Together At Last
CHAPTER 1
There I was. Again, picking up Max from a bar. The first few times was okay but now he has made a habit of it every week. I guess the drinking didn’t bother me but what did was when he came home. Max had a tendency of having an anger problem when he was drunk. That's why I would stay in my room when we would get home. When I get to the club I see Max with a group of guys. They are the last people there. The bartender looked very annoyed. He came up to me and gave me Max’s keys and said that he tried to leave after having more than 5 beers and I wouldn’t let him go because I held up 3 fingers and he said I had 6. So I walked over to Max.
“Hey babe, don’t you look sexy tonight.” Max said as he grabs me and looks at his so called buddies.
“ Max, you called me for a reason. Lets go, now.” I said because I know if I stay there any longer I might get in trouble because of my age. Then a tall man walks over to me and ask to see my I.D and when I show it to him knowing that I'm only 16 he asks me to leave. I tried to explain to him that my boyfriend Max was drunk and called me to pick him up since the bartender took his keys. The tall man said that was fine and told me to take my time.
“Sarah, baby can we sit down and have a drink?” Max said to me winking at his friends as he put his hand around my waist.
“Max, darling you smell of beer and I'm taking you home now.” I told him smirking while moving his arm away from me.
With in the next 10 minuets we were in the car heading home. He was always quiet after being picked up from clubs because its kind of like having your baby sister pick you up since I'm only 16 and he is 19 he always felt bad that I was younger than him and was more mature. When we reached home Max turned on the TV and told me to get lost because I was annoying him. I thought this was pretty ironic seeing I never said anything to him. So I went to my room and study for the test tomorrow. Although I was only 16 I still made enough money to keep the apartment and stay in school. I tried to stay on the down low because I’m a foster child and my foster parents don’t care where I am. I found Max when I was 14 and he was 17. Max was understanding in the beginning. Then he began to be sort of mean. He didn’t care what he treated me like. When I was 15 I rented an apartment with Max and we have been living with each other since. Max helps me out a lot. When I’m in a store or something were I'm to young Max says that he is my brother and gets me out of trouble.
I’m almost done with school. I have one more year and I'm turning 17 in 4 months. Max had never gone to school. We met when I was taking my morning jog. I use to take jogs in the morning because my foster parents would always have morning sickness from being drunk.
Its now morning and as I'm getting ready for school Max comes out of his room and gets breakfast.
CHAPTER 2
“Hey, how did you sleep? Sorry, you had to come and pick me up, the stupid bartender took my keys away for having 8 beers.” He said like the bartender was out of line. I could tell that he was feeling bad that I had to come down at 2:30a.m to pick him up then study at 3:00a.m.
“Max we have to talk about this getting drunk thing.” I tried to say it were he wouldn’t get worried.
“Listen, I promise I won’t call you at night anymore to pick me up. Okay. Problem solved.” He said this with a grin like it should be taken lightly.
“Max I’m serious. I signed you up for an addicted class. They can help you with your problem.” I tried to say without yelling.
“No! I don’t have a problem. You! Now you have the problem. Sarah just cause you more mature and you have a job does not mean your better than me.” He said yelling. I felt hurt after he said that because I have cared and helped Max through everything.
“I’m doing this for you because I care. You have a drinking problem and this class will help.” I tried to get him to understand.
“Well, I’m not going and I don’t care what you say.” Max said with a nasty tone.
I said, “Thats it! Get out.”
“What?!?” Max said as if he thought I was joking but the sad part was I wasn’t. I wanted him out, if he was not going to get better than I don’t want to be with him.
“I’m serious. Get out! I don’t want you here. Don’t call me or text me. I’m done with you.” It really hurt to say that because I really did like Max.
He said while coming towards me, “Sarah you don’t mean that. I will go to the meeting I promise.” But by that time we both knew that it was too late.
The next day all of his things were out of the apartment. I never heard from him again. What makes me sad was when he left I saw something in his eyes. It wasn’t regret or sorrow it was relief. He was relieved that we weren’t together anymore.
A few weeks after Max left I found out I was pregnant. At first I didn’t believe it and Max was the only one I did anything with, so I new who the father was. I was so worried that my baby would grow up without a father. I grew up without any parents or anyone to love me and the thought of that happening to my child scared me. All these emotions crossed my mind and it was more than I could bear. I was thinking that I should tell my foster parents but then again they wouldn’t help. 3 months later when I started showing more of the baby I dropped out of school. I never got an education and I was pregnant at the age of 16. I didn’t know what to do.
CHAPTER 3
I have been working as an assistant at a law company. I have 2 months till my due date. Everywhere I go I feel like people are judging me. When people ask where Max went I say that we both have moved on. I really didn’t care if they believed me or not. When people stare I pretend that I don’t hear them talk. I pretend that I’m okay with all thats happening and I act like there is nothing wrong. I keep wondering when it will be over. I want to know when I can open my eyes. I think this is as hard as it gets. I no what it feels like to really cry. I no that the baby was no mistake and I will take care of it but I miss Max. I wish he was here for me. I wish he was here for the baby.
I have been depressed for a while. I don’t socialize very much. Since I'm seventeen I have one year until I'm officially done with my foster parents. Today is just another day. Today I do what I do everyday. Brush my teeth, eat, and read to the baby but today the phone rings. When I pick up the phone there is a woman’s voice on the other line. She tells me that she is my biological mother and they want to meet me. I didn’t know what to say. She told me her name was Mary and my fathers name was Scott. She said that giving me up was very hard but she was only 16. All I could think was that I would never give my baby girl up. I told my biological parents that I would like to meet them so we decided to meet at the Java Café on Johnson Street.
I’m so nervous. All I can think is that they will look at me and see that I am pregnant and wonder where my husband is. I walk into the Java Café and see a woman and man sitting at a booth and I go up to them.
“Mary, Scott?” I said hesitant. The woman has blonde, curly hair like me. We look so alike. I felt like crying. The man had my green eyes. I knew that they were my parents. Sarah the woman says. I say yes. She runs up to me and gives me a hug then apologizes and says that she feels like she already knows me.
“Sarah you are so beautiful. I’m sorry, its just I'm captivated by you. Are your foster parents here?” She asks looking at the door.
I wasn’t sure that I should tell them or lie. If I tell them they could make me go back.
“Um. No, they are not. I moved out of there house at the age of 16. They really didn’t have much care to where I was. Please don’t call anyone. I am making it fine without them. I am almost 18.” As I said this they looked stunned, as if they felt terrible. I kept begging them not to say anything to anyone. They told me that they would not tell.
Scott said, “I am so sorry we had no idea but I have a question. Who is going to help you with the baby. I’m sure you have a boyfriend or someone.”
“No one, I'm alone. The man who got me pregnant left 3 weeks after I found out I was pregnant. I never heard from him again.” I told them not looking at there faces, terrified what there expression would be. Mary looked at me, stunned.
“You’ve gone through everything alone? I’m so very sorry. Is there anyway that Scott and I can contribute? We would love to be around for the birth of your baby.” She said with hope in her eyes. I told her that would be nice.
The next day Mary and I went shopping for baby things. I was worried because I only get paid $200 a week and my apartment rent is $400. So I don’t have much money. After a few weeks Mary asked me to call her Mom. She was the closest thing I had to a mom and I do forgive her for giving me up. So the next day when we ate lunch at a restaurant I said Mom, can you pass the salt. She jumped up and hugged me. Then I told Scott: Dad can you get the waiter and he had a smile ear to ear. From then on I called them Mom and Dad.
Its time for the baby and Mom is by my side. When the baby comes out it weighs 8 pounds and 3 ounces. I decided on the name Olivia Lynn Joy. All I could think was that she is so beautiful.
