“Melinda? I know your awake.” I said. She didn’t answer so I rolled her over. She had tears in her eyes. “Whats wrong?” I asked her.
“I’m pregnant.” She said with her face red with tears.
“How is that possible? We haven’t had sex since before you left which was almost a year ago.” I said then it hit me like a missile. It wasn’t my baby. “Its not mine.” I stated and she nodded her head. I sat up and leaned against the back board with my hands covering my head. I couldn’t believe she cheated on me. We have been together for about five years. We were committed to each other. I didn’t want to believe it.
“William, I’m so sorry.” Melinda said to me. I didn’t reply. “We have to talk about this.” She said.
“What is there to talk about?” I asked. I was over whelmed with anger.
“I love you, William. I don’t love anyone else. You know I would never do this on purpose! I would never hurt you like this.” She said. Her voice was shaken because she was crying so hard. I know she mean’t what she said but that doesn’t make it any better. I know that every word she said was true but that doesn’t change what she did.
“Then why did you?” I asked her.
“I don’t know.” She said.
“I have been faithful. One year of no sex or kisses from the one I love. I could stand it but you couldn’t. That makes me think that it might happen again.” I told her. She started to cry even more.
“No Will, I promise it was just a mistake. I will never let it happen again. I love you baby.” She told me. I had one tear. It rolled down my cheek and hit the bed like shattered glass. I got up and walked out of the room. I shut the door behind me. My friend Blake met me at the bar.
“She said what?” He said with surprisement as I told him what she had said to me. “Man, I’m sorry. I know Melinda and I know she wouldn’t do something like this on purpose.” He said to me. I took another slug.
“Hit me again.” I told the bartender.
“I know. How could she be pregnant? We talked about having kids and she said she wanted to wait. I just can’t believe it. What should I do?” I asked Blake with confidence that he will know the right thing to do.
“I don’t know. Do you want to kick her out?” He asked me.
“No. I love her.” I told him.
“That whore needs to get lost. You don’t deserve someone who can’t be faithful. You deserve better than that. I’m telling you that that skank is going to do it again.” He told me and I knew it was the truth but I can’t tell her no. I went home a few drinks later to think. Melinda wasn’t there. I sat down and looked through the pictures of our past. It hasn’t ended up like I thought it would. By now I planned to have purposed. We would have had a child. A beautiful baby girl like she wanted and we would name her Nichole Lynn, just like she wanted. But I guess its not what she wants anymore. Its what I want.
I heard her come in around two in the morning. I could tell she was drunk because she had bumped into the coffee table. An hour later I went down stairs. I saw she had made a bed on the couch. I know that the baby was not mine but just because it wasn’t mine I didn’t want it to die or suffer. She can’t do it on her own and I know that for a fact. She was irresponsible for drinking while pregnant. I went down stairs and picked her up. I carried her up stairs and put her in our bed. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in the bed with her or sleep on the couch. I decided to sleep on the couch. When I woke up Melinda was standing over me. She had make up smeared over her face and her mascara had run half way down her cheek. Her arms were crossed and she still had on the same clothes from yesterday.
“Thank you.” She said wiping some of the make up off with her sleeve.
“For what?” I asked in the middle of a yawn. I got up and stretched. Any other day after I would stretch I would give her a hug and a kiss then get my coffee. Today I stretched and then got my coffee. She followed behind me.
“For putting me in your bed.” Then she corrected herself. “Our bed. That was sweet of you.” She said to me.
“Just cause the baby is not mine doesn’t mean I want you to kill it by drinking.” I said. She looked down.
“Do you love me still?” She asked me. I wasn’t sure what I was going to say. I walked up to her and put one hand on her cheek and wiped the tear that was about to fall.
“Melinda, I will always love you. No matter what.” I stated. She smiled but I looked away. I started to take my hand off her face but she put her hand on top of it.
“Please.” She said. Her eyes just killed me inside. They looked as if she’s stuck in a burning building and decided to jump. She had no hope left.
“Don’t.” I said in a quiet, soft voice. I walked out of the room. I got my news paper and drank my coffee. When I put the cup in the sink Melinda was gone. “Melinda?” I called through out the house but I got no reply. “Melinda!” I yelled louder but still no answer. I got in my car and drove miles and miles. I finally stopped when I saw this woman on the top of a bridge with passer bys stopping to see what was going to happen. I immediately stopped the car and got out. I ran to the top of the bridge. I screamed and screamed her to stop but I didn’t think she could hear me.
“Melinda.” I said once I got to the top. I didn’t know what to think. I had never thought that she would dream of hurting herself like this.
“Will.” She replied with a big smile but I didn’t smile back.
“What are you doing?” I asked her.
“I cant do it anymore. I can’t lose you.” She said. She took one foot off the edge of
